  10. Pirate Documentaries

I just finished watching a documentary on History 2 channel called Pirate Island. It was about Madagascar shipwrecks. Good viewing...made me wonder what other pirate documentaries people have seen. I saw the Whydah exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota when it was in town, and the same guy who discovered that shipwreck is the person this Pirate Island documentary follows.
  11. The crew of "The Devil's Whore"

"It was a Man-O’-War with 102 broadside cannons, light steel armor plating, eight bow cannons as well as eight stern ones, a set of swivel guns, a set of prototype black-powder mortars, and a three-headed naval ram. Its body was painted crimson and its sails were black. The figurehead was a nude maiden’s upper half with intestines drooling out her bottom, and the Ship was called “The Devil’s Whore”. The ship wasn’t like any normal Man O’ War, because the ship’s hull was slightly slimmer and sleeker than other Man O’ Wars, making it faster almost like it had the hull of a Frigate." -One of Sister Hawk's introductory paragraphs, describing the vessel As ye can read from the words above this flag, this ship be DEADLY. Twas' sailed by Captain Johnathan Arnason, and was feared by all sailors from the Horne O' Africa to the East Coast O' Canada. It could ram into the Broadside of a Schooner and split the bloody thing in half like it was nothin'! Even Blackbeard himself wouldn't want to mess with this vessel, but she needs a decent crew. One that can load all 51 Cannons on her Port or Starboard Broadside in under a minute, reef the Sail-lines to get the massive beast up to top speed, and one with good enough eyes to see through the thickest fog. So join up, and lads, we'll have a great adventure. -Best Regards: Captain Johnathan Arnason, the most "generous" and "praised" Pirate on the seas (ENGLISH: This is the official discussion board for my chapter book, Sister Hawk. If I have any questions about Pirate Culture and Facts I can't find the answers on Google for, you as the community will hopefully give me a better, more concrete answer. If you also have questions about the book, I'll be happy to answer them, but I won't give anything away. This thread will be open 24-7 so get the conversation started! Anyone who contributes to my book will be listed in the books Author Notes! -Sincerely: Reeve Johnson, young author)
  12. The Hunt

    From the album Pirate Art

I had a request from my biggest fan at the time to do a chase scene of a pirate pursuing a merchantman, this is what I came up with.

Shot of my boots. The weathering looks a lot more harsh in this image than it does in person.

  15. Captain at night

    From the album Tuerie's Wardrobe

Here's a picture of my full garrrb. The coat I got for a steal on ebay - it dates back to the late 1800's and was used at several opera houses. It has a lot of natural wear and tear, plus plenty of sun damage - perfect for a pirate.

Closeup of my makeup. Trying to get that sun-baked and wind burnt look. I used a skin illustrator palate to accomplish this look.

I love how this turned out. I see far too many tricorns and wanted to be a little different. Inspired by Captain Teague's hat.

  21. John Derdrake

Is anyone familiar with a pirate named 'John Derdrake' ? I have only found reference to him three times. twice on a pirate website, and once in a picture of old pirate trading cards. Supposedly he was a pirate and shipwright who plundered in the baltic between Sweden, Denmark, and England and commanded a 70 gun ship called the 'Sudden Death' he settled in Stralsund but was captured when he ventured into another port and was hanged. This info came from the website I mentioned. I'm curious because my persona commands an 80 some gun ship and I'm curious because I believed this was impossible till now. Of course there is the obvious chance he was invented to feed a public obsessed with pirate lore, but I could be wrong and he was more of a local legend. The article certainly made him seem like a small time pirate.

  23. A pirate captain/officer circa 1700-1730

From the album Realistic pirate art

A pirate captain or other officer. I decided to place his appearance between common sailor and gentleman. He has a tricorn hat but rest of this gear casual sailor clothing. He has a weapon belt with ammo bag.
