For the renfest and any other thing the Jade Dragon crew does, we stick to songs we know are not copyrighted or are listed as free domain and/or traditional. Sometimes we are inspired by versions from our favourite other performers but we are not doing their songs but more motivated and formed on their variation of a song. I've had a number of people come up to me with a list of songs they want to perform at BCRF. I remind them that their signed agreement/contract with us states that they are responsible for any copyrights or the like. We don't design their sets so we can't really control their performance in this way. I always tell them that the songs we (cast at …

From what I have been able to research, there are lots of songs circa 1700 or so that are ABOUT pirates, but precious few tunes that may have logically been sung BY pirates. My thoughts: Whaling songs and shanties are out. Possibly some few broadside ballads may have trickled aboard. For those British ships and men that went on account, possibly some songs popular in Royal Navy may have been sung, though it's hard to imagine men who are now wanted for piracy singing songs about hearts of oak and british tars. Any comments on the above or better yet a lubber line in the right direction from the august body of knowledgeable folk here?

I wanted to start a thread where we can all share the songs we've collected and help expand each others repertoires - this way we can more easily join in at events. I've added a few in the keys we do them in to get us started I hope this is a useful thread. As you can see we've taken some lyrical license, we claim pyrate!! The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is extremely Pirate friendly. Their 2003 season reflected this most notably with a Pirate Weekend and with sea shanties taking a larger role in their Finale In Song. I picked up both the 2003 and 2002 CDs at the Faire this summer, and cannot stop playing them. They are fantastic! The PA Ren Faire is now offering them for sale for $15 each, and they're well worth it. You can see the information here: PA Ren Faire and you can order them by calling (717) 665-7021, ext. 129, or by stopping by the Carriage House Wine Shop at the Mt. Hope Winery, in Manheim, PA. The track listings are: SONGS OF SAILORS AND SIRENS (2003) Wild Rover Chand…

Most chivalrous fish of the ocean To ladies forbearing and mild, Though his record be dark, is the man-eating shark, Who will eat neither woman nor child. He dines upon seamen and skippers, And tourists his hunger assuage, And a fresh cabin boy will inspire him with joy If he's past the maturity age. A doctor, a lawyer, a preacher, He'll gobble one any fine day, But the ladies, God bless 'em He'll only address 'em Politely and go on his way. I can readily cite you an instance Where a lovely young lady of Breem, Who was tender and sweet and delicious to eat Fell into the bay with a scream. She struggled and flounced in the water, And signaled in vain …

Hope I'm asking this in the right section. One of my pirate characters is a free black Haitian woman who was a street musician before she went to sea. I asked about suitable period instruments on another forum and one of the suggestions was a rebec. From what I could find out, it was fading in popularity, but still in use. In the right hands, it doesn't sound half bad. I'm kind of leaning toward it, since it fulfills most of my requirements (portable, cheap, gender/race-neutral, etc.). Problem is, while I know it was readily available in Europe, I have no idea if they were readily available in the Caribbean. Why not switch her to a violin, you ask? Because I've heard it…

I'd have more than one disc obviously. One or two that is lyrical songs and one of two that is Instrumental. The lyrical songs: It's My Life by Bon Jovi Blaze of Glory by Bon Jovi Dare by Stan Bush In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins Alcohol by Brad Paisley Sympathy For The Devil by Guns N Roses Surrender by KD Lang Instruments of Destruction by NRG Die Another Day by Madonna Could I Have This Kiss Forever by Enrique Iglesias & Whitney Houston Come Into…

I heard the Mermaid Song every Friday morning of my youth, thanks to a DJ on an obnoxious Central NJ radio station. He would play this every Friday morning, because of the opening lyrics. I was thrilled to find it on a CD put out by the performers of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. They do a fine cover of the song (the performance of the ship's cook must be heard to be believed!) but the lyrics were a bit different than I had remembered. I've included a slightly different version below. Has anyone heard any variations of this song? The Mermaid Song Twas Friday morn when we set sail And we were not far from the land When the captain, he spied a lovely mermaid …
