  1. maybe you could fashion some of the letters for the Pub logo out of that whale bone porn scrimshaw...just sayin'...
  2. and yet one more- the first of the books...or in this case, an e-book. http://www.sail-world.com/Canada/Book-feature:-The-Sinking-of-the-Bounty/107961
  3. Another in depth article about Bounty, this time from CNN. http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/03/us/bounty/?hpt=hp_c1
  4. Here is a link to an article on the exhibit, and a gallery to witness the spurious examples of whalebone porn... Most of this exhibit is post GAoP , documenting the whaling trade, and of course tattooing. http://www.vancouversun.com/entertainment/Photos+salty+side+sailor/8128312/story.html please make sure your toddlers are tied up and blindfolded in another room before accessing this article.
  5. But the sailors getting tattooes didn't care about people like her's attitude, and likely reveled in the "rough" reputation it gave them. Certainly the scrimshaw would have been personal possessions not for public consumption..for the sailor and the entertainment of his mates. It's like our fathers hiding their Playboy magazines. Sure the preacher and your mother may have told them they are going to hell, but doesn't mean they don't mind looking at the forbidden fruit, aye?
  6. Apparently they have many and MUCH more explicit pieces..and those are the ones kept covered up in the storage room in the basement. Which is too bad- because we don't get to see some real history from real people, explicit or not. People keep donating such items, scrimshaw, to the museum. But how sad that it disappears into the museum collections, and is hidden, it dies. We can only see that which doesn't upset those that are decided arbitrarily. How sad.
  7. I am ashamed to live in this city..my God.. the exhibit is at a level higher than a toddler's head, there is a sign posted that some of the material is not for kids. I hope they will not censor this exhibit for the sake of one person who sees evil where none exists. This is a courageous exhibit in some ways, and it is something that the Vancouver Maritime Museum should be proud of. Yes it pushes the boundaries, but that is what makes it daring.
  8. Just an interesting article I found with more interview of the yard manager at Boothbay. http://www.coastaljournal.com/website/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4026:maines-maritime-heritage-key-to-hms-bounty-hearings&catid=58:regional-news&Itemid=100070
  9. Yes, the pictures of her on the surface seem to corroborate what the yard manager said- with his experience of 40 years vs. the project managers' 5-6. Which is why I posted it. Sorry if it made it seem I didn't agree..
  10. Interesting that the project manager Kosakowski felt the rot was very bad, and yet the yard manager, Joe Jakomovicz disagrees, and feels Kosakowski didn't have enough experience to realize it wasn't life threatening. Jakomovicz makes the case that the Bounty maintained hull integrity even as she was going down, and had her frame been so rotten it would have collapsed during the storm. Jakomovicz makes the case that he had 40 years experience versus 5-6 for Kosakowski. But Jakomovicz was retired as far as I know- so did he see the rot that Kosakowski saw? I don't know. At any rate if it "terrified" Walbridge as much as Kosakowski testified too..then it beggars the imagination that Walbridge should take her to sea into a storm. Even had he been able to skirt the hurricane as intended, the seas would still be rough...
