Contuary to popular beliefes. The ditty "Sing a song of sixpence" was actualy a coded message used to recruit pirates fer black beards crew. Here be the lyrics an thier meanings. Sing a song of sixpence / A pocket full of rye Blackbeard's standard payment of sixpence a day was considered good money in the 1700s, especially since most pirate vessels did not pay a salary: the crew only received a share of the spoils if they were successful in capturing prizes (and many a pirate ship had to return to port empty-handed after spending several fruitless months at sea). As well, his crew was promised a pocket (a leather bag somewhat like an early canteen which held about a l…

I just heard this one from a Baird at the Estrella War. Loved it...have been searching the internet for it...haven't found it. Any pyriates out there know where it can be found as you have already been there? It went something like this. A good man is hard to find. A hard man is good to find. You can kiss me if you are so inclined, but I'm sailing away in the morning.

Dance with the Wind I like to dance with the wind. It fills my sails and opens my heart. My skirt flutters, veils soar and take me on their magic journey. We tremble like windripples in the chill of twilight not lingering too long in the break between worlds between twilight and dark. The sand snaps tiny biting specks against my ankles like bracelets, they patter me as if I am spinning and then realize: I am spinning. I know where your gate is latched I know where your sloop is anchored I see the string on your kite, lo…

Just wanted t' drop a line that Tom Lewis, a great shantey singer and songwriter, 25 year veteran of Her Majesty's Royal Navy, will be in town Friday, March 5th, at the Highliner Pub, Fishermans Terminal. He's mainly going to be there to listen to the band that's playing, but they'll be havin' him up on stage for a few numbers. There's no cover charge, so if ye wants t' see him in a more casual settin' than a proper gig, this is the place. An' if'n ye'd like more info on the man, be headin' t' www.tomlewis.net. Not exactly a song or shantie, but it should do fine here: It was the night before Christmas. And everyone except a little boy named Hank was asleep. The reason Hank was awake was this: Hank knew what Santa looked like -- or at least what Santa was supposed to look like -- and the man in the middle of the living room was not Santa. Oh, the man did have a long flowing mustache and beard like Santa. But this man’s beard was black and brown and red and not at all white. And it was tangled and bushy and bristly looking, not silky and smooth like Santa’s. And, more importantly, the man was not wearing a red suit with white fur and a big black belt. Or wearing a…

I did a quick search to see if these guys had come up before and didn't see anything. Ran into them at the Bristol Ren Faire and they've been on my playlist ever since. They're not remotely period, but they have a great sound that conjures the popular, fantastical image of pirates. Their genre is what they call "Heavy Mahogany," as it is folk-metal inspired, but played on acoustic, folk instruments unlike most "Pirate Metal" and the like.

Just a wee reminder of the NW Folklife Festival, held in Seattle each Memorial Day weekend, the largest FREE folk festival in the world. There's plenty of sea music all weekend, and parties to go with it, but the best chance to hear a lot o' music in one place will be the sea chantey concert. It'll be Saturday, May 29,from 2:00 to 6:00, and will include such greats as "Pint and Dale", "The Cutters", "Constellation's Crew", "Broadside" and "Shanghaied on the Willamette", to name but a few. Come limber up them rusty pipes an' join us in some fine song an' fine fellowship. Fair winds and full tankards, Trapper

I do this a lot, but I thought I should do it again. It's time to plug the best celtic rock band you might have never heard of if you didn't read this post. Curious? Just go to Kilbrannan.com and click on the multimedia link. There you can enjoy Kilbrannan radio which plays their CDs continually for free! If you like their music, buy their CDs. These are musicians that could actually use the money. I'm sure we all know a few of those. Anyway, go and enjoy songs of love, war, drinking and the sea! * * blackeye susan

It's that time again, the second Friday of the month, and time for sea chanteys on the Wawona. Actually, they'll probably be in the carpenters' shed, unless the weather is stunningly lovely. This month, the great Hank Cramer will be leading the sing. With his great, booming voice, he's a natural for this kind of music, and his stories are hilarious. There's never a cover charge for these events, but donations to defray expenses are welcome, and there will be concessions for sale at the break. All are welcome, and new voices and singers are encouraged. For more information, check out www.nwseaport.org Fair winds, a song in the sails and a full tankard, Trapper

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead When the skies of November turn gloomy. With a load of iron ore - 26,000 tons more Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed When the gales of November came early The ship was the pride of the American side Coming back from some mill in Wisconson As the big freighters go it was bigger than most With a crew and the Captain well seasoned. Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms When they left fully loaded for Cleveland And la…

While we were driving the old land yacht home North last summer from Cali, me and the Powder Monkeys were singing shanties to pass the time. We came up with some Piratical verses to the tune of “Cape Cod Girls”, Sort of a Pyrate news wire take on the oldie, if ye will. Any one else game enough to add another, or two? Old Ed Teach has lost his head Heave away, heave away He’s run aground and now he's dead (repeat chorus) Heave away, heave away Heave away, me bully, bully boys Heave away, heave away Heave A-w-a-y Why, doncha’ make a noise-- We’re bound for PORT-LAND-IA Sweet Anne Bonny has slipped the noose Heave away, heave away She had the bairn, and now sh…
