First and foremost, The Stranglers song "Golden Brown" is breathtaking. I adored it upon first listen in the early 80's. A true rarity and one of my best discoveries~ the group Dark Orange, their cd entitled "The Garden of Poseidon". Super rare, an import I gave a listen to at a cd shop years ago. I fell in love. I'm not sure how easy this would be for anyone to find, but if you love a combination of romamtic shanties and sea themed tunes, this is a true jewel. It's always my definitive summer sea dreaming cd.

Here... I got some lyrics from Capt'n Slappy! (He made it himself, and it goes te thar tune of OH SUSANA! I'M A PIRATE! by Cap'n Slappy Oh, a pirate's life is free from strife his journey to begin without a troubled, nagging wife a keepin' him from sin. I've set me sails, I've got me peg, a compass and tattoo, a parrot I call "Pauly" and a sword to run ye through. CHORUS: I'm A PIRATE! Now Don't Give Me No Sass! Or, I'll walk up right behind ye, lad, and kick ye in the ass! Thars a nor-east blowin' in me face a gail comin' this way. We'll stay right here and drink some more, ship out another day. And the wenches they do make me smile I think they bring…

There once was a Pirate captain named Paolo. He was well feared in many parts of the world, especially Caldonia, (modern day scotland) where he was widely known for his brutality. He was also known for his fear of drowning. Captain Paolo could not swim. When his ship, which he boldy named after himself, the HMS PAOLO, was hit by a storm, it appeared that the vessel would sink. Faced with the prospect of drowning, Paolo decided to take his own life. However, the storm cleared, just as he pulled the trigger. Without their captain, the crew was forever lost at sea. Reports were made of seeing the captainless ship still wandering the seas, even hundreds of years later…

I wanted to start a thread where we can all share the songs we've collected and help expand each others repertoires - this way we can more easily join in at events. I've added a few in the keys we do them in to get us started I hope this is a useful thread. As you can see we've taken some lyrical license, we claim pyrate!! You can download Scottish singer/songwriter James Yorkston's gorgeous song of life as a sailor, "Comfort in Rum", free from the following page: http://planetconcert5.free.fr/Yorkston/Yorkston.htm "Here's to the captains with whom I Sought comfort in rum, for I'll toast them no more The cat's got my tongue With them I've sailed through storms And rowed through still waters with oars To return to your shores" ... along with 5 other MP3s of his live acoustic performance, including the brilliant "Shipwreckers". Cheers, Hester

For the renfest and any other thing the Jade Dragon crew does, we stick to songs we know are not copyrighted or are listed as free domain and/or traditional. Sometimes we are inspired by versions from our favourite other performers but we are not doing their songs but more motivated and formed on their variation of a song. I've had a number of people come up to me with a list of songs they want to perform at BCRF. I remind them that their signed agreement/contract with us states that they are responsible for any copyrights or the like. We don't design their sets so we can't really control their performance in this way. I always tell them that the songs we (cast at …

I just wrote this sea shanty, to be sung by the crew of the Cynosure in my short novel The Treasure of Ashur MacBain, although I expect no more than a stanza or two will actually appear in the finished story. I conceived of it as a halyard shanty, but I'm not sure the rhythm is right for that. The one halyard shanty I know, Blow the Man Down, spaces the effort out more evenly between every line. This one sounds more like What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor? or Santy Ano, capstan shanties where the sailors push several times on the chorus. It uses the tune of , with a longer pause between stanzas for the chorus.CRO'JACK WILL Oh, Cro'jack Will had squinty eyes And…

Dance with the Wind I like to dance with the wind. It fills my sails and opens my heart. My skirt flutters, veils soar and take me on their magic journey. We tremble like windripples in the chill of twilight not lingering too long in the break between worlds between twilight and dark. The sand snaps tiny biting specks against my ankles like bracelets, they patter me as if I am spinning and then realize: I am spinning. I know where your gate is latched I know where your sloop is anchored I see the string on your kite, lo…

Eliza Lee Oh, the smartest packet you can find, Ah he, ah ho, are you most done? Is the fair "Rosalind" in the Blackwall line! So the clear the track, let the bulgine run, To my aye rig a jig in the low back car, Ah he, ha ho, are you most done? With Eliza Lee all on my knee, So clear the track, let the bulgine run. The fair "Rosalind" one bright summer's day, Ah he, ah ho, are you most done? Went sailing away far out over the bay, So the clear the track, let the bulgine run, To my aye rig a jig in the low back car, Ah he, ha ho, are you most done?
