I like to muddy the waters with a Hollywood/Pop culture/rockstar blending of styles, but I am looking to put together something more historically correct. Very open to any advise and suggestions. Pirates have been my current obsession for a while now, it's my goal to discover all I can about them.
  1. Paper? That must be quite the sight. Ah hah! I think you are likely correct, Swashbuckler. I was just now able to find one on eBay that asserts about the same time frame. Thanks for your input.
  2. Lacquered, as in wooden I assume?
  3. Forgive me if the image doesn't show. Not only am I new here, but new to forums in general. I wondered if anyone here might be able to tell me about how old this spyglass might be or any other general information about it. I know it's a snowball's chance in hell it might date to anywhere near GAoP but I none the less hope someone might know something about it, or know someone who would. I'm pretty sure the thing's brass. Smells a bit like pennies to me now and again. Fully extended is about 107cm or 42in, what have you, and shortened up about 32cm, or 12.5in. There's not a maker's mark of any sort on it, inside or out, that I can find with me own two eyes. Nor any marks from anyone who's owned it. Once again, thank you all. Also any guide on how posting pictures works here would be lovely.
  4. Wow, thank you guys for this wealth of information! Looks like I have got some reading to do. haha Ahh...Sometimes I wish there weren't such a dichotomy between the Hollywood and the history... Oh well. Thanks again!
  5. I wasn't able to find anything on this by searching through old posts, but I am curious. Under the wigs, which I understand were common around the time, what would a mariner/pirate's hair style have been like? I picture a rather unkempt group of individuals, but I can also see how longer hair would have been impractical on board a ship. I tend to doubt that many pirates went about with a set of dreads like some depictions which have become popular. Ha! Another less pressing question I ponder. What is a good web site for authentic depictions of sailors and pirates? I'm having a hard time trying to pin one down. Thanks to you all!
  6. Ahhh Thank you all for your warm welcomes! And your insights! And Mission, I suppose in that sense you are correct. I guess what I really meant was that nothing of mine is nearly period accurate enough for me to feel like I bear the title of reenactor. Either way, tis all very much fun!
  7. Greetings to all! Allow me to introduce myself as the landlocked scholar, Pyrate Joe. For the past several years I have found myself becoming more and more taken with the subculture I've found surrounding pirates. It's such a great shinny beacon of freedom and romanticism that I cannot help but be ever moved by it! Just this last year I even had the great pleasure of attending the Portland Pirate Festival in St. Helens, Oregon. My first ever festival. I did have a question I wished to pose to all whom may have an answer. While attending the Portland Pirate fest I did happen upon a fine piece of steel which was priced modestly enough for my meager salary. Now I am no reenactor, I simply like the garb and fun that comes along with the life. I am however, curious about the laws that are here in Oregon that pertain to me being able to carry my sword in public. I don't want to face the hangman's noose simply for walking around. If anyone has any resources on the matter I would be forever in your debt. A good day to you all! Cheers!
