Fair winds do blow my way! I have been contracted by Carthage College to design and teach a course--"Pirates: Facts and Fictions" for their January term. This will be working with material from my doctoral dissertation, but goes beyond those narrow confines even to the point of exploring films! Yarr! I have some ideas for the course and I will definitely be using films to explore the mythology of pirates, a transformation that even contemporary histories were already working to engender. We will be reading Esquemelin's "History of the Buccaneers of America" and portions of Defoe/Johnson's "General History of the Pyrates" so they can get a feel of the "reality" of p…

ARRR!!! What be the name of the pirate movie that Sloth and Chunk are watching on TV during the film "The Goonies"? I always wanted to know, but I never bothered to find out. It's an old black and white film, and there's a guy swinging from the mast. It inspires them to chant "Hey you guys!" Is it even a pirate film?

I know someone mentioned this cartoon on another thread with many follow up responses. I thought I would start a topic header here for this crazy cartoon, that the creator states is not pirates but sailors but includes pirates. It is such a fun and crazy cartoon. Flapjack Creator

I just caught this flick last night. I didn't think it was too bad of a mystery movie. There were a couple of corny bits at the end, but Johnny did a good job of protraying the character. I know this movie is old, but just saw it for the first time. I was wondering what others thought and what other Johnny Depp movie's they liked.

"The Pirate Code" a National Geographic Channel two hour documentary on the 'Whydah' airs tonight at 8:00 pm EST. "Salvage expert Barry Clifford attempts to recover the treasures of Black Sam Bellamy's flagship, the Whydah, the first authenticated pirate ship in U.S. waters." I plan to watch it, and hope others can also see it and comment about the content, insights, etc. gleaned from the production. Also, if you know what the 're-broadcast' schedule might be, please post that too, for those who might miss it the first time.

Recently received a copy of "Treasure Island" with Charlton Heston, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie, which was released in 1990 under Turner Home Entertainment, is only available in VHS. It was produced by Agamemnon Films in association with British Lion. Information on the movie and cast can be found on IMDB.com- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100813/ The movie is slow at times; it was a made-for-TV flick and not a threatrical release (did I mention it's faithful to the book?). The attention to detail in the clothes is pretty good. These are the nastiest looking pirates I've seen on the tube since POTC. Overall, if you're lucky enough to find a copy, ge…

...A game piece! Okay, now I can share it.... Some of you may remember when the Original POTC came out; Ted and Terry honored me by naming the island that Jack was marooned on as *Black Sam's Spit*. I have been informed officially that next year, when the final, updated POTC Monopoly game comes out.... *Black Sam's Spit* will be where New York Avenue would be. : ) I get a whole 15 seconds fame! Ahoy Shipmates, I recently received my 2006 Pirate calendar in the mail, with art-work by Don Maitz...It's awesome! Images of Blackbeard, Henry Morgan, Black Sam Bellamy's crew capturing the WYDAH, etc. Each month even has historically significant dates in pyrattical history. (For example, July 19 has the following entry: "1721- Black Bart's former quartermaster, Walter Kennedy, is hanged at Execution Dock in Wapping after being identified as a pirate by a former shipmate.") I heartily recommend it. If you'd like one, you can order it here: http://www.tide-mark.com/pirates.html Your Shipmate, Chad Teasley Ship's Gunner

The Real Pirates of the Caribbean. Airs on Friday, December 16 at 4:00am ET There may not have been ghost ships laden with cursed sailors, but the Caribbean was indeed once full of Pirates. In this exciting hour we bring you four stories of real pirates that once wreaked havoc on the Caribbean and beyond. We'll introduce Captain Kidd who plundered his way to the end of a noose and Black Beard, quite possibly the most famous pirate of all time. We'll look at Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two female pirates who became friends and shipmates, and we'll also highlight Sir Henry Morgan, one of the few pirates actually to have been knighted. Go go underwater to discover the remain…
