From the album: Realistic pirate art
This sailor or pirate carries a rum/beer/wine/ gunpowder barrel. He is wearing petticoat breeches and his checkered underpants can been seen under it. He has a pair of red stockings and a striped wool cap. He wears a commonplace linen shirt and shoes. He is not really special in any way so a rather common sailor of the era (circa 1690-1725). As far as I know people had striped wool caps back then… at least some sort of striped caps are mentioned in sailor’s inventories etc. -

I picked up a neat little barrel at a flea market last week but it is in need of two hoops being replaced. Any experience out there on hoop replacements??? Thanks Jas. Hook

so i have ended up with a small barrel/rumlett/what ever you want to call it. It is made of oak and certainly designed to hold liquids. so here is my dilema. I really want to give it a good internal cleaning, reseal it, then use it for water. We have beat the sealing it horse to death, so i'll save us that agony. What concerns me is cleaning it out. It looks like wine was in it at one time as there are red stains around the plug. What is the best way to clean this critter out to make it food grade safe and are there any hidden dangers that anyone can think of? I'm thinking dtergent, bleach, rinse.

I have these little kegs I've collected from the flea-markets, and have thought about converting them into small kegs for musket powder. have the willow growing in my pond to replace the bands with. What do the folks here think of this idea? Should I do all three or just the little one and leave the wine-casks as they are? They are very well made, tight. Maybe I'll replace the bands and leave them for rum and spirits? Suggestions? I cannot decide. Bo

I have lost my link to a site with drawings that showed how to make willow barrel hoops and the cuts necessary to join the ends of the hoops. Does anyone have access to such they would be willing to share? I found a small oak keg with thin copper bands that I want to turn into a powder keg prop for my hide-hunter camp. Thanx. Bo
