This is a song I wrote and video I made to go with it. Hope you enjoy it! Based on a joke I heard years ago! rob k can also be heard on soundclicC HiFi http://www.soundclic...0&q=hi&newref=1 LoFi http://www.soundclic...0&q=lo&newref=1 The Pirate Long ago there was a pirate from a rough motley band; Had a peg leg, had an eye patch, had a hook for a hand. Sure and one day some one asked him how he lost all his parts. Well he heaved a great sigh and then this story he starts. We attacked a Spanish galleon on a dark, moonless night. I was climbin' up a grapple to get into the fight. Someone reached out from a port hole and he hacked off me …

Ahoy there mates!! Yet another preview of Henry Martin: Around the Bay! This time it's one of my first favorite "pirate" tunes... New York Girls. We opted for the less popular version, detailing the robbery of a sailor when he goes to bed with a "New York Girl" and features the chorus: "All you New York Girls, you love us for our money!" The CD is available now at: www.piratesinc.com ! Cheers, mates! Chris Henry Martin

I've been trying to research what a common simple woodwind instrument would have been from 1690 to 1720 that a sailor may have carried with him aboard ship. I think this period of time is considered part of the Baroque Period. I keep leaning toward the Flageolet [whistle flute], but I need input from those who are more knowledgable about musical instruments during this period of time. I have virtually no knowledge of music and instruments, because I have never been very musically inclined. But I wouldn't mind trying my hand at learning to play a small Flageolet-type instrument or fife, so that I could play some simple period songs at living history events some day while …

Hope I'm asking this in the right section. One of my pirate characters is a free black Haitian woman who was a street musician before she went to sea. I asked about suitable period instruments on another forum and one of the suggestions was a rebec. From what I could find out, it was fading in popularity, but still in use. In the right hands, it doesn't sound half bad. I'm kind of leaning toward it, since it fulfills most of my requirements (portable, cheap, gender/race-neutral, etc.). Problem is, while I know it was readily available in Europe, I have no idea if they were readily available in the Caribbean. Why not switch her to a violin, you ask? Because I've heard it…

For the renfest and any other thing the Jade Dragon crew does, we stick to songs we know are not copyrighted or are listed as free domain and/or traditional. Sometimes we are inspired by versions from our favourite other performers but we are not doing their songs but more motivated and formed on their variation of a song. I've had a number of people come up to me with a list of songs they want to perform at BCRF. I remind them that their signed agreement/contract with us states that they are responsible for any copyrights or the like. We don't design their sets so we can't really control their performance in this way. I always tell them that the songs we (cast at …

OK we have 5 new tunes so far for our 6th venture into recording, the working title for the CD is "Ship Happens", also the name of one of the tunes. What think you of the name? Too risque, for us? Bear in mind our other CD titles: Meet The Brigands Bloody Seamen Pirate Scum X Inner Buccaneer As usual, we perform the new stuff for a season, and then record it, so release will not be til Yule or thereabouts.

Attach an audio file to a post, is it possible? Failing that you'll need to search out Waiting for Bonaparte by Men They Couldn't Hang for Smugglers The boat rides south of Ailsa Craig in the waning of the light There's thirty men in Lendalfit to make our burden light And there's thirty horse in Hazleholm with the halters on their heads All set this night up on your life if wind and water speed Smugglers drink of the Frenchmens wine and the darkest night is the smugglers time Away we ran from the excise man It's a smugglers life for me It's a smugglers life for me Oh lass you have a cozy bed, and cattle you have ten Can you not live a lawful life and live wit…

The Irish Rovers were around even before my grandpa. My grandpa is an old seadog himself, having been in the Merchant Marines and the Navy. From what he's told me he should have a mansion in Davey Jone's Locker. There songs are songs of the sea, the pub, and nationality of Ireland. Here's some of their stuff. Farewell to Nova Stotia Craciunal in Killarney(Christmas in Killarney) The Day the Tall Ships Came Finnegan's Wake The Pub with No Beer What do you all think?

The first song I heard of the Poxy Boggards seemed really random, but it was listening to them that got me into sea shanties and tavern songs. Most of what I hear from them is tavern songs, but they have a few sea shanties too. Here are a few links to some of their songs. These particular links will take you to someone who drew his own art for the videos posted. Holy Ground And, the first song I heard, .My late night pre-bed routine has become very relaxing. I sit at the computer listening either to the Boggards or to the Irish Rovers, smoke my pipe, and enjoy a good drink.

While on my New England visit I took in an afternoon at Mystic Seaport Museum. As always the feel of stepping back in time to a whaling Community two centuries ago is appearant everywhere. At 4pm, aboard the Whaling Bark "C.W.Morgan", they observe the first Dog Watch. My friend and "Bones" virtuoso extraordinaire, Tim Reilly and three other staff members were doing what sailors do during this "off time" when not eating. One young lady was making a ditty bag and the others were making music. No Shanties as there was no work being done but "Fo'c's'l tunes" or "forebitters". Songs for the crews enjoyment. I sang the "Amphratryte". My favorite forebitter as the tunes went 'ro…
