By favorite books, I mean the ones you keep as eye candy, or for reference on different techniques and methods. Or even ones that inspire you, which might be something other than a book strictly on art. You might also mention if the book is still in print. So post your favs. I'll start. I believe all of these are still in print. Anything by Nick Bantock, but especially the Griffin and Sabine series, or The Venetians Wife. Artists' Journals & Sketchbooks by Lynne Perrella - Soft cover. al.pha.bet.i.ca An A-Z Creativity Guide for Collage and Book Artists by Lynne Perrella - Soft cover. The last two books have great eye candy, but also great tips on techniqu…

Several folks have pm'ed me with observations, comments and issues. 1) Members are not receiving books until well after the first of the month, (and I don't mean the second week of that month, more like the last week.) 2) Members are not receiving books for a certain month, and then getting two books to be done or the next mailing. 3) Questions about the amount of work in each book 4) Communication among members about time frames While this is not a rant, it is simple genteel reminders about the articles you signed before heaving aboard. I understand that life sometimes gets in the way with all of us having careers, families, and other hobbies. Especially aroun…

So here's a little reproduction map that I've been working on for a couple of days. Certainly not the nicest one I've drawn but all in all I think it turned out well. It's 16"x21" on laid paper. The map is completey hand plotted, drawn, and inked with one of the main ou of period details being that I used pens with waterfast ink to prevent smudging should the map get wet. Comments and Crtisicm are welcome. Between Duchess's thread here and conversations with Mary Diamond & Willaim Brand, I think we need to do a group block print on canvas project... Now that I'm obsessed by the topic, I ordered some Ornamental art design books from Dover.

Thought it would be nice to have a thread where we could all share tips, finds, and, like in the title, accidents that turned out to be kinda kewl. In the sketchbook thread, Patrick described how he saw the reflection of leaves on a cloth, digi-photoed it, then turned it into paper for a Mother's Day card. I mentioned how I scan my favorite scrapbook papers, so I can use them over and over again. This works really well for papers that have a design on both sides. Actually, I scan all kinds of things to use in my artwork. For example, pages from calenders that have old maps on them, or astronomical charts, and all four sides of an old Chinese tea tin, among many others.…

I had this idea after seeing a cold cast bronze bottle that looked like one of davy jones' crew member would have possessed. I will be making these a regular item to sell once I have the time.

I'm heading off to the final weekend of my localish renaissance festival tomorrow. I entirely failed at any plans for new garb despite my carefully laid plans. So this evening I've been digging through my bins to cobble something together from things I made nearly two decades ago. A small leather folder contained this note and some handmade goods from one of our departed friends and I find it is suddenly a maudlin evening here abouts.

Tis an idea here, mates... having a Pub Yearbook with pics of us at events of that year, etc.. just like a class yearbook. another idea is like the pen pal booklets where you make a tiny booklet with your current name and addy on it, then send it off to a friend and they will send it to someone else, etc. Eventually you will get it back with various people to write to. But instead of writing to them, have them paste a pic or scrapbook a page of themselves as a pirate or whatever. They could write something, too, I guess. But the yearbook... would be fun! Cost? Well... I suppose I could check into it. :) ~Lady B

I've been working on a complicated process of designing and 3D printing relief plates. Then using the plates those to create the basis of 1/1 editions with a common printed element. The common element here is ,very loosely, a 16th century caravel.

Couple 'o years back I started trackin' down me ancestors. Had always heard me Grammaw sayin' we was Scottish, Irish and native Indian. Well... found Scottish, English, Cherokee and a large portion from the Netherlands/Bavaria. Not an Irishman to be found. Usin' the tools provided by Wikitree and Ancestry I's been able to dig up several stories of piratical interest. The earliest occurs in 1499 when Breton Pirate Colyn Dolphin ransoms a Sir Harry Stradling for 1 or 2 thousand marks (depending on the source). Sir Harry is 17 degrees away so It's just an interesting tale. Fast forward to the mid 1600's and the Scottish/English ancestors are gettin' deported and leavin' the…

Surfin' the web a'while back and I runned across a feller who's facebook page is dedicated to OLD techniques and processes fer just about everything. Foods , building supplies, makin' bells, stonework, horn, hammerin' out gold leaf, makin saddles outta grass and the like. The videos are kinda longish and the translations from various languages is odd at times. Yer skills WILL be enriched by wotchin' this character. T'ain't necessarily pirate arts, just the way things was/is done by hand me down knowledge. www.facebook.com/eugeniomonesmalosttrades/

Hello! I’m Duchess. I’m your Arts of Pyracy Moderator. I spent my childhood summers working with my mom at one of the largest renaissance festivals in the country. I worked there again as an adult for almost a decade. I’ve been involved in a variety of historic, theater and arts related endeavors for much of my life, but stepped away from performing about 15 years ago. I still have most of my gear, living in totes in my small house. It might be angling for a come back or a side step, I don't know yet. I am a physicist by training, an inveterate and intemperate learner of skills by nature, nurture and inclination. I’m thrilled to see the Pub return, hav…
