  1. I was always of the opinion that the Clamshell hilt/Dutch Cutlass offered by Windlass Steelcrafts was most likely inspired by the 17th century clamshell hilts viewed in the illustrations seen in Esquemling's book on the Buccaneers. It seems that there actually WAS a historical antecedent. It can be viewed in Gilkerson's "Boarder's Away-With Steel",on pgs.74-75.It appears to be a model that was issued to the fleet via the offices of the Dutch East India Company as late as 1795.
  2. Blair informed me that they will be keeping the Dutch Cutlass listed currently on their site, and adding the Clamshell Hilt in addition. Further,he also informed me that there will be several other types of cutlasses added to their current catalog, without eliminating any of the ones currently in stock. he went on to say that the price for the Clamshell Hilt will be $120.00 or less.(American Dollars.) Now,for the love of Heaven, can anybody out there inform me as to wether the Boss in Nova Scotia is the Bosa Nova?
  3. I've had a personal communication from Blair,at Loyalist Arms and Repair this past week. The Dutch Cutlass they've been offering for a number of years is NOT the clamshell hilt cutlass that they're goingt o be offering later this Spring! He sent me a copy of the shell hilt and if it isn't the same as the one offered by Windlass,it's almost the same.I certainly couldn't tell any differences. Gene George, who reviewed the "Dutch"Cutlass at MyArmoury.com states that while he has never purchased anything from them,he found them to be prompt and professional in his dealings with them.Further, author John Maddox Roberts HAS purchased from them, and found them to deal with quality merchandise. Now,can anybody tell me if the Boss in Nova Scotia is the Bosa Nova?
  4. This particular piece of merchandise is also being offered by Loyalist Arms and Repairs, out of harrietsfield,Nova Scotia. Their price is $120 or less(American). Seems like the place to go,no? By the way,I happened to have a question. Is the Boss in Nova Scotia the Bosa Nova?
  5. This particular item in back on the market, although not yet through Museum Replcas Ltd. It's being offered through By the Sword,Inc.The going price is $235.00,unsharpened,and not including carrying charges. I've gotten enrolled with MyArmoury.com.and some of the folks there think quite highly of the current status of these items. 1.)1085 carbon steel. 2.)Heat tempered and tested 3.)Full tang. That's what they're stating in writing, and I guess your could contact the BBB locally if you're not satisfied. By the Sword,Inc. is located at: P.O.Box 07282 Ft. Meyers,Fl.,(I forgot the Zip Code). 1-877-433-9719
  6. This past Wednesday(11/15/06)I was talking with one of the sales reps at MRL regarding the Dutch Cutlass which is being re-issued in the Spring,2007,catalog. She informed me that their products were; 1.)Made of steel with a high carbon content. 2.)Heat tested and tempered. 3.)Had a full tang. Now,there's an old adage to the effect that a fool and his money are soon parted. And,let's face it,she's out to make a sale. Can anybody out there give me the way to find out if I'm being told the truth. You aid in this matter will be appreciated genuinely
  7. By the way,the MRL Dutch Cutlass is going to be re-issued in the Spring,2007 catalog. The sales representative informed me this past Wednesday(11/15/06) that it was : 1.)Made of High Carbon Steel 2.)Heat tempered and tested 3.)Has a full tang. I'm going to do a lot more investigating, but so far,it sounds pretty good
  8. I spoke to Chris at Reliks.com this afternoon, and he informed me that their Brass-Hilted pirate cutlass has a high carbon content ,is battle ready, and can be sharpened at my convenience and/or request. Now,Reliks.com is the Ontario,Canada distirbuter for Windlass Steelcrafts. He stated that thier merchandise has improved in quality over the last 15 years. can any of you folk out there provide me with some advice?
  9. Thanks, gentlemen, for the feedback that you've provided so far. Right now, based on what Gentleman of Fortune has mentioned,I'm looking for something that he would have described as "theatrical," at the very least.By that,I mean something that would stand up to "blade on blade "contact. Further,I'd really like to get something that would be good for long term wear. I wrote to the guy at Old Dominion Forge, and was informed that there would be a waiting list of at least 2 years. I'm investigaating the chaps at Reliks.com,with their brass pirate cutlass. They state that it's "battle ready"and the steel has a high carbon content. I'd appreciate further feedback in this area.
  10. I'm looking to acquire one.One that is functional, workable, durable.I've heard good things about the Dutch cutlass from MRL,which is coming back onto the market next Spring. Can anybody tell me if it's more that just a wall decoration? What about the other cutlasses from MRL/Atlanta Cutlery?I'm afraid of getting something that will shatter in use? I talked to a knifemaker in Elyria,Ohio, who would make me a copy of the Dutch cutlass, and wanted $3,000. What about the Cold Steel 1917 Cutlass? Is it useable and viable?I was thinking of customizing one.
