A hearty warning here -- if ya haven't seen "Pirates of the Caribbean" ya might not want to be reading this here. I thought it would be fun for those who've seen the movie, to discuss how they liked it, what they liked about it, without having to worry about spoiling the story for anyone. Now -- my question is: Does anyone understand about Capt. Jack Sparrow's "compass that doesn't point north?" So what's special about it? I'm wondering if it just points the way to Isla de Muerta. If so, how? Where'd he get it? I'm also wondering if this indicates a possible "prequel" to explain maybe how he found Isla de Muerta in the first place? For my review of the movie, acc…

The classic 1990 version of Treasure Island, considered by many to be the best pirate movie ever, with Charlton Heston and Christian Bale, will be released on Sept 27, 2011. I have already pre-ordered my copy through Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Treasure-Island-Charlton-Heston/dp/B0057FGCR8/ref=sr_1_4?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1309549151&sr=1-4 What's more, I should get mine in time for me Oct 23 cruise...save it to watch on the Byg Bus going to Baltimore The rejoicing may now begin.

I have the modest goal of seeing and reviewing every pirate movie ever made. I will try to post one review a month. I will start by reviewing as many versions of Treasure Island as I can.

Rosarita Montoya wrote: Silkie, you're outed, hon! But fess up, all you lasses (and some of you lads) ... I know you can't resist those trashy novels with the bare-chested, patch-eyed hero on the cover, the wind blowing through his raven locks and his silken sails. Yes, who wouldn't be tempted by that genre of 'literature' that I like to affectionately call -- 'Pirate Porn'! Now, I've got a stack of these waiting for me at my summer retreat, but I'm always eager to hear of more such literary masterpieces. So, what are your favourite Pirate Porn novels? I'll start: Um... 17th century ... England ... blue? .... fun read ... quite hot. 18th century? ... New …

Okay... Someone said "Swashbucklers" was the worst pirate movie ever. But what would you say the best pirate movie is? I would argue the best pirate movie would have to be just like any other great movie--one you can watch over and over again. Where people who don't necessarily give a crap about pirates can view it openly and objectively, and still walk away feeling it's a great movie. I don't necessarily want to jump on the "Pirates of the Carribbean" bandwagon, but I would say it's the best pirate movie. It's well-made. Exciting. Good acting. Plus, the "cheez" factor is minimum, considering it's a Disney movie and based on a theme-park ride. Are there are ot…

(oops! sorry about the spelling error!) The first one was "amusing", but I thought the second was a little tiresome. I am probably alone in thinking this, but Jacks antics were "fresh" in the first movie, but, now familiar with his character, they felt "overplayed" in the second edition. I had no problem suspending my disbelief and went into it with an open mind too. I don't think Disney will trick me a third time though.... Anyone else? GoF

I got a sneak viewing of the movie last night. It was good. better then 2 and 3. It drug on a little long and they butchered Blackbeard...Ian McShane did fine but they should have stayed away from the historical pirate...Even the flag was wrong. All in all the movie was fun. Go see it. Have a blast. IMHO the first 20 mins in London were the best. I for one am already looking for a Mermaid to call my own!

"The Princess Bride" was recently mentioned in the Pirate Film thread, and as a novice student of fencing, this got me wundrin' - What other movies have truly remarkable fencing scenes? I've heard rumor that the French film "Le Viol du Vampire" actually has a semi-nude fencing scene, which must be quite the sight, but I've yet to confirm the rumor for m'self. So what are other contenders might anyone for greatest fencing scene?

Not sure if this should be here or not. Oh, well. Kept forgetting to post this. I enjoy watching Ghost Hunters on Sci Fi channel Wednesday nights and this past week's episode was the group of TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) out in California where they did a Paranormal Investigation on the ferry Berkeley and then the Star of India. I have to say, it was an awesome episode! They didn't catch much but a couple disembodied voice apparisions and a possible movement they believed was NOT caused by the movement of the ship. I've heard of stories of the Star of India being haunted. Apparently, those of TAPS believe it, too. T'was some good stuff they found. Anyone…

Some franchises just don’t know when to quit. Whether or not people are getting sick and tired of the whole Pirates of the Caribbean thing, when a franchise makes that much money, it’s hard to let it die. We’ve been hearing rumblings about a possible fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie for months now, but tonight I got an email from the old friend of the site which not only confirmed a fourth movie will almost certainly be happening, but dropped details on where the series may end up going when it continues. Our source says that Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is no longer just a possibility, it’s almost a certainty. More importantly, Johnny Depp is all but assured to retur…

Ahoy, Matey! it be September 19th and it be Talk Like a Pirate Day. Savvy! Go get yer fancy costume, feel yer blisterin’ stubble, take that tobacco pipe from yonder treasure chest, 'n start using pirate phrases. The remaining post is in me blog but its enough to make a point here . I thought we could celebrate this day with sharing the best pirate phrases you can find. My personal favorite is Jack Sparrow's line from the 2nd POTC movie. He goes, 'making the pleasure of your carbuncle' when he meets Turner in the ship. So let's see what we gather and may the best pirate win the honor of being the smoothest talker.

Just finished viewing said movie and after all I've heard and read about it, I didn't think it was all that bad. If ya take POTC out of the mix, which all Pirate movies will be compared to, I would say it faired well. It took awhile to get used to Genna as a pirate, I kept thinking about "Stewart Little", but I finally bought it along with Modine as the swashbuckling scoundrel. Anyhow, that be my take on it!

With the two POC films so far, the splash is a typhoon of blow-them-away spectacle, spitting on …

I think we all have a favorite "Bad" movie, don't we? But what makes a "Bad" movie bad? That's hard to define. Some bad movies have bad actors and acting, some have good actors and bad stories, and some movies are just bad overall. One good measure of a "Bad" movie is to look for cheesy effects and/or sets (which Frank Zappa referred to as "Cheepnis"). Here are some of my favorite "So Bad They're Good" movies: Yellowbeard - this might have been a different movie if Marty Feldman hadn't died halfway through filming. Still a lot of fun. As the tagline says "A rollicking yarn for the young in the head." Godzilla Movies - except for the first one in Japanese. The rest are …

So many ideas so little time! Steampunk is such a fertile ground for fresh ideas, fun projects...but too often, I just procrastinate over and over again. But here's a couple example of stuff I would really like to make: - a steampunk tin-can banjo. This one I hope I will do but I have already other intrusment waiting to be build/refirbish, a small hurdy-gurdy, a medieval gittern, a cigar box guitar... - a steampunk melodica or small button accordeon. If I found a nice toy accordeon, I will probably buy it just in case one day I found the time for... - a steampunk moped. You know the old european style ones with pedals. I would like to convert it to electric and make i…

I can't believe ANYONE would go for this! They're selling what's suppost to be Geoffrey's Barbossa hat. 1) there's not as many bulletholes, only one and Barbossa's in the movie had more. 2) IT'S GREY i don't buy it..it's not even like it..i'm shure! Barbossas/Geoffrey's hat was black, i have many daytime pics and it's black as can be. I think it's a sham. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...ssPageName=WDVW
