Since I've had a Bodhran for years (got it from mom years ago)! I'm wondering if it's period correct, having seen plenty of trad groups play it for years??? Though I can't find the tipper to save my life, I might actually consider learning to play the doggone thing!? Anyone have one?? Rats!

Ahoy! Hey, figured would start something like this again, I think we has something like this sometime back and is not longer part of the Pub archives. Anyway, I know some folks have found some good finds at some of the most oddest of places that would be period enough places. Heck, Kate found some wooden spoons at JoAnn Fabrics. :) Check this yo'r local Target in the candle aisle for a period style lantern! It's a BIG lantern & looks similiar to what most sutlers sell. It's wood and metal and sqaure with a nice handle. Looks like something sold from Jas. Townsend (since they are famous for their period lanterns). Only issue is it has no cover of any sort. Perhap…

I've been approached by an interested party of investors to start our own pyrate magazine, and have taken them up on their offer. Since I've had several quality and organizational disaggreements with the now-stalled Pirates Magazine, I have resigned my position. My reputation as an artist is an important part of my business and I can't lend my name to something I'm not proud of. Thus, I am taking on this new magazine (that will debut in the Fall) without my hands tied in both design and 'feel' of the project This magazine, The Pyrates Way, will be about Pyrates and written BY Pyrates! It will be much more of a pirate enthusiast/reenactor magazine with a much more baw…

Well here's the finished product of using the Capt. coat pattern. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to buy black lining (hey you try and live on $700.00 a month on Government disability!), but I had some expensive linen lining I found at the Thrift store, so I used that. I had to use elastic in the waist of the breeches, because the outfit not only has to fit me, but my companion too, as we both have parts in the skit PRP does (not at the same time!). My concern is that the coat came out looking like an oversized well...uh coat. With frock coat patterns there's somewhat of a body form fit. Did anyone else have a problem with this? (Geez with this new digital camera, …

Some say the Age of Miracles has come to an end but I say differently. In this thread I hope to show, mayhaps with some tongue in cheek, how great patterns and a company that has really done their homework can turn anyone, who is willing, into a major contender in the Living History realm.

Well I only have 2 sets of garments left to make for our crew. I wanted to gloat a bit and post pics of them here. Any comment, remarks, and complaints welcome. Here we go. The fabric was a tan and brown (light brown) with a herringbone pattern. It was hand dyed to the greenish color you see. I did several tests in order to keep the zig zag pattern. Too long in the dye bath and you would lose the pattern and it would be solid green. Its faint but still visible. The fabric is a silk/ cotton blend. If memory serves me right, I think it was 60% silk/ 40% cotton. I lined with a 60% Linen/ 40% Cotton blend. PANT- Are a 95% wool/ 5% spandex blend. (It was on slae at Jo A…

We be thinking of selling of one o' our cannon. Greystar cast iron tube, with 1/4" steel liner, on wood carriage, with bronze trunion caps. Bore is 1-1/2" and the barrel is 32" long. Wheels are cast iron, with needle bearings. The whole thing weighs in the neighborhood of 100 lb or so. It is the one in the back in the photo below. I personally filed off all the casting parting lines from the barrel and drilled the touch hole. She speaks well and with the steel sleeve, can fire a ball, though we have not done so. Offers? I MAY be able to comp the buyer for shipping, in the USA. email me... wrench13@aol.com

I ran into a guy who wearing the infamous "puffy" shirt as featured on the Seinfeld TV series. He was really surprised that I wanted to know where he got it, as exactly ZERO men ask him where he got the shirt. Anyway, it is available from International Male, and is called the Ultimate Poets Shirt-- priced at $69.99. Makes a great pirate shirt (which was the running gag of that TV episode), but purests beware: it is a historically non-authentic acetate/rayon blend. Incidentally, if you purchase the newest Seinfeld boxed DVD set, it comes with a miniature puffy shirt. It would only fit an eight-inch-tall pirate, however. Also on the International Male website is the S…

A Better Business Bureau for piratey shopping experiences. Let's try not to be inflamatory here. Just state the company and a brief description of your experience. This could be a good resource for those of us who do lots of online buying and selling. It can be very difficult to correctly guage the quality of work and customer service by just viewing a website. This doesn't have to be a complaints only section, feel free to cite instances of great service or work.

Hoping someone knows... In Pennsylvania, you can carry a 'handgun' (such as a Queen Anne Flintllock Pistol) in a vehicle without a carry license if it's unloaded and you're on your way to or from a legal shooting place. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be the same exemption for carrying to/from a non-shooting reenactment. So in that case, what would you have to do to a flintlock so that it is no longer considered a firearm? Remove the flint? Fill the barrel with concrete? Anyone know?

This dress is a gift, a thank-you present from Becky Cristler. Becky made my black dress with the red chemise that you've seen me wearing in most of my photos. She said that she wanted to make me something really special- a fancy dress for the pirate's ball and other events where a more elaborate dress could be worn. It was a thank-you for the referrals that have come her way as a result of Tales of the Seven Seas. This dress is red brocade- pretty awesome eh?!!! I haven't got it yet, but I just got the photos and had to show it off a bit!

Arrrr right, Now it's my turn to step up with a version of the Cartouche Box. In keeping with an older thread in "Twill" about how not all boxes would be exactly the same as the Whydah box, here is the start of my hybrid Whydah/Phips box. Whne complete you will have your choice of wooden liner or no liner. It's gonna fit a 3" belt, and if someone wants I can even adapt it to a shoulder sling. No this really don't belong in "How to Address a lady" (Widow Phips.... reaching, but, hey ...) It's not finished yet, but, it's comin' along nicely though. closed .... open .... always tryin' new stuff!

We are starting a new auction to benefit the Columbus Santa Maria. As many of you know, the ship hosts a couple of pirate events per year. Due to budget cut-backs, the City no longer contributes any operating money so the ship has to live on admission tickets and fund-raisers like this. We have some nice merchandise. There are some hand-knitted caps and three different lanterns. Mickey contributed one of his cartridge boxes. Plus other pirate and nautical goods. The items will start showing up starting Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 9 pm EST. Search on seller "MarkAndJennieG". Mark
