I was wondering, what instruments are period (GAoP) and might have been used by pirates. I was thinking concertina, but I'm not sure what else.

I'm looking for lyrics for a lovely song called "Skellig" or "Maid of the Mariners". The refrain goes something like this: The maid of the mariners watches our way as the ships go to see by night and by day with our eyes on the horizon and our hearts close to home she guards us wherever we roam I've more than likely got some of those lyrics wrong, thus my search for the actual lyrics. Thanks in advance for your help.

Jimmy Buffett and Bob Marley are good starts. They have the Island theme to them.

Went into a Petco store recently and in the 'fish' dept. there was piped music that was the sound of the sea splashing against a wharf along with the distant sound of ship or bouy bells and sea gulls. No words, no instrumental stuff, just natural background 'mood music'. Getting a hold of a CD like that would be I thought a nice background noise for a pirate bar area in the house. Checked with the store to see what the CD might be, but was told that it is piped in from corporate on the computer feed. Was wondering if anyone has a handle on this kind or other 'background' noise/music that would be an 'proper' background sound for a pirate bar? Other sound tracks could…

You can download Scottish singer/songwriter James Yorkston's gorgeous song of life as a sailor, "Comfort in Rum", free from the following page: http://planetconcert5.free.fr/Yorkston/Yorkston.htm "Here's to the captains with whom I Sought comfort in rum, for I'll toast them no more The cat's got my tongue With them I've sailed through storms And rowed through still waters with oars To return to your shores" ... along with 5 other MP3s of his live acoustic performance, including the brilliant "Shipwreckers". Cheers, Hester

Hi, I keep humming this song, and it's driving me crazy. I am sure someone here knows the most appropriate lyrics. I have found different versions, but I would like to know which set of lyrics is the most accurate. Thanks ahead of time!

Anyone here interested in being a drummer for a pirate reenacting group? Or a drummer for a early colonial militia group? Or both? Or better yet, anyone here have a hurdy gurdy and want to join up with some pirates? I figure this is a shot in the dark, but one never knows unless one asks. Come to think of it, I'll settle for a player of any period instrument. You supply the music, I'll supply the clothes. Oh, you don't have to be from or in Maryland, just willing to travel here. Thanks.

I just discovered a band by the name of Rustmonster. Their new album, "Last Voyage of the Black Betty" is entirely pirate themed (and entirely odd.) One of their songs, for example, is a gem that features a pirate reading verbatim from the Young Officer's Sheet Anchor, set to light jazz music. I'll be playing it tonight on Bilgemunky Radio, if anyone wants to check it out!

What'll we do with a drunken captain, Earl-aye in the morning? Lock him up with the gouvernor's daughter! Sling him in the long boat till he's sober! Take the Baby and call it Bo'sun! Take 'im and shake 'im, try an' wake 'im! Well, what shall we do?

My first posting and haven't had a chance to real all the rules and go through all the postings. Was wondering if there were any pirate songs here in the mp3 format or something similar. I'd like to give a listen to some, whatever is available. Followed a couple of mentioned links but only found lyrics or artists, no songs. Thanks for taking the time to read this & in advance for any assistance you might be kind enough to lend.

Ahhh.... more and more fun here. If you had a chance to have a collection of songs or a soundtrack for your or about your pirate persona... what songs would you have on that soundtrack or collection? I'd have more than one disc obviously. One or two that is lyrical songs and one of two that is Instrumental. The lyrical songs: It's My Life by Bon Jovi Blaze of Glory by Bon Jovi Dare by Stan Bush In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins Alcohol by Brad Paisley Sympathy For The Devil by Guns N Roses Surrender by KD Lang Instruments of Destruction by NRG Die Another Day by Madonna Could I Have This Kiss Forever by Enrique Iglesias & Whitney Houston Come Into…

Well, today is Plough Monday, the first Monday after Epiphany (January 6th), when the Xmas holidays officially ended, and farm workers had to go back to their usual labour, such as ploughing the fields. Of course, heading back to work after a holiday is never much fun, so the plough boys would ham it up a bit with some extended misrule that involved sword dancing, etc.: http://www.halikeld.f9.co.uk/traditions/st...tots/stots2.htm Now, while ploughing the fields may have been an onerous chore, it was still preferable to being impressed into the Navy! Here's a broadside ballad that dates back to 1797, in which a handsome plough boy is abducted by the Press Gang at the i…

Silkie alluded to this in another thread & I thought it might be worth it's own consideration. What songs & music do we *know* are documentable to the GAoP? A heavy focus on shanties is good, but I'm interested in hearing all period appropriate music. After all sailors weren't completely disconnected from the rest of the culture at the time. I've recently read some of that blue book, Sailors Songs & Sea Shanties (?). There is a lot of information however the arrangement makes it hard to find only the GAoP songs. I have also ordered a copy of Playford's English Dancing Master and have been listening to some of the little tunes from that. I believe it's the…

Yeah, yeah, I know this area is for music. However, my group and I do *not* sing - we do comedy. And hang it all, I am very proud of our first CD, "Nautical Fairy Tales: Vol 1, Tails of the Seas." It has taken us a long time to get it produced and well, you all know how proud a new momma is of her kid ... think of this CD as my "kid." Not exactly a song or shantie, but it should do fine here: It was the night before Christmas. And everyone except a little boy named Hank was asleep. The reason Hank was awake was this: Hank knew what Santa looked like -- or at least what Santa was supposed to look like -- and the man in the middle of the living room was not Santa. Oh, the man did have a long flowing mustache and beard like Santa. But this man’s beard was black and brown and red and not at all white. And it was tangled and bushy and bristly looking, not silky and smooth like Santa’s. And, more importantly, the man was not wearing a red suit with white fur and a big black belt. Or wearing a…
