  1. Watched a really wonderful period film entitled "Belle" last night. While outside of the GAOP it really deserves a viewing. the story is about a mixed race girl born to an officer in the British Navy who he takes back to England to be raised as his heir by his uncle. In is set at the time of the Zong Massacre. Might be a little tough to find on DVD but very enjoyable.

  2. I picked up Black Sails, season 1 on DVD. I was able to watch the first episode early but other than trailers had not watched any of the show. Despite many historical, equipment, and costume concerns expressed by the community I found the show very captivating! Very exciting, well, acted and very, very well written. Many episodes depicted a tension you could feel as you watched the show. Deep plots and with lots of exciting characters. The battles at sea were intense!

If you have a passing fancy for action and adventure with a piratical theme give the show a try! I have been told that we will be able to enjoy at least 3 seasons of Black Sails.

Anyone else watch the series have a few comments? We could mark some as having spoilers if you'd like to discuss individual episodes.

  3. You are invited to a Halloween costume party and dress in your pirate kit. Is that "cheating"?

I know another pirate, who puts on his kit and goes out to win multiple Halloween costume contests. His kit is about 80% hand made so he really does deserve some accolades. I have heard some call this cheating however and I'm interested in your opinion.

  4. Question for all: I’m looking for a few good books that show the fashion of the GAOP preferably with illustrations. Ultimately I would like examples of clothing worn not only in England and on the continent but also in the colonies, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. I know it’s a tall order…

    Suggestions?

  5. I was curious because I'm reading a novel (fiction of course) and its set during Queen Annes War. Mentions several men carrying rapiers.

I believe I read someplace that early small swords did have a slight edge on the tip but as Daniel mentioned evolved into a triangular shape which prevented a cutting edge making the weapon only useful for piercing attacks (very fatal).
