I want to make myself a pirate flag. I have the design ready but have no idea how to make one other than starting with a large rectangular peice of cloth. Does anyone out there made their own flags? What materials did you use? How did you put symbols on the flag? Painted on? Sewn on? Does anyone know how the Golden Age pirates such as Blackbeard or Calico Jack made theirs? Thanks for any help.

I'm looking to acquire one.One that is functional, workable, durable.I've heard good things about the Dutch cutlass from MRL,which is coming back onto the market next Spring. Can anybody tell me if it's more that just a wall decoration? What about the other cutlasses from MRL/Atlanta Cutlery?I'm afraid of getting something that will shatter in use? I talked to a knifemaker in Elyria,Ohio, who would make me a copy of the Dutch cutlass, and wanted $3,000. What about the Cold Steel 1917 Cutlass? Is it useable and viable?I was thinking of customizing one.

What places would you guys suggest for buying one? Or patterns for making one? I'm working on putting together (edit) a better costume, while it may not be accurate, and any suggestions and/or personal experiences/references would be appreciated thanks!

I noticed that the pistol that Barbossa used in Pirates of the Caribbean appears to be the same type of pistol that was used by Dawg in Cutthroat Island. I've been searching all over the web for the maker of this particular pistol. But to no avail. I have found a couple pictures online of the pistol... & have a couple more of Barbossa with the pistol. Anyway point me in the right direction to get ahold of a replica, working or non firing, of this special pistol? Otherwise.. does anyone know of a good pistol maker who would be more than willing to make a few of them? I know that there would be a few others wanting this pistol besides myself. Thank ye much, ma…

If you have been a member of this pub for any length of time, you will know that I am a big fan of "group projects". I have Reconstructing History's 1680s Justaucorps pattern (#701) and am going to make it my "fall/winter" project. If anyone else has this pattern, and a camera and wants to "join in" we can post our individual progress, and get help right here at the forum. Anyone else game? Greg

Ahoy there, me hearties! Like the good Captain Clegg (a.k.a Dr. Syn the Scarecrow), my daylight identity be that of a "mild"-mannered illustrator. I was wondering if anyone out there would be interested in custom-made wanted posters? They would feature an "engraved" portrait of you in all yer piratical glory! Think of them being in the style of the old woodcut and print posters. Where would a nasty pirate be without some good press? It worked fer Henry Morgan...now he's got a rum empire to manage! If I get enough replies...I'll be happy to produce a sample and let ye all decide. -Redd

sword question - 1 2 3

Sword question mates - I see many great examples of fine period swords all around. One of the goals I have is to get into reinacting - in particular >> swordplay. I would think a blunted blade for safety would wanted for that. I have not seen anything specifically intended for that. Are the swords I see blunt to begin with? If anyone has words of wisdom and/or experience to share - please do so. Willie the rumrunner if it burns blue, drink it

Avast ye mates! Ye have any flintlock pistols, blunderbuss, muskets, musketoons ye would like to sell? Or are looking for? Real or decorative? Be my pleasure if ye would post here. I am personally looking for a used real flintlock pistol for reenactments. Those new ones are a wee bit expensive for us pirates who have had little blunder or treasure coming in of late. Thanks to ya

1. The first thing you look for in new clothes is whether its made out of linen or wool. 2. The first thing when your in a new town is look for new fabric shops. 3. Go to Jo-Ann fabrics just to get a fix. 4. Order way to much and over buy any fabic, "just to have more should you need it later." 5. Hang on to every last scrap of fabric, cause you have a hard time letting go. (See #4) 6. While walking through the mall you see a new coat and are drawn to it just because it's made of linen. Anyone else??

It's possible this should go in Twill, but I'm going to be leading up to buying something, so I figured I should put it here. When making a decision about period shoes and going with tied or buckled, where is the more common breakover point regarding dates...? In other words, when did buckles become more common than ties on shoes? Also, are there any online resources about just how shoes would have been tied? I couldn't find a specific thread covering this exact point, but easily could have missed it. And now, to the Plunder-correct part of the post, would any of the more... um... affordable shoes (such as those from Jas Townsend or Fugawee) be appropriate for tyin…

Here is an idea. Lets do a weekly online class to make a hand sewn 18th Century shirt. Fall is here and its getting darker and colder outside so this is something we can do to prepare for next spring/summer's event season. (I am sure Hurricane and all the other Florida and West Coast folks are laughing at us now but they are welcome to join in as well!) Here is how it works. Get some fabric and sewing supplies, and we will come up with a weekly "lesson" that breaks down the shirtmaking into little pieces so that by the end of the 8 weeks (I am guessing at a time frame) all the participants should have a completed hand sewn authentic Early 18th Century "pirate" shirt…

I have noticed many post in plunder about Pyrate stuff... but unfortunatly they all kinda turn into little "flaimette wars" (Hey... were all cool here.... so we don't have big flame wars.......just some dissagrements about stuff...) Someone posts about a source for a coat, or boots or hats, Then there are replys about the quality and authentisity of the item.... Then it turns into a discussion about if the item is period correct, or "I don't care if it is period, I still like it..." OK... in the Pub there are the "Authentics" and the "Play Pyrates" both groups see "Plunder" from differnt viewpoints.... and there is no problem with that... we all do what we enjoy.... …

Now that the building of my own little boat has begun in earnest, I thought I'd start a thread to document its progress and construction. Having sailed on Royaliste several times, I was hooked. I decided to start teaching myself to sail, and what better way than on my own small vessel? I hunted around for plans, armed only with a garage full of tools, a father who was willing to help, and a small list of requirements. 1) The boat must be able to fit (on its side) through a three-foot gate. This would allow backyard storage. 2) It should be gaff-rigged, and wooden. Both of these are aesthetic reasons. In addition, the gaff-rig would help me with understanding Royal…

ARTICLE 6: That Man that shall snap his Arms, or smoak Tobacco in the Hold, without cap to his Pipe, or carry a candle lighted without lanthorn, shall receive Moses's Law (that is 40 Stripes lacking one) on the bare Back. Now I don't want to be receivin' Moses' Law or nuthin, so I best be gettin me a pipe with a cap or sumthin'. I've seen them lovely clay Tavern Pipes, but they're not practical for life at sea. What kind of a capped pipe might a pirate use?

I've wanted an 8 Reales coin, a reproduction in silver would be fine, I was looking for a "holed" coin (traditional peasant wear......rather than something in a gold plated bezel bearing an octapus with emerald eyes.....). Found some with potential....reproduced from Atocha coins cast in the silver bars from the Atocha...but getting good information on them is tough. Wouldn't have to be from the Atocha (and sterling would be fine if the coin was what I'm looking for) something before the pillars and waves....Suggestions ?
