Funny thing I wondered today.... What musical instruments would you see aboard a ship? I can't think of any besides possibly a piccolo or a tin whistle.

I play a bit of acoustic guitar and was planning on adding an instrument like that to my "persona". Is there a resource for research into historical instruments ... particularly those of coastal New England in the mid-18thC ? What would be allowed on board a typical merchant/privateer rig of the time? Space being at a minimum, I would assume a double bass is out of the question! Wartooth

It's been quiet in this forum as late so just thought I would just throw something together for the fun of it..... Several years ago I had the distinct pleasure of hearing the Corsairs at Silverleaf Ren Faire in Michigan. It seems there has been some changes since then and wonder if anybody could make a comment on their recent reincarnation..... I also would like to recommend to all of you out there that if you have the chance to see "Pint and Dale" grab on with both hands. This Duo is familiar to alot of the East and West Coast Ren Faire people and they do a number of Maritime fests. Singing traditional songs of the sea, along with newer arrangements of some of the…

Lemme tell you a little story about a man named Johnny Tarr He was a hard drinking son of a preacher, always at the bar Lager from the tap or shots of Paddy from the shelf He could open his throttle and throw backa bottl as quickas the devil himself ... Johnny Tarr! Word got around that Johnny Tarr was no pretender, From Clare to here they'd lock up the beer when Johnny went on a bender Down at Dickey Mack's, the Rising Sun, or at the Swan If he was drinking at seven by ten to eleven well all the booze woulb be gone! Johnny Tarr! Chorus: Even if you say it yourself, you wouldn't believe, And I wouldn't trust a person like me, if I were you I wasn't there, I swe…

For all you out there on the east coast keep weather eye for the duo you have heard me speak of in the past...William Pint and Felicia Dale are headed out your way for various festivals, recording sessions and house concerts.....I will be gettin some more information exactly where soon....If you have not heard them, give a listen...you'll like what you hear. i was at Seattles Folklife Festival last year and picked up a Smithsonian recording of sea shanties from 1974...through the liner notes found that William had a cut on the album...he's been around for a while...and Felicia works in perfect harmony with him and she plays the Hurdy Gurdy...and well) So anyways...…

I do this a lot, but I thought I should do it again. It's time to plug the best celtic rock band you might have never heard of if you didn't read this post. Curious? Just go to Kilbrannan.com and click on the multimedia link. There you can enjoy Kilbrannan radio which plays their CDs continually for free! If you like their music, buy their CDs. These are musicians that could actually use the money. I'm sure we all know a few of those. Anyway, go and enjoy songs of love, war, drinking and the sea! * * blackeye susan

Finally!!!! the new CD of my early music ensemble, La Sainte Barbe is available. not pirate music but still period music It is French music from the 16 and 17th century with a bit of traditional French tunes that we presented initially for the 400th anniversary of Quebec City. The local theater is lookin' for people to play ol' pirate jigs & sea shanties. Unfortunately, no fiddle have I.. but I do have a wooden recorder. Anyone have a few good ol' sea shanties that can be used? The director is lookin' for more peeps to be in a play of Treasure Island. Hehehe... I suppose the trademark song for TI 'bottle o' rum' would be good as well as "pirates life for me".. anyone have it in a format for a recorder? Again.. as well as any quick ones to learn for a recorder.

Last year on Valentine's Day, I made a youtube movie for "Before the Mast" using Ronnie Ronalde's "If I were a sailor", because it was, at the same time, a sea shanty appropriate for the time and a love song. Any suggestions for this year? Please, I need a few suggestions, because I can't guarranttee, if they are only 2-3, that I'll find any of those songs. Among several, it is easier to choose... My only idea is "Voici la St. Jean" by Malicorne, because it has been featured a few times in the most active thread we had last year. But if I find something in English, sea-related and love-related at the same time... the better!

I beg the forgiveness of the group for this intrusion. If anybody is offended by free offers of swag, please don't read the rest of this message. I have been authorized by Dave Grossman, the author of The Two-Space War, to generate some cross-genre interest in his book. We want to mail a signed (first printing, first edition, hardback) copy of the book to a member of this board who might be interested. The idea is for you to then post a review for the board, if you find it readable. If you don't, you can always post a "yecch, don't read that trash" message here. No strings attached. No obligation. Just let me know if you are interested. You can find out more about t…

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot, Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We extort, we pilfer, we filch, and sack, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. Maraud and embezzle, and even high-jack, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We kindle and char, inflame and ignite, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. We burn up the city, we're really a fright, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. We're rascals, scoundrels, villans, and knaves, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. We're devils and bla…
