  1. I appreciate your historical knowledge of the Civil War and Fort Pillow but I don't appreciate being heckled for being a civil war reenactor. I've studied it and written about it and I am proud to be a confederate reenactor. I am also familiar with the massacre at FP and it was a horrible event. I will be in portsmouth reenacting secession and in Richmond on April 17 reenacting the vote as George Wythe Randolph. I don't heckle you, please treat me with the same respect. Thanks.
  2. Welcome.

Care to provide an more info on our local and interests?

  3. I see a trend here y'all, haha. I will make sure not to say "unit" but rather algonquinistic rabble of men and women with negotiable moral terpitude. Anyway, thanks for the advice and info, you have all been very helpful and I look forward to getting into the hobby (which word is used for that?). Thanks for anything you guys and gals can offer to loan or sell or rent, etc. If any of you live in Richmond shoot me your number and maybe we can get together and you can show me what you've got so I know what to get. I'll bring the beer! Did I mention I'm already a legal pirate? It's called working for the Virginia Department of Taxation... Regards, Matthew
  4. Hey Jas, I appreciate the insight, I'll take a look at my gear and see what can be used for pirating about the bay. At this point I have a fire starter kit, a leather covered bottle, long socks, a knife and hatchet that are 18th century repros but a few things from my civil war gear can pass for either one. MK
  5. Hey Bo, Sizes 44 jacket, 36 trousers, 6'2" in height so I've got long arms and legs...Perfect for hacking away with a cutlass. Does anyone fence here by the way? I do that as a sport but I see many people do it at reenactments as part of the display.
  6. I talked with the york privateers and the archangel; I believe there were too. Both had authentic wares and were pretty cool and informative!
  7. Hey, thanks for your note. I wear size 34 or 36 but can probly rock a 38 if I have to. That's awesome that your dad was a reenactor too. I appreciate the offer, where are you located at? I am doing an event in Portsmouth on April 2 for the civil war if Hampton Roads is your area. I live in Richmond though. Regards Matthew
  8. Hey All, I am doing research on colonial taverns. Does anyone have any good historical accounts of pirate activities involving taverns? Specifically, I am interested in taverns that were known to be partial to pirates. It can be anywhere from the Chesapeake to the Caribbean and involve their favorite haunts and tavern culture as well as the occasional drunken row. I have heard of a place in Savannah that was renowned for being such a place but that may be more folklore than truth. Anyway, I appreciate your help, thanks! Regards, Matthew Krogh aka Bambi
  9. Hi Bo, My name is Matthew and I am just getting into this type of reenacting. Would you be interested in selling any of your garb and accessories? If so, let me know, you can email me at mkrogh@vt.edu Thanks! MK
  10. Hey guys, Yeah, I'm just tired of the same old with Civil War reenacting. Pirating sounds fun, lots of drinking and whoring I suppose. Basically, my research in the Civil War has been completed to fruition and I've been researching other time periods and historic trends which led me to this. I was raised on the Chesapeake so it only seems natural. Plus, I went to an MTA recently and the pirates and their ilk seemed pretty cool. I appreciate y'alls help and I'll look into some of those suggestions. In the meantime if you have any "old" repros you are interested in selling that would be good for me please let me know. What units are y'all with? Thanks, take care! MK
  11. Hi my name is Matthew Krogh and I am looking to get into the hobby. I have a unit in mind but was hoping to get some input for sutlers and any ways to cut corners on cost by doing stuff myself (to a small degree). Any help or advice for this hobby (as opposed to Civil War reenacting which I did for 10 years) is appreciated! Thanks! Regards, MK PS~My civil war confederate nickname was Bambi. I'm guessing that won't work in the pirate world, haha.
