Tonight I was able to see a screening of the new STARZ TV series “Black Sails”. I’ve been eagerly watching the trailers on facebook and through a twist of luck I managed to see the pilot episode in a theater on the big screen! My first impressions: This series requires “thinking” as it weaves a tale of intrigue. With a director behind it like Michael Bay you know you’re going to see some explosions (and you do!) but the detailed backstory and sub plots might be a bit much for your average viewer. Not as much action as you come to expect from Michael Bay but this isn’t a bad thing as the pilot sets up the characters and lets you know a lot has yet to be revealed. T…

I have the modest goal of seeing and reviewing every pirate movie ever made. I will try to post one review a month. I will start by reviewing as many versions of Treasure Island as I can.

Hello! Apparently the Smithsonian Channel recently had a factual program on pirates. Did anyone see this and could you tell me if it was as factual as they claim it is? Thank you!

Recently while sailing the Netflix shores I discovered a few interesting streaming films that have a pirate theme or similar adventure styled tales. I though perhaps the Pub members could share Netflix gems they have found streaming? We can even share documentaries and historical features. I found the following: Treasure Island 1999 (with Jack Palance as Long John Silver) Treasure Island 2012 (with Eddie Izzard as Long John Silver and Elijah Wood as Ben Gunn) Treasure Planet, Disney's animated science fantasy version of the classic story. Rob Roy Plunkett and MacLeane

The 2012 inductees to the International Pirate's Hall of Fame have been announced. Three very worth pirates have been added to the hall of fame, including someone who should be a very familiar face, at least if you've been to Florida. Some of this year's nominees should also be known to you, including Mission, Cascabel and Scarlett Jai. Check out the inductees at http://www.internationalpirates.com. Nominations for 2013 Hall of Famers is open. If you know a worthy pirate who fits the criteria, send in a nomination. - Hurricane

Recently , Eye held an event that originally was going to be called "Buccaneers Bowling for Boobies" But alas that did not go over so well with the Charity "Busted Foundation" as they already had a group named "Bowling for Boobies" and so It was named "Buccaneer Bowling" Eye have attended alot of Charities over the years but this is the first one eye held on my own.. My intention now is to get other Leviathan members involved in putting on the same event in other cities simultaneously next year. We can make a bigger impact in fund raising that way and possibly start a national competition between Buccaneer bowling teams. Also eye plan on writing a one page article for M…

I am happy to report that the game Pirates Of The Burning Sea is under new management. The game is leaving Sony Online Entertainment and Flying lab Software, and being managed now by Portalus Games, ( www.http://portalusgames.com/ ) which has been put together by three original developers of POTBS. I regard Pirates Of The Burning Sea as being one of the best player vs. player systems which celebrate the Golden Age Of Piracy. There are a number of anachronisms and fantasy features - (is a voodoo reference a fantasy feature, really?) but the opportunity to go broadside to broadside in annaval actions involving 2 to 48 live players in a single instance if for me just t…

Ahoy! I am a Huge fan of board games. My favorite being Settlers of Catan. I own many copies of the game but they all have one major flaw; Durability. The tiles and cards are all made out of cardboard which tends to bend or warp over time. I am working on making a copy of the game out of sealed wood this way they are stronger and more resistant to water damage. I've decided that while I'm at it I'm going to tailor the game to my interests and make a Pirates of Catan. The issue I'm having is with the actual game pieces. In Settlers of Catan the players work with 2 types of pieces: Settlements and Cities. I'd like to do something along the lines of Ship and Hideou…

I am trying to figure out something about this image - who drew it, when it was drawn, what it's called or anything to help figure where it's from. It's all over Zazzle - suggesting to me that it's a public use image - where they explain that it's a "Vintage illustration black and white pirate fairy tale story image with pirates drinking and carousing on the deck of their pirate ship." A pirate fairy tale story? Anyone?

This past weekend I watched a Master piece theater version of "Frenchman's Creek" from the late 90's. I really enjoyed the DVD. Purchased it from Amazon for under $15.00 USD. I don't know how period the costuming is but it looked wonderful! Considering reading the novel having seen the movie.

Since I am working on a list myself, I figure you all might have some ideas as well. I know some of us will have a CD with "pirate music" on it to listen to on the way to a show site or what-have-you, but taking that idea a bit further,....the question is what movies would you put on a list for something to watch before a show [like maybe the two days preceding it] to get in to that right mindset? Now this does not necessarily mean the best portrayals or costuming or anything like that,....but what movies give you the right "vibe" or "feeling" to put you mind in the right space to play a pirate?

The Thunderbuss MK IV I started on another ray-gun, the “Thunderbuss MK IV.” I figured that people would be interested in seeing how I put it all together, so I will be taking pictures of the process step by step. I can only play with it occasionally, so it might be awhile between post. When I start a project like this, I really don't know how it's all going to fit together... I just kind of play with everything and see what fits together the best. I do want to rig it with lights that turn on when I hold the pistol grip (I'm thinking of making a switch that is an extension of the trigger guard). I also want a laser and a piezoelectric buzzer that will activate when the …
