Ahoy, mates! The crew of the Adventure is putting together a stage show and we're looking for original but period lyrics to "Drunken Sailor." We intend to open the show and draw the crowd by singing "What Do Ye Do With A Drunken Sailor?" If you have a favorite lyric that is period but isn't one that is song often, send it in and you may hear it at Lawton, Middlefaire, or Pirate Days in The Colony! Here's an example - "lash up his chest and show him the keel!" I thank ye! Blackbead

I was wondering if you guys can tell me some songs you like that have to do with sailing, pirates, or anything that makes you feel all warm inside that gives the image if sailing your own boat out into the sea (or something like that) I like "Beyond the Sea" by Robbie Williams it could be theme music from like a movie or something too.

Undoubtedly one of my favorite nautical chanteys. However, I've yet to figure out what the heck they're trying to get across. What is the song about? Any ideas? Wartooth

My FAVORITE band, FLOGGING MOLLY have a new cd out on Tues the 14th...and it's got PIRATES!!!! OH YEAH!!! If you haven't listened to these guys (and gal) you need to. It's the best and baddest Irish punk on the planet. I've been following them for awhile now, and they just get better and better. From time to time, they've flirted with the subject of piracy, mostly in the graphics of their shirts. But on the new cd they have at least 3 tracks I know of that are about pirates: Seven Deadly Sins Queen Anne's Revenge Tobacco Island (about Barbados) Wanna listen? Check it out HERE. Go to the Goodies area, for mp3 files of Seven Deadly Sins and QAR. Trust me, this group is…

I've been trying to research what a common simple woodwind instrument would have been from 1690 to 1720 that a sailor may have carried with him aboard ship. I think this period of time is considered part of the Baroque Period. I keep leaning toward the Flageolet [whistle flute], but I need input from those who are more knowledgable about musical instruments during this period of time. I have virtually no knowledge of music and instruments, because I have never been very musically inclined. But I wouldn't mind trying my hand at learning to play a small Flageolet-type instrument or fife, so that I could play some simple period songs at living history events some day while …

Coming soon! Bridands Folie debut album "Fog & Fire" I've been privileged to hear most of these songs live & to hear a few of the rough cuts for the final CD. I think music lovers, especially fans of sailing songs & historic tunes are going to be very impressed. Jake & Karen are a fantastic musical duo. This CD is a define "must add" to any well rounded collection.

For Bob Kotta, chantey man extraordinaire, who crossed the Bar 5 years ago on April 19, and for Steve Guthe, chantey singer, great guy, part of Victory Sings at Sea, who just passed, I offer the song, "Heaven's a Bar" Heaven's a Bar Tim Laycock Heaven's a bar down by the dock Where the liquor is free they keeps a great stock There's always a place, always a smile For a sailor come home from sea For a sailor come home from sea The girls are all beauties they dance and they sing They'll treat an old tar like a lord or a king Heaven's a bar down by the dock Where there's liquor for all and it's free There in the snug drinking with me Shipmates return f…

This is a kind of semi-piratical video production of the famous shanty , sung in French! No real robbing or pillaging, but lots of comely youngsters singing, sailing and donning pirate-like costume.

Silkie alluded to this in another thread & I thought it might be worth it's own consideration. What songs & music do we *know* are documentable to the GAoP? A heavy focus on shanties is good, but I'm interested in hearing all period appropriate music. After all sailors weren't completely disconnected from the rest of the culture at the time. I've recently read some of that blue book, Sailors Songs & Sea Shanties (?). There is a lot of information however the arrangement makes it hard to find only the GAoP songs. I have also ordered a copy of Playford's English Dancing Master and have been listening to some of the little tunes from that. I believe it's the…

I first mentioned this on Pirate Pop, in response to movie lists, but setting down to do a "think", I guess it might get a better response here. Many Many (more than I want to count) moons ago, when presented for the first time, the Garfield the cat Halloween special, had a pirate segment in it. (unless I be dreaming it) And the major part of this one segment was of Garfield and the dog (odi?) out on a boat on the rough sea. It was accompanied by a Sea Shantie, with a recurring line, "Yo Ho, Yo Ho, over the bounding sea we go, Yo Ho, Yo Ho, where ever the four winds blow" or something to that extent. The Shantie told a story, but I can't remember the words, and in …

Well, all... looking at figuring out a verse to in this song. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ghost Ship 1 more year boys and a day, we'll set sail for far away; 'til then we toil, & work & sweat, 'til we pay off our cursed debt. We've been through the seven seas, we keep sailing with no breeze; ___?___ no anchor, touch no land, with death's head grins & skeleton hands. At the edge we heard a cry, sailed on passed & still we fly; We work the sails without wind, for seven helms, for we have sinned. We've forgotten all the laws, lost in time the curses' caused; A ship of inmates, a ship of death, the sails are filled by the Devil's breath. One more …
