  1. There is is at least *one* other Aussie on the list! I'm in Brisbane, and run the only pirate re-enactment group here in the Land Down Under (that I know of, anyway...) Cheers to you all! Omega
  2. The Croc in the new move is very nicely done... suitably menacing.. I thought they combined the darker overtones of the story very well with the whimiscal/comical side of things.. But I won't go into too much detail until more of you have seen it, would hate to spoil it for anyone! Omega
  3. Theatre Vs Re-enactment.. must there be a choice???? I'm a thread-counting, hand-sewing, book-reading, research-crazy authenticity nazi - and proud of it. I'm also a sawdust-in-the-veins dyed-in-the-wool theatre brat. Love performing. Heck, that's why I got into re-enactment in the first place - to combine my love of history with my love of performing. If that's not everyone's cup of tea, then that's fine by me - it's a big ocean out there. But in our group we try to be as accurate as possible AND as entertaining as possible.. and I think doing both is very possible - indeed we've proved it on many occassions! We entertain kiddies, and adults, and we're obviously recoginisable as pirates to anyone who sees us - all of this while maintaining a high level of accuracy. I don't really see where the conflict is, to be honest, or why one thing would need to be sacrificed for the other. The beautiful thing about re-enacting the Golden Age of Piracy is that, for the most part, what the general public think you ought to look like and what you actually are meant to look like are very, very close.. so where's the problem? I have to admit I'm a little bewildered at the whole idea that you either have to be fun OR accurate... would that guy over there singing the pirate song be less fun if his shirt was linen? Or his hat wool, not acetate felt? Would he be less entertaining with leather soles on his shoes?? Would he be less fun if he were singing a funny song from the period?? No, no, and no.... that's my take on it, anyway....
  4. Exactly.. to be cursed, you have to take it from the chest.. otherwise the coins would have cursed an awful lot of people while they were in circulation.. It's good to see some other people putting this plot through the ringer.. I thought I was the only one :-)
  5. Hello me piratical brethren.. What did we think of Pan? I quite liked it, certianly a marked improvement on other attempts at the story.. I thought the casting was excellent, and thought it represented the book well (although I suspect if you weren't a reader/lover of the book the movie might be a mixed bag for you).. they tried to weave the various themes of the book and I thought succeeded in the most part. The pirates were comical, the gear wasn't too scary.. all in all not a bad effort. It gave us a bit of work for our re-enactment group, premiers and all.. which was good. What did the rest of you think?
  6. Ahhh, authenticity, a subject close to me black heart.... In our group, we use all natural fibres, our hems are hand sewn and we don't wear anything that isn't documentable. That said a HELL of a lot is documentable for this era!! I think it is one of the easiest periods to re-enact accurately. I don't think being accurate diminishes the entertainment or fun factor of a group - quite the opposite in fact. Yeah, I've been called an authenticity nazi - I choose to take it as a compliment! I think the key is to let people do what they want though - in our group, we've decided that accuracy is the way to go.. but if that's not what floats someone else's boat, so be it.. live and let live! It's a big ocean, isn't there room for everyone? Trying to enforce your standards on another group just makes you an asshole, IMNSHO.
  7. Interesting topic! We have plenty of women here in Brisbane who want to re-enact pirates.. and all of us are waving documentation in the air to justify what we want to do. It seems as though Anne & Mary are our stand-outs, but it seems as though there were a fair few others as well! I think they were a pretty tough bunch though, no shrinking violet types! :-)
