  1. I can actually buy the explanation of sailors believing that it improved eyesight. One of the things that I have studied extensively as an herbalist and in particular my specialty, Ayurveda. which comes from India. I have been studying ts connection to the Middle East and points onward is that the piercing of ears, noses, etc. all have a tie-in to bodily health. In acupuncture, and its predecessor, Ayurvedic medicine, depending upon which point is pierced, helps stimulate a bodily response that does enhance health. Also, unrelated but yet related sort of, women in India (and elsewhere) pierce their left nostril - it is tied into creativity / creation and fertility, as well as enhancing her femininity. ;-) Acupuncture works, so hey, if it worked, I am sure a pirate might be an easy adapter of similar customs during the era.
  2. I am up near Chicago (in Joliet) every month anyway, so t'would be no hardship to join the rest of ye fellow pirates there. Sounds like a bit of fun to be sure!
  3. Aye, I got that book at Sam's Club last month and am reading it now. It may be a kid's book, but I am really enjoying it. My son is 16 and is wanting to read it too, but I think he is going to have to sign a paper saying he will replace it if anything happens to it!
  4. Well this is a corner of the Pub that I have not gotten a chance to explore yet. I am also a single Lady Pirate. Pleased to meet you all. :)
  5. I want BOTH Jack Sparrow figures and Barboss for sure! AGGH!! It cannot come fast enough!
  6. This lass has just fainted, for I did not know there was a 2 DVD set, let alone one that was going to have three! Oh wait...DUH! I have the 2 DVD one! I forgot! *embarassed look* Eep. I am going to pass the word! :)
  7. I will stick with helping prepare the vegetables and the bounty of the sea, I cannot be eating the porker alas.
  8. I love Disneyland, and my absolute favorite ride was ALWAYS Pirates of the Caribbean. If they have a Jack Sparrow, then its going to definitley bring alot of added attraction to that ride! Thanks for telling us, Bess!

    props?

I would LOVE to get some costume pieces from that film! I bid on some last year and was outbid at the last moment. I had heard that they were really well done, and so the money they were going for, even for the costumes for the extras, they were worth the money spend, and it really was not all that much. *sigh* That is still my second favorite pirate flick, in spite of its really cheesy script!
  10. I say make that merchant eat it, Iron Bess! Those of us who are long time members of eBay and a part of that community get pissed off when people see it as a way to be fleecing an unsuspecting public with deceit an lies. I buy and sell on eBay, mostly herbs, books and new age things. I also buy all my saris, clothes and tribal jewelry from India, Morocco etc. that I wear on there. If you are careful you can get some really great deals. I did have a friend that got the Navy Jack flag that was supposedly from the Dauntless from this seller, its silk, and like seven feet by four feet and that much silk fabric alone is worth the $50 she paid. *sigh* Still....its too bad if she was taken in.
  11. A right fine coat it is, Skot! I do verrah much like the detailing that ye did on it. Ye are right handy with needle and thread!
  12. Akasha: It seems to me that Amazon Dry Goods out of Davenport, IA did carry some of the patterns from the time period. The Pattern Catalog is worth the money spent, IMHO. I have gotten things from them and they are top notch. http://www.amazondrygoods.com/
  13. My sister is a professional costumer (Shakespeare on Navy Pier in Chicago) and this frock coat that ye have made is as fine as any work I have seen coming out of that costume shop! Well done! :)
