  1. Check out the original link at Cool Boats There's a couple of barquentines and a hermaphrodite brig (labled as a brigantine). Still, there's nothing wrong with a gaff rigger in my opinion. And anything wood is a plus as well. Coastie Well Lad you may also try a site called Appollo duck they are another big brokerage and they has some interesting and unusual vessels .

  8. Well there hitman there was never any hard feelins an as I lay to it any disscusin around here is always a lively affair. I know what ye mean by lovin the big ships though as they were the best o there time fer what they did . As fer me avatar it is based on my family background and a fondness fer Celtic history and mythology and also an interest in sight hounds . The irish wolfhound and the scottish dearhoud being me favorites . As fer the java as long as ye throws a little rum in it I guess it'll taste alright.
  9. Well master hitman I think that you should have been a little more timeline specific when comparing sailing vessels . I thought that you were refering to vessels used in piracy or suitable for that use. I believe the greek vessel you were refering to was the Trireme and they were in use about c.480 B.C. in the Med and yes they were very fast . As for the clipper ships that is true clipper ships they hadn't really evolved untill after 1849 the first true clipper was the Rainbow designed by john Griffiths and built by Smith and Dimon of new York . Unless you were refering to the Baltimore clippers but they hadn't been developed before 1812 . But the baltimore clipper wasn't really considered a true clipper , both forms of the clipper having been developed after the golden age of piracy I am not sure that this would be considered a valid comparison . And as mister Hawkyns said to big a crew makes for to small a share. Not that Pyrates aren't a generous sort ..
  10. I have to agree with mister Hawkins small and fast not to much freeboard , a harder target to hit and she would easily out sait and outrun any of the bigger ships mentioned .
  11. Been a fur trade reenactor for some time have always had a love of weapons old and new quite partial to blackpowder I am . I have an obsession with tallships , naval warfare and a fasination with the histories and legends o pyracie an I lay to it it may be the Rum what done it to me ... It all just sort of fits together real nice like don't it .
  12. The prossess was called browning the steel originally in the white was treated with a mild acidic solution untill a fine layer of rust formed then that rust was rubbed with a fine abraisive and the prossess was repeated untill the metal reached the desired colour . The gun barrel was the oiled or waxxed so that the layer of rust and oil protected the metal from the elements. hence the name " Brown Bess ".

  20. Well by battles at sea do they mean just cannons or does that mean you can still use grapplin hooks an and boardin pikes ? Actually up here the ony sea battle that we've seen were during the tallships visit two years ago. pretty sad record eh wot ?
  21. At an Irishman's wake the widow and her young son are standing by the casket when a man comes up and says " it's a terrible thing that yer husband passed away as he was so young , and leavin a fine wife and son , if you don't mind me askin what did he die of ?" At this the widow says " It was goneriah ." The young son thought that he had missunderstood his mother and just let it pass. This happened a few more times all with the same answer , well the son leaned over and in an angry whisper said " Mother thats a terrible thing that yer sayin about father you know it was diarrea he died of not goneriah . " At this the mother says " I know son but I'd rather have people think yer father died a sport rather than the shit that he was ."
