    Women's Hunting Coat

A visual of making an 18th Century women's hunting coat.

This is the hem of the cuff. I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do. I might put two buttons on the outside, kind of like cuff-links, which would hold it together and i wouldn't have to do any hand-stitching, OR I could hand stitch the raw edge.

The cuffs are not yet done. This is the inside of the sleeve where the cuff and sleeve are attached. This will have to be hand-stitched.

Again, sorry about the lame photo. My camera was dying. I measured out 3 four inch lines along the top of the cuff. For the trim I am using you have to go over it twice with a straight stitch, once on both sides of the velvet, and then you also need to stitch along the end or the velvet will pull right out. Once I got the trim cut and sewn into place, I used these basic old brass looking buttons to add just a hint of detail. The buttons also hold the cuff in place. I plan on doing a similar sort of thing down the front of the coat.

I had some camera problems earlier today which is why you're seeing things already done. My sleeve cuffs, which you could see in #33, were sewn along the long edges and then folded back, upon itself as you can see here. The protruding end, seen in #33, was inserted into the sleeve, pinned down, and sewn with a straight stitch. Once the cuff was attached to the sleeve I made sure both sides had the same length cuff. I folded the extra inside and hemmed the edge. Using a brown 5/8" velvet and poly-blend trim, I trimmed around the outer edge of each cuff.

Sorry about the blurry photo. I sewed my sleeves together and then attached them to the body of the coat. I reinforced the seams and then got to work on the cuff.

  12. What?! Never heard of Adam Ant?! Adam was one of the major punk movement players - back when it was Adam and the Ants, then due to fights amongst band members it was switched to Adam Ant. Check these out. You might have heard or seen them, but just never realized who it was. Stand and Deliver
  13. I just got home from the gym. I just added an extra 10 minutes to my cardio and I had an easier time with my 150 sit-ups. :) Now I'm sucking down a protein drink and I'm getting ready to make some food.

I decided to change the shape of this when I had to adjust it to fit the new sleeve size. I have the large straight side on a fold - very important. See the smaller rectangular shape? That will be fit in the sleeve. I have to cut 4 of these.

I stapled together my front and back pattern of an arm. It fits, but I'll have to add room if I even have any plans on it being comfortable. I'll add on an inch around the whole thing.

  18. I came across the term 'Fop Rock' on wikipedia because I was looking at some info on Adam Ant. So let me give you guys a definition: "A more recent and minor trend is "fop-rock," in which the performers don 18th century wigs, lace cravats, and similar costumes to perform, a minor movement that would appear to owe something to glam rock, visual kei, and the New Romantic movement. Adam Ant of Adam and the Ants would seem to be a forerunner of the trend, who occasionally performed in elaborate highwayman outfits. Other notable examples would be Falco's performance as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the song "Rock Me Amadeus," a #1 hit in the US and the UK, and #2 in Canada in 1986, and Boston-based band The Upper Crust." Do any of you guys listen to Fop Rock? I'm a big Adam Ant fan myself and I have a few Falco songs. Oh here we go...a video
  19. Let's re-read the third bullet: "Salmagundi is also purportedly a meal served on pirate ships. It is a stew of anything the cook had on hand, usually consisting of chopped meat, anchovies, eggs, and onions, often arranged in rows on lettuce and served with vinegar and oil, and spiced with anything available. The following is taken from a reprint of "Mrs. Hill's New Cook Book", originally published in 1867 and republished by Applewood Books of Bedford, Massachusetts." I've found some other recipes on the internet as well. They're all different! http://www.bigoven.c...ndi-recipe.html http://www.celtnet.o...eliz-salmagundi http://www.ifood.tv/recipe/salmagundi http://www.recipe-co...undi/14771.html http://www.cookadvic...4633-recipe.htm http://www.allbritis.../salmagundi.php

Rough patterns for the sleeves. I laid the jacket down and made sure that the curves will line up just with the coat and with each other. I then traced a light outline of my arm so I could get an approximate length. I have not yet added area for seams or any extra length to the arms.
