Sailing on the Royaliste, black powder and rum!
  1. An excellent haul, indeed, considering you can probably sell 'em on eBay for $100 each! True pirate plunder. As a cautionary note, if you are fixing these up to be firing weapons, please examine the barrels carefully. There were a lot of cheap "Tower" pistols produced in Japan that had inferior barrels. Make sure the breech plug (the "closed" end of the barrel) is securely welded in place, and the barrel is of good thickness to hold a charge. The inlaid pistol sounds like a middle eastern non-firing replica. Many of these are made for the tourist trade and "antiqued" to make them look old. The "fit and finish" of these is typically poor, and the barrels will not stand firing. If so, this is best left as a showpiece, as the work needed to make this a real firearm will be extensive. These are just "common sense" warnings, as I haven't seen your guns and thus have no idea of their condition!
  2. Ah, black powder. Is there anything it can't do?
  3. Strangely enough, when I'm piratin' I'm on me best behavior! At a pirate event on land I'm like a "pirate ambassador" in the public eye, and when sailing I need to have a clear head and fast reflexes fer the needs of the ship, and the discipline t' follow orders. So my pirate standards are these: 1. Drink as much as ye can without becomin' intoxicated. 2. Wear fine pirate garb proudly and with confidence. No apologies fer not bein' "period". 3. Treat yer mates w' respect at all times. Never bad mouth any o' them in public. Stand together if an outsider picks a fight. 4. Be on best behavior, so's the constables got no reason to shut us down. 5. See behavior. 6. No foul language, as we want to keep the kid-friendly pirate image. 7. Shoot as much black powder as ye can get away with; everyone loves fireworks!
  4. After consulting Blackheart, we've decided to hold off a week so we can join our crewmates at the fair. The more, the merrier! Ace and DP, you thinking Saturday or Sunday?
  5. Rumor has it that me an' Blackheart (and maybe a few more pirates) will be dressing up in stripey shirts and watch caps as victorian sailors at the Dicken's fair on Sunday (12/12). Mostly to answer the age old question, "What do you do with a drunken sailor...."
  6. Sorry to hear it! We may have played up the rivalry at times (all in fun), but the Chieftain was still a fine sight running squares against all the bermuda rigs on the bay. It'll be lonely here without her.
  7. I just bought a pair of colonial shoes from Fugawee: Men's Colonial Shoes I got the "Concord" style. I chose the "smooth out" option for an upperclass look, and right/left rather than straight lasts because I'm a comfort-loving hedonist. They arrived yesterday and they look to be excellent quality for the price. Haven't yet broken them in, so I'll repost in a few weeks and let you know how they're coming along.
  8. I agree, a weapon intended for stage combat should be blunted. As far as wear goes, I don't think it matters much. The sharp edge will cut deeper into the blunt, but will also wear quicker because of the thinness of the edge. Expect both swords to get badly dinged. Ideally in combat you're supposed to turn the blade to take a parry on the side, but I've never met anyone who could do this consistently.
  9. I think the problem will solve itself. Jumping into a forum and posting one-liners on every thread may give some geek a quick thrill, but these types tend to have short attention spans. The only people who stick around are those who are getting something meaningful from the discussions. Ignore the "trolls" and they'll go away.
  10. All I've got is workin' arms, but they don't seem t' mind what ye carry here in Northern California as long as ye keep it on yer belt. Brandishing a weapon of any kind is going t' get ye kicked out, whether real or replica.
  11. Aye, happy b'day crewmate Stitch! Ye make the mizzen crew look lazy with yer constant efforts on the foredeck!
  12. That wig construction looks pretty complicated! Maybe I can get Jenn to do it. I'll just take a few scalps on our next raid to get the raw materials....
  13. So, I've been thinking. As a pyrate in this modern mechanized world, what sort of professions are available that fit the pyratical temperament? The old lawbreaking methods are too easy to get caught at in this age of digital security. So far the best I've thought of is a stock market trader. Unlike normal investors who fund the growth of corporations via long-term investments, day-traders make money off the ebb and flow of money into and out of the stock market. The successful ones "steal" money from the big corporations, and perform no useful service other than "balancing the market". Who else skims profit off of the rich without giving anything in return?
  14. Some of us don't have a choice. I shave my head in preference to the pattern-baldness look. Too much testosterone, I guess. Seems like every pirate movie's got a bald guy, so I fit right in. I'm considering getting a powdered wig for formal events, to fit in with the "golden age" era. Anybody got a source for nice looking period wigs? Most of the wigs I've seen are Halloween costume trash. Problem with being a white bald guy is that the sunburn factor is a bitch. I always wear a head scarf or hat while out pirating.
  15. About how much powder do you go through in one of these events?
