I was wondering if you guys can tell me some songs you like that have to do with sailing, pirates, or anything that makes you feel all warm inside that gives the image if sailing your own boat out into the sea (or something like that) I like "Beyond the Sea" by Robbie Williams it could be theme music from like a movie or something too.

Ahoy! I am new here and didn't see this mentioned before, so here goes. My absolute favorite pirate song is Friggin' In The Riggin' as performed by the Sex Pistols (or what was left of them after Johnny Rotten left). I know it is a traditional song, but their version cracks me up every time.

I was wondering, what instruments are period (GAoP) and might have been used by pirates. I was thinking concertina, but I'm not sure what else.

What instruments do you play or do you sing? I've just taken up the violin (less than a week, LOL) and before that played piano for years. But it has been 15 years since I gave up my last piano and my last lessons were in about 1978, so it's been a loooooooooong time! But I still remember how to read music and lo' n' behold, I've found a violin teacher who has turned out to be a pirate!!! She and her husband have both joined Tales of the Seven Seas and are all jazzed up to bring their instruments and along on the Valentines sail aboard the Royaliste. She's enthusiastic about teaching me lots of seafaring tunes once I'm far enough along to handle them. I've had two less…

My FAVORITE band, FLOGGING MOLLY have a new cd out on Tues the 14th...and it's got PIRATES!!!! OH YEAH!!! If you haven't listened to these guys (and gal) you need to. It's the best and baddest Irish punk on the planet. I've been following them for awhile now, and they just get better and better. From time to time, they've flirted with the subject of piracy, mostly in the graphics of their shirts. But on the new cd they have at least 3 tracks I know of that are about pirates: Seven Deadly Sins Queen Anne's Revenge Tobacco Island (about Barbados) Wanna listen? Check it out HERE. Go to the Goodies area, for mp3 files of Seven Deadly Sins and QAR. Trust me, this group is…

I'm throwing a Pirate Party on the beach for me Intended on his 40th birthday this summer and we wanted to spend some of the party singing Pirate Songs and the like. Even so, not everyone who is coming is well versed in traditional Shanties. Can anyone make a suggestion as to where I might find lyrics on line for the traditional sea songs? Iphi

Ahoy pirates... Me mates and meself down here in Santa Fe are starting a sea song group. We plan t' sing fer fun and money, mainly going to the Plaza and singing for tips. Only problem is, Santa Fe is hundreds and hundreds of miles from any major body of water. So I'm trying to think of a really good name for the group that is piratey and deserty all at the same time. (We're thinking of having a sign next to the tip jar that says "help these poor landlocked pirates get home to a ship...") Any ideas?

Cordingly, in "Under the Black Flag" states that Stevenson "---took the Dead Man's Chest from At Last by Charles Kingsley." Has anyone seen this book and know how it relates to the song? Many years ago I read an article, I no longer remember where, by a man who claimed to have tracked down the song's origin. He said that Dead Man's Chest was a tiny island in the Caribbean and that the song commemorates a shipwreck there, not a mutiny. After the wreck, the marooned crew got into the ship's cargo of rum. Some drank themselves to death, or killed each other in fights. When relief arrived, there were only fifteen survivors, thus: "drink and the devil had done for the rest."…

If you'd like to host MP3 files on pyracy.com for folks to enjoy, I can set up a section for that at pyracy.com/music - email vox@pyracy.com to arrange. I can also post links to your files if you already have them hosted elsewhere. You can upload files into this forum, SEA SHANTIES - after you do so I'll eventually move them to pyracy.com/music and place a link from your post.

Be forewarned, this is pretty cruel when you think about it much, but it's sort of funny in a twisted way. It's from Emily Cockayne's book Hubbub: "To complete the scene [in Marcellus Laroon (III) picture of noisy musicians called The Execrable Concert from 1770], the 'musician' (far right) pulls the tails of three cats imprisoned in a piano-like contraption similar to the one described by Athanasius Kircher in 1650. Cats were positioned according to the pitch of their cries, issued when a spike was driven through their tails. This device was reportedly invented to cheer up a stressed Italian prince." (Cockayne, p. 123) (I, in fact, do own a cat and would never even c…

Ahoy, mates! The crew of the Adventure is putting together a stage show and we're looking for original but period lyrics to "Drunken Sailor." We intend to open the show and draw the crowd by singing "What Do Ye Do With A Drunken Sailor?" If you have a favorite lyric that is period but isn't one that is song often, send it in and you may hear it at Lawton, Middlefaire, or Pirate Days in The Colony! Here's an example - "lash up his chest and show him the keel!" I thank ye! Blackbead

I was thinking about pyratical love songs, and t'be honest, I couldn't think of many. The only one that really comes to mind is The Water Is Wide, especially the James Taylor version. Of course, Mari Mac is also pyratical, and I *guess* it could be considered a love song... Any thoughts?

Hear is a time to use your head (if you still got one) to be creative. Try to think up some new verses to the song "The Drunken Sailor." "The Drunken Sailor" is fo'c'sle song. In other words it is a song sang when there is nothing to do and the crew of the ship is board. What shall we do with the drunken sailor, What shall we do with the drunken sailor, What shall we do with the drunken sailor, earlye in the morning. (What ever the verse that you create is) ex, Shave his belly with a rusty razor Shave his belly with a rusty razor, Shave his belly with a rusty razor, earlye in the morning. Way, way up she rises, Way, way up she rises, Way, way up she rises,…

Been doing a little reading here and there when I can. And one book was having a blurb in it about the sea shanties. A variety of them were used depending upon the task at had aboard ship that kept the sailors in sync and in rhythm. Recommendations on what shanties out there are good period style chant to keep the deck hands and the rigging rats unified in their tasks and work? ~Lady B

Lemme tell you a little story about a man named Johnny Tarr He was a hard drinking son of a preacher, always at the bar Lager from the tap or shots of Paddy from the shelf He could open his throttle and throw backa bottl as quickas the devil himself ... Johnny Tarr! Word got around that Johnny Tarr was no pretender, From Clare to here they'd lock up the beer when Johnny went on a bender Down at Dickey Mack's, the Rising Sun, or at the Swan If he was drinking at seven by ten to eleven well all the booze woulb be gone! Johnny Tarr! Chorus: Even if you say it yourself, you wouldn't believe, And I wouldn't trust a person like me, if I were you I wasn't there, I swe…

Hi, For a writing project I'm working on (same one I was asking about the ships for), I'm trying to figure out what sea shanties would've been around by 1721. As far as I can tell, "All For Me Grog" and "Health To The Company" were written after 1721, and I'm wondering if there are any others out there I could use. Thanks!
