Skipping historical aspects and hubbub... I'll throw in my 2 doubloons on this... that flat out, Gentlemen are sexier than ever! Fop? Naw... just a man with incredible manners and civility.

Besides, looks like that... to a pirate, especially a Lady scoundrel (pirate or otherwise)... th' man has WEALTH!

AYE that is true, and I suppose once one gets past all the furbelows and geegaws that you can truly see the man within instead of the pretty package he presents.

Amanjiria,

Upon inspection, I must say that all are equal to the position of gentlemen. Though, the last one with the red heels may be in question - yet, fashion is just one point of being a Fop. Appearance was important yet, social habits, and behaviors among the elite/high social class also had great emphasis on what a Fop truly was. Dressing flash is one thing, but whom you interact with and where you went for entertainment is definitely another.

So what about these gentlemen? They look rather in fashion to me, do they fall in the requirements of the Fop?

No actually they are just proper gentlemen from the time period... I believe one is supposed to the Duc du Maine circa 1708. Nothing about him being a fop.

Yah... that's just how gentlemen dressed.... fops were even more extreame.......

A fun side note:.... look at the differences in details in the second picture Capt. Sterling posted and the first picture..... when you start looking in "costume" books.... the differences start to get even worse....... a drawing of a drawing of a painting..... kinda like the game telephone........

Patrick is absolutely correct... again, like any type of evidence, first hand is always the best, everything coming after also becomes interpretation... yes we do need to do that sometimes, but if you can find originals... so much the better....

I also agree with Patrick on the fact that hey that is the way gentlemen dressed... different mindset back then... tough guys did wear velvet, lace and embroidery...
