What has gone on before:

Jib was marooned after a mutiny. Simply by luck he was rescued by the captain and crew of a Spanish merchant ship, “La Arcelia”. Jib pretended to be a simple Portuguese sailor and the victim of the shipwreck. The Merchant Captain, Fermin Luis Ortega, knew Jib as a pirate but held his tongue. In return for his hospitality and continued silence he has demanded that Jib find for him a piece of rare treasure. Should Obadiah Jib refuse Ortega will notify the Spanish authorities and the pirate will hang.
