So I was reading this book called Pirates! (it might have been by Angus Constam, I don't remember nor care) and I was looking at many of the images in their painted by one Howard Pyle, who I have been invoking as responsible for the pirate/boot misconception in modern times, and I noticed that the buccaneers who Sacked Cartegena wore shoes. Not boots, but shoes! So I looked for some other images of Mr. Pyle's. And look! Here, the cover of The Books of Pirates: shoes! And here, in "Marooned": shoes! And here, in this sketch: shoes! And in "How the Treasure was Divided": shoes! And here depicting Thomas Tew: shoes! In fact, there are more shoes, but I co…

Mike Leach has become a symbol of the pirate mystique down here in Texas. His cover photo for the September 2009 "Texas Monthly" featured him sporting an eyepatch and included a piratey quote he gave about pirates beating soldiers. Well, he got canned today after a whirlwind disaster involving an injured player. The facts are flying, along with the fur, and we'll have to see where this ends (Leach and his lawyer are talking lawsuit) but, in the end, at least in Texas, pirates take another hit. I can hear the jokes now - "Well, doctors are now saying that instead of requiring the player to sit out practice in the 'offensive garage' that Leach should have make him walk …

With the new Faire Magazine (http://www.fairemagazine.com) taking off faster and with more steam behind it that we had at the beginning of The Pyrates Way, I'm afraid that I'll be forced to put more of my efforts into the new magazine sooner than expected. This means I've had to cut back on several of the pyrate faires/festivals that we planned on visiting during the third quarter of the year. Several big ideas for next year have been put on hold and the biggest personal upset is that I've resigned from the board of directors of PyrateCon2009. The Pyrates Way will still support PyrateCon in any way possible, but I just can't devote the amount of time required and it …

This one is Marie-Antoinette, starring Kristen Dunst. It is based on Antonia Fraser's biography (if you haven't read any of her works, you might do so. This movie is to be released in the Fall of this year. It actually looks pretty damn good. Here is the site where you can see the trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_picture...nette/high.html

I have good news for Captain Hook fans. There is another prequel to Peter Pan coming out, and it has nothing to do with Peter and the Starcatchers. This one is simply called Capt. Hook, so I'm sure everyone can figure out who the (anti)hero of the story is. It was written by J. V. Hart and illustrated by Brett Helquist. I just finished an advance reader's edition of the book (it goes on sale in August) and I have to say that I liked it better than Harry Potter. It starts with a fifteen-year-old James entering Eton and then shows everything that leads him to becoming a pirate. If anyone wants to know more, I will be happy to provide details with as few spoilers as …

Ok get those TIVO's ready...now's yer chance to see Bob Hope as a pirate in the The Princess & The Pirate on TCM tonight, followed by Abbott & Costello meet Captain Kidd at 12:30, which I've been dying to see. Charles Laughton reprises his role as Kidd from the first Kidd movie he did, which was great the first time around. Can't wait to see how he hams it up with the guys.

hi! im a newbie on this forum, but i absolutley adore pirates! as soon as i found this site i was immediately praising the pirate gods for guiding me to his most wonderful community! To get to the point, other than the great point i made about how great a forum this is, im looking for any advice i can get about putting on a pirate skit or writing a humourous, originl song about pirates! the reason i am doing this is because my school is holding a fun day and a competition where students can perform something in front of the rest of the school and they vote for the best act...myself and two of my male friends love pirates so much, that we want to share that love with the…

Any good pirate MUDS? I've been out of the MUD addict loop for some time and my brother is interested in a pirate version. I showed him Pirate Wars 2, but he was looking for a proper one. BTW, like Bilgemunky said, check it out! Fun so far, and the upgrades are a laugh riot! Drake

(oops! sorry about the spelling error!) The first one was "amusing", but I thought the second was a little tiresome. I am probably alone in thinking this, but Jacks antics were "fresh" in the first movie, but, now familiar with his character, they felt "overplayed" in the second edition. I had no problem suspending my disbelief and went into it with an open mind too. I don't think Disney will trick me a third time though.... Anyone else? GoF

There's been references to him in various posts over the years, but I'm trying to get a head count of sorts. But there's got to be more than a few fans of POB around here. Anyone else read all 20 (or 20.5, for completists) novels in the Aubrey/Maturin series? I'm on my second trip through, currently just starting "Treason's Harbor" And for you unfortunate folks who have never heard of Patrick O'Brian, he is best known for the film "Master and Commander" which was based on his 10th book in the series, "The Far Side of the World." His writing style is often compared to Jane Austen. He creates a very complete sense of life aboard a Royal Navy ship during the Napoleon…

I probably should have searched the archives but for this first but, too late I already hit the new post button. I was in the computer games section of my BX/PX and saw several Pirate themed PC games.... before I take the plunge, does anyone have a game they reccomend? They had Tropico, Port Royale, Pirate Hunter and maybe a few more. All in the $18 range. Suggestions?

Anyone out there building these gems? I'm a rather novice at the hobby, having build only two, the San Francisco, a galleon and the CSS Alabama, a rather famous confederate war ship. I am at present building the Mayflower and my goal is to finally build the USS Constitution. However, the price of this model keeps going up and up and is now well over $350. Anyway, the wench wants me to build the Black Falcon, a pirate ship, but I'd rather build Drake's Golden Hind.

Wanted to send this as a Xmas gift to a Kidd fan - read a review that wasn't too favorable, but I think the person has a personal ax to grind against Barry Clifford. The discovery crew are on the defense on that review http://www.whydah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29 - finding buried treasure ain't all so glorious I guess....so I was wondering what you'all thought before I drop some hard won loot on this booty.
