I was wondering if any one had some recommendations for either good pictures to inspire garb, or knew of some very good patterns. I had picked up some Simplicity patterns (their colonial costume patterns) and with a bit of altering I found that they worked ok, but I was wondering if there were any other suggestions?

Every once in awhile, whilst slav'in away fer Capn' Pike, workin' my inky fingers to the bone, someone comes in that wants something fun. Yesterday, he came in the form of a sailor wanting a "Polynesian-style Jolly Roger, but sorta gothy, tribal, ya know what I mean?" tattoo. So this is what I gave 'him...and he loved it. Some days, it IS worth chewing out of the restraints!

I know what you're thinking. You're saying, "Gee... I wish I could get some real period-appropriate canvas and make myself some sailor's slops/trousers/a watch coat/a tent. But no one sells real hemp canvas. Whatever shall I do?" Never fear! Reconstructing History is here! We are now stocking real hemp canvas. It's 59" wide, 17.7 oz to the yard, 100% hemp canvas in a plain weave, perfect for your slops/trousers/tent/watch coat. Lookie here: And for the stitch-counters among you: it has a twinned warp just like the sail from the HMS Victory. And at a thread count of 10 warp pairs and 8 weft thread per square centimeter, it's almost exactly the weave of the Vi…

Finding myself in the middle of a Fred and Barney scheme for pistol, blade (and blunderbuss???), I start to wonder about a longarm. I would hope to use said boomer for GAoP. but also if possible for F&I or even Rev war if I ever get involved. Though I wanted one the second I saw the Doglock Blunderbuss, possibly the better investment would be to go with a longarm??? Now comes the question which and why...... :) I've fount these two from Loyalist: 1728 1st model brown bess: http://www.loyalistarms.freeservers.com/fi...fantry1728.html Doglock musket http://www.loyalistarms.freeservers.com/do...oglockmusk.html Any advice? Anyone own one? God I luv starti…

Does anyone know where I can get Mr. Gibb's vest or have one made. From the look of it, it seems to be a short waisted seaman's jacket with the sleeves torn off. I would like the option of having sleeves or no sleeves as in making them removeable. It seems to have lapels with 2 rows of silver buttons, one row on each lapel. From what I can tell from other coats of this type, the sleeves would have the same big cuffs with buttons as in the frock type pirate coat. Any one help a mate out?

It has a 16 inch playing surface and is a lovely 7 inches deep. (What a tone!) Now.... who thinks the outer shell ought to be painted up with Mermaids (in the Celtic tradition) and such like?? (see example of Ravens below Bodhran) Speak up mates... this be my last and BEST drum!

Some of you may have seen this already. But for those of you who have not... it's more a quick & easy access now to get ahold of a pattern to make 18th c stays! Was at JoAnn Fabrics here in Cedar Rapids... looked at the pattern books.. Butterick has a new pattern out to make 18th & 19th c stays & corsets! I'm BEYOND happy, if you are someone like me who has one pattern it's strapless. These new patterns allow for straps or you can not have the straps if you wish! Various good patterns to different eras. But, I'm still not all that impressed with the 18th or even 17th c selection. There was one dress/gown I thought the pattern was rather dead on.. if not …

Is there going to be any official POTC movie merchandise? I don't mean props from the actual film, I mean t-shirts, action figures, replica gold coins, and other such stuff. Anyone heard anything?

I be speak'n 'bout Functional Flintlocks now. I ha'e been browsing some forums, some magazine rag sites, Google'n for vendors. Now I be get'n real serious and hope t' soon make me first purchase. BUT, I would like t' hear from real owners, them pirates with experience and first hand knowledge. Being in California it seems the local pick'ns be slim so it seems like I will be ha'en t' mail order...? agree, disagree? I personally be seek'n as close t' GAoP model as possible, but not interested in the Queen Ann, I want Big'er! But lets open this to ALL with interest, lets hear from the wise on All Things 'Flint'; links, stories, descriptions, tips, cautions, warnings, exc…

So am I the only one knee-deep in me piratical fabrics at th' moment? It seems I'll never get t' the bottom of it all, then again, may'aps I don' wanna! I figured I'd share a table with those that're slavin' over their machines an' see what we're all makin'. Pirate wares are good, others I'm 'appy t' take as well. My latest bit is addin' some stripes onto me very rough an' tumbled pirate jacket front..it needs 'em as well on the sleeves, but I'm pressed for time as it bloody well is with all sorts o' stuff. Wanna try to touch up a few items for Ojai if at all possible. I won' even touch Halloween. My bloody word...

While walking through Revel Grove today Brambleberry called me aside and showed me a treasure. He pulled out the first issue of Pirates Magazine and all I can tell you is that it looks good. This is of the same professional quality as Faerie Magazine. You can find the first issue at Borders and Barnes & Noble, if you want to wait and take your chances it will also be for sale at the festival from the booksellers booth. There are some really good articles and even one by Jean-Michel Cousteau, you won't have any trouble finding it on the rack either because it has Captain Jack Sparrow plastered on it. You can find out more at piratesmagazine.com.

I have posted this one on Ye Olde Tavern so forgive me if some of you have already seen this message... Being a woodcarver and a cabinetmaker, I have made a few wooden chests in my time. Most were of my own design, but culled from various sources or bespoken by a client. I am now looking to create a sort of “all purpose” sea chest that will visually fit in with the general GAoP period, yet be able to be disassembled and stowed flat for the constraints of modern travel. I am certainly capable of making a replica piece, but that is not my intention here. I want to make a series of good, and serviceable chests that will look well enough as a background piece, yet be sturdy…

From what I've read about proper GAoP headwear it is pretty much the cocked hat, monmouth(sp?), and thrum(sp). I've seen another hat style, a bit taller than a tricorn, flat on top, and the brim is down. If that is the proper way to put it. Somewhat like a pilgrim hat without the buckle. Right now I'm watching Yellowbeard, not the best source for piratical ideas I know... But, Blind Pew is wearing that style of hat. Is it historically accurate, if so does it have a name? Thanks, Pantless Pogue (still)

I bought me first "authentic" style corset from Boss Wench at Ren-Faire, but me ta tas so big, they keep sliding down into the corset. What am I doing wrong? I look at pictures of me pyracy pub friends (Quill, Lady Elaine) and they look beautiful in their corsets. I want to be beautiful too in my corset. What is the secret ?

Hey all Over the last week I've been working on a new period item... Leather costrels. I will have one of the two prototypes with me at Beaufort this weekend (one of the prototypes turned out very bad), and I am thinking of taking orders on these in the near future if there is interest. The main advantage of these leather costrels, is they don't break like glass does. They are also historically accurate... Here is link to a 17th century one Here's another link to a late 17th century costrel Here's another image of a costrel from the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, it is close in size to my sample above (photo curtesy of Kate Souris) There is also an image of a c…

Ahoy, Mates. Been a while since I've been on here(Getting involved with a different type of costuming and weaponry, mainly one that involves cowboy hats and sixguns.) Anyhow, with POTC II out, my interests is coming back around to pirates. My brother wants and likes to build his own muzzleloaders, so I've asked him to help me make a shooting replica of Capt. Jack's pistol(I know you can get a replica, but I don't like wallhangers,if it don't go bang, it's no good to me). The main thing I need help with are some good pictures to figure out the barrel, lock, stock styles, and also the sideplates and butt cap, plus the dimensions of the pistol(I'm wanting the one from th…
