  1. Ahoy there, I haven't posted in about five years but I find myself in need of some answers. My sword is an Antiqued Torino rapier by Hanwei. I ordered it through a local store, and I've been very pleased with it, but I'm having some problems with the finish on the hilt. It has started to rub off on the quillon block, where my finger rests on the ricasso, to the point that it is quite noticeable. The "antiqued" finish is pretty much black, so the silver underneath looks odd. I have two questions: 1) Is there an easy way to reapply the finish, or anyplace I can take the sword to be refinished? 2) How can I prevent the finish from rubbing off? (I'm assuming gloves will help, but if there are other ways I would like to know.) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Here are a couple of links with images/info of the sword: http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/rapier-sword.html http://therionarms.com/reenact/therionarms_c734.html
  2. I take that back, the story won't be coming out for a bit. I need some more work done to it. In the meantime, let me know what you think of the synopsis.
  3. Hey everyone, I haven't been online in a while, mostly because of finals and a brain tumor, but now i'm back. I've been working on a story that i hope to publish someday, Wrath of the Past. It's a story about pirates, but not the usual seafaring robbers we've come to love. It's a story about air pirates. I'm only on page 70-something right now, but I'm working on it as I type. For a quick synopsis: The world has been destroyed by nuclear warfare, and a dismal layer of cloud has settled on the war-ravaged lands, known as the Cloud Ocean. With the mountaintops as islands, people continue to live, trade, and sail on airships, some more lawful than others. When a pirate ship captures a military vessel with a mysterious passenger, it leads into a quest to stop a dangerous terrorist from obtaining a deadly weapon. If you have the spare time and the will, I would greatly appreciate it if you would read what I have so far and give me some constructive criticism. I'm a sophomore in high school so my writing is far from perfect, and I'd like some advice on how to make the story more interesting. I've included pages 1-77 in this post on a Word document. If you read it, please respond with criticism...be brutal, please, i need the help. The main characters are pirates, so thought the story would be appreciated in a pirate-fan crowd. Thanks in advance, I look forward to your comments!!! --Bartholomew LeBaron
  4. Ahoy, my bullies! My apologies, I was gone on a two-day cruise on the Lady Washington, which (if you don't already know) played the Interceptor in POTC 1. If ye be lookin' fer a true piratical experience, look into bookin' a passage or "battle sail". Out of all the tall ship's I've seen, she is by far the most beautiful. The cruise was a lot of fun. When my friend and I mentioned that we were Sea Scouts, the steward immediately press-ganged us into the crew. We set sail from Antioch, in the delta, and cruised west through San Pablo Bay to Tiberon Penninsula, where we anchored for the night. I was lucky enough to get put on the midnight watch, which meant I had to get up at one in the morning to go out on deck to check the anchor and our position on the chart. I got to go down into the bilges of the ship to check the engine shaft and bilge pumps. It was awesome! At two o'clock I got to go back to sleep, but I was woken again at 4 in the morning to help weigh anchor. I will never under-appreciate an electric windlass again! My friend and I were given two heavy wood spikes to operate the windlass, which was backbreaking work. Even though it was freezing outside, we had shed out coats, hats, and gloves by the time we were done! Then we cleaned the anchor, coiled the rode, faked the chains, and we were done. We cruised south, through the bay, and out under the golden gate! Then the ride began. I am proud to say that neither my friend or I got seasick once. The ship started bucking and rolling and rocking and spinning. It was a blast! We sailed out of sight of land for several hours, surrounded by fog. It was dead quiet, save for the singing crew and engine. We didn't get into port at Half-moon Bay until two in the afternoon, and we were tired, but it was totally worth it! Once I get my pictures downloaded, I'll be sure to post them. In the meantime, look into this awesome pyratical experience!
  5. No one has said Pirates of the Caribbean 1 yet? I thought it was pretty good. POTC 2 was pretty bad, and POTC 3 killed it. But POTC 1 was awesome. Regarding Time Bandits, I wasn't impressed...maybe just because I don;t understand British movies. That movie couldn't have had a worse ending...
  6. Arr, when it comes to the economy, ships like that may indeed be our savior. I know that our own coast guard cutter is quite a gas guzzler! Personally, though, I think she looks a bit too modern...any proper sailin' ship ought to have riggin! If ye want te see a pretty sailin ship, take a look at the Lady Washington. She be one o' the finest vessels I ever laid me deadlights upon.
  7. Me, I'd prefer a cutlass. Perfect for brawlin' aboard ship. Nice and short. That way, when I start slashin' and hackin', I don't damage me precious ship.
  8. Arr, I be itchin te get me hands on that shell cutlass there! Me old cutlass could use a replacement. And that be quite a price range there, mate! Which ones would you recommend?
  9. One thing that used to bug me a lot was that restaurant right next to the Blue Bayou section of the ride. However, I just learned from a website that Walt Disney purposely placed the restaurant there, to make it look like the backyard dinner party of a southern plantation. Thought that was kind of interesting.
  10. It's not bad. The actors for Robinson and Friday are pretty good, but the supporting actors aren't so much. It has some good swashbuckling action: plenty of swordfights, explosions, and so on. Unfortunately, there aren't many other choices in terms of pirate TV shows, so I'll take what I can get.
  11. Wow. I want a backyard like that. Unfortunately, my parent's wouldn't be too keen on the idea. Add some more old-fashioned lanterns and take some pictures of it at night! It would look awesome.
  12. I'm not sure if this topic belongs here, but I couldn't find a better place for it. Anyone who's been to Disneyland should know about the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and hopefully has been on it at least once. Any pirate finatic would go crazy for this experience. While not period correct, it is a lot of fun, and you can immerse yourself in a pirate universe for a few minutes. So, I ask all you people who have been on the ride: what is your favorite part? My favorite is the Blue Bayou section, with the fireflies and crickets and fog. It's so mysterious and calming.
  13. Tell me about it. I just survived a brain tumor (luckily without surgery).
  14. That sounds really weird. But then again, when it comes to the briny deep, there is not shortage of secrets. Currents and tides and whatnot have given me and my crew quite a bit of grief during our cruises.
