I am a little concerned with the promo pictures showing John Malkovich with a white beard but taking on the role of Blackbeard... seems wrong but it could be a fun series.

Just watched a documentary on Netflix entitled "Ben Franklin's Pirate Fleet". Later than our time frame but worth a watch.

I must confess that while others might seek out the pub for education and research, for myself it's fuel for the imagination. I look forward to checking out the various threads. I love looking at new pictures in the gallery. It's also a great way to take a mental vacation while checking out the exciting pirate themed activities that fellow pub members are posting.

Watched a movie on Netflix entitled "Vatel". Set during the reign of King Louis XIV. Costuming is excellent!

Can we push this topic a little further? What about addressing these events from both the perspective as a participant/ volunteer (kit requirements, contact suggestions, what you will be required to do) and as an attendee (t-shirt, sun glasses, maybe a costume)??? Example: I attended Pirates in Paradise for my first and only time in 2005. I was curious and wanted to participate but uncertain who to approach and how to introduce myself. What was required? What is my commitment to the event( I've read Mission's posts about watching a gate late into the night at Fort Taylor)? Is there a cost for meals after hours or in the camp ground (or by invitation only)? So I simply attended the event and had a wonderful time. Some folks might want to scout out an event first before jumping in. Others are a little braver and go in head first! Some have restrictions especially if coming in for a pirate event from out of time. Some have family that may or may not want to participate but will attend. I would find these details helpful.

What might be helpful on this topic is to post a list of a few pirate events that are really, really good. The one Jen mentioned sounds excellent, so much that it might be worth a visit! If someone who wants to start up a pirate event had a list of good ones he or she could experience what we like. Just an idea.

Drama Free events??? Aren't all pirate events free of drama (unless you mean stage drama)?

Let me second the idea of keeping the event "open" to new people and at least attempting to get them involved. Nothing can be more disheartening than traveling to an event, spending money, extending a friendly hand and not being accepted by the old guard. Now I'm not talking about handing over a black powder weapon to someone you and letting them fire it. You certainly need to act with caution. But what about including new people in some of the after hour events or inviting them to join you for a meal? It that seems to "private" at least pointing them here to the Pub so they can meet a few members??? Most people who come to a new event the first time don't know the details and might want to get more involved but won't unless invited. They consider it private and much like High School a clique. What's the harm it walking up to the guy in the plastic bucket book covers and leather Jack Sparrow hat and saying, "Hey shipmate you look new around this port... ever seen the 'walk the plank' challenge? It's over at pier one at 4:30! Oh, you see that fine looking tall ship? That be the "Black Angel" and she gives rides to anyone who can shell out 40 dollars. Hey you on the mailing list? Do you like rum? We do a tasting down a Dirty Jim's Grill and Pub tonight after 10."

I have been impressed with the set design. The sail cloth tents and old Spanish building. It would be fun to do a pirate photo shoot on one of those sets!

I liked it! I don't fuss about the inaccuracies but just have fun with it.

That's a very real possibility I hadn't thought of, and you've raised my expectations for more traffic on the Pub. My thoughts as well. The general public may start looking at piracy a little more closely and decide they want more. A few may turn up here and learn a few lessons in history.

Jake the pirate tale you want is also coming to TV. "Crossbones" is a network TV series that also takes place on Nassau and and features the "pirate culture" that existed in the Golden Age. No word on when we will see it. I wonder if Black Sails generates an audience that maybe we'll see it sooner. The hosts of the preview I attended stated that they hope people will subscribe to Starz just for Black Sails. Maybe we shall see a second Pirate Renaissance?
