I recently downloaded Skip Henderson's song "Billy Bones" from iTunes and I'm trying to find the lyrics. I've done searches on google and so forth and turned up nothing. Skip's myspace page has no lyrics and his personal homepage appears to be down. Spiral Six had tribute page with the lyrics but it mysteriously vanished before I could copy them down. so... does anyone have the lyrics to Billy Bones?

Stan Rogers is a great Canadian Maritime singer. His songs are almost exclusively about the sea and include traditional stuff as well. He also wrote the famous pirate related song, Barrett's privateers. Although Stan died in 1990, he's still worth giving a listen to.

Does any one have any good web sites with lists of sea shanties and their words? Even better, maybe a midi or mp3 along with that so one can see how the tune goes? ~Mad Gracie~

The Brigands will be releasing our 5th CD, "Inner Buccaneer" later this Winter, but we would like to have all our friends here on Pyracy get an early taste. The link allows you to listen to a tune we call The Trunnion Reel. Enjoy! The Trunnion Reel from The Brigands

I've bin readin' again- this time The Beggar's Opera by John Gay. Gay used traditional songs and ballads and put new words to 'em, to make this play. Essentially, this excellent piece of theatre upholds harlotry, theivery, and violence as the ideal existence. The characters all be cutpurses, highwaymen, prostitutes, pimps, and other fine folk. Some of the songs include such immortal lyrics as: "Tis Woman that seduces all Mankind, From her we first are taught the wheedling Arts Her very Eyes can cheat when most she's kind She tricks us of our Money with our Hearts. For her like Wolves by Night we roam for Prey Inducing any Frauds to bribe her Charms For Suits of Lo…

I just wanted to write to let you pirates know about a fantastic sea song band from Newfoundland, named Great Big Sea. They really are one of the best I've ever heard, with a mix of traditional and modern songs. You can buy their albums on Amazon, though I got them cheaper through Amazon.ca (Amazon Canada), even with international shipping added in.

Hello all I'm having a pirate-themed party, and I'm looking for some really fun, jaunty music to play. Not really looking for shanties as such, just lively, upbeat piratey type stuff that you could dance to (If you'd drunk enough bumbo, which I'll also be having, since finding out it's an authentic pirate drink. Has anyone tasted it? It's delicious - perfect summer drink! Anyway...). Thanks a lot for your help Peter

As I said I would I would like to throw this out there for anybody that might be interested. The weekend before Thanksgiving this year myself and Slo Gin will be attending a 4 day musical workshop that is strictly focused on sea shanties..... The camp is put on by Hank Cramer along with whats looks to be an excellent staff....Hank has been the Shantyman on the Lady Washington and other tall ships he also has a group called "Constellations Crew" that does concerts for the preservation on the USS Constellation that is in Baltimores inner harbor. While it might be a little late to get registered for this one, this is the 3rd camp in 2 years.....so one should be coming …

Here be me tune: (not mine, o' course) THE ROBBER GIRL Come listen a while and I'll tell you a story of three merry gentlemen riding along They met a fair maiden and unto her did say, "We're afraid this cold morning might do you some harm." "Oh no, kind sir," said the maid, "you're mistaken to think this cold morning might do me some harm. Yet there is one thing I crave, and it lies twixt your legs sir if you give me that it will keep me warm." "Oh since you do crave it, my dear you shall have it, if you'll come with me under yonder green tree. oh since you do crave it, my dear you shall have it, …

Ok.... I'm always going to these "pirate" events and everyone when I get there is singing the "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum" song. What's the deal with that? The song is from the 1920's! Aren't we suppose to be doing golden age of pirace? We're talking 200 years before the song was written! I'm sorry....but this just licks the chocolate off my candy..... This wasn't written to offend anyone, it's just something that's been on my mind for a bit........ Cheers, AC

I got my "Portuguese" baroque guitar yesterday. I bougth a bout a year ago an old viola da terra (small tradittionnal portuguese guitar) It was probably from the 1930s but it was not in very good shape. I knew that the size of the instrument would make a nice baroque guitar so I removed the damaged table and finger board and brougth it to my luthier. about 13 month later, here it is: It also features a dual passive transducer connected to a 1/8 mini jack nicely inserted in a water buffalo horn endpin. The pegs are actually 4:1 planetary pegs that imitate the look of traditionnal wooden pegs but with the versatility of modern guitar tuners. I'm very happy with th…
