Hurricane The ashen waves, they roar and dip, Like lions they pounce in rushes. They seek the lives of my crew and my ship, But it’s my soul that the leaden sky crushes. The sails were tattered hours ago And I’ve lashed myself to the wheel. I’ll see this day through or I’ll “go below” If the devil can’t hold its seal. My ship flies wild at a horrible rate; The wind screams a terrible din. I’m riding the current and chasing my fate: Will I ever see the sun again? Stephen Sanders ©2010

Once ‘pon a time, a silly way to start. But how else to tell a tale from my heart? It be ‘bout love, ‘tween a man and a lass Whose body would tempt a priest giving mass This tale does not start with help from above To tell you the truth, it starts in a pub Sailor were drinkin’, as they’re want to do Others be eating Salmagundi Stew. Now sailors get loose-lipped, when they get drunk Talkin’ ‘bout ships that could use a good dunk And on this dark night a king learned o’ one It would set sail ‘pon the rise of the sun Why would a king be ‘round scoundrels like these? Well he was a pyrate, King of the Seas He was quite rugged, wore no silk or lace And he be know…

With Halloween approaching I thought it would be a dandy time to post one of my poems from my new book. It's about Halloween...and a pirate! Surrender the Sweets! I’m a thieving little sea dog, the meanest ever born, and I demand that you surrender your stash of candy corn! I’ll also snatch your Cracker Jack, your popcorn balls as well, take away each taffy and creamy caramel. I’ll confiscate your crunch bars and force you to give up your licorice, your lollipops and peanut butter cups. I’ll make off with your Milk Duds, your bubble gum cigars, and last I’ll hijack happily your hoard of Hershey bars. You can keep the apples and all that healt…

THEE KNOT Just a young lad when me be signin' on, they be givin' me a knot me could not see. Now an old Captain still sailin' thee seas an' many a good mate has died under me. A Pirates life it be thee life fer me, they all be shoutin' with glee. Not knowin' thee doorway ta' hell be opened upon thee rollin' sea. Wenches an' rum, bloody cutlass an' plunder, thee roar of big guns all be pleasure fer me. Fearless with abandon we be livin' thee good life till fate be comin' our way. In thee end thar' be no glory in death, fer being murderin' scum they be thinkin' we be. Stretchin' our necks ta' get our last breath swingin' high up in thee breeze. When a young la…

THE PIRATE AND THE MERMAID The surf thundered as the longboat came ashore its hull grinding to a halt on the sandy beach. A lone man steps into the water. His eyes have a steely glint and his face is lined grim with determination. It is dark with thick fog rolling along the shore. Wind gusts whipped up the sand stinging his face as he walks. What was driving this Pirate? What is he searching for? Haunted by a song he had heard once while sailing in pristine green waters. Ever since that day it was all he could think of. His soul consumed with desire! Suddenly a ray of light from the heavens clears the dark fog showing him the way. He can see her sitting on …

Treasured Melody Climbing out on the quarterdeck, I’d spent the night tallying gold. We’d taken a brig off Maracaibo And her treasure now lays in our hold. The sun’s just topping the horizon, The color of burnished copper in the air, In my mind, I immediately see your visage, ‘Cause the whole sky is the color of your hair. Last night, I logged pearls set among rubies And jade nuggets of various size, But your smile makes the pearls look washed out And the jade cannot compare with your eyes. We’d taken nutmeg and pepper and sugar But your love is all the spice I’ll ever need. We captured silks that I can’t wait to strip off you, So I order on more canvas fo…

The cold front I can feel coming on the window's smooth surface. A cool wind blows against it and I can almost sense it... a windswept field of the mind so free of distractions. No positive or negative distractions. No flowers, grass, weeds, birds learning to fly above the zenith of the sky. An oxymoron, there is no zenith to the sky just as there is no end to the capacity of the mind. No limits for the expanding of our thoughts or perception. Past the barrier one still feels the wind and the cool air chilling their skin. Anticipation maybe, memory also. The memory of a sense feels as real as the sense itself. One wonders if the barrier is real at all…

God Take the King! Ye ask me why I sail the seas beneath a flag stained black, And why I risk both life and limb and take the pirate tack? The answer is an easy one, a song I love to sing, After years of bloody taxes, I have come to hate the king! Chorus: Huzzah! Huzzah! It’s a new song I sing! Give me rum, freedom and buckets of gold and God Take the King! I bear the marks upon me back of scratches from his cat: Too many times I’ve come up short when ‘is Majesty passed the hat. At pike point he collects me pay before it can be spent On niceties like milk or shoes or even to pay the rent. Chorus My Maggie she died coughin’ after a winter without a…

Xavier Quinn He seems no higher than a grown man's shin And with malicious grin, he has great pride in… Tracking down those who pillage, plunder, and relish in sin! Chances are slim, you'd escape from him! East India Company's best man. Some say he's more like the devil's own right hand. The Isles of Caiman to the ports of Japan, He is known by every pirate and courtesan! A seemingly decent gent, who's speech is most eloquent . 'Tis hard to believe he is so hell bent, But one look, and it becomes quite evident. That he desires to rid the world of every malcontent! Known to bring down men twice his size, with the blaze of Hades in his eyes. When he does "deal" w…

The cold, dark waves splash hard On the rock teeth of the shore. The cold, harsh tide rolls in And the wind blows cold like before. Over the graves of sailors, the Harsh ocean's mouth's white foam Reaches with cold, foamy fingers Reaching towards harbor-town homes. The song of the sea sings sweetly Below- luring the young lads so brave Out to the cruel wide ocean- Out onto the hungry, cold waves. Away from the home of his father Away from his mother's warm arms Away from the home he grew up in To a strange world of danger and harm. The boy now dreams often of England and home And of his pretty young lass But the sky grows dark and the wind picks up An…

I. He cut a dashing figure on deck Resembling a dagger to the neck. Misty gray-blue, his glare Only the sea can compare. Hair, dark and soft as raven’s wing This, self proclaimed, “Pirate King!” “Jonathan Hawks belongs in the stocks Jonathan Hawks will lose more than his locks!” II. He sails not for fame or lady’s pleasure He is purely an adventure. Seeking that which was lost, No matter what the cost. Life or limb Is all the same to him. “Jonathan Hawks belongs in the stocks Jonathan Hawks will lose more than his locks!” ©2005 Shana L. This was sent to me by a friend who wrote this years ago. It was too good to keep to myself and with her permission, I am posting it here to share with you. ©2011 by Denise Andrew Medley. All Rights Reserved. DAMSEL ME AND PIRATE YOU Not unless you take the wheel Could you know or could you feel The boldest man I ever knew... Damsel me and pirate you A sailor on his brutal quest Pillage souls and plunder flesh A bleeding heart is his tattoo.... Mutiny a clash of words, like stubborn wills, on this staggering, rainy day, once more a call for aid, arrangements sought, and the static beckoning of an s.o.s remains ignored. battered by the ongoing storm, of which nature is unaccountable, the crew sifts lazily through the wreckage that we once held as a haven or home. low be the insidious dogs that would own to such treachery, blindsided and hoodwinked by one of their salty own, seems talk holds no weight amongst pirates, and why an oath or promise must be bound in blood, not for the sake of birthing or sealing a pact, but more as a taste of what can be taken, should ye betray or fail.

Abandon Ship! While running away from me and back to you, Down to the shores of a deep, blue sea, I saw a fleet of ships on the horizon And fell in love with a life of piracy. How could I say no to the pursuit of shineys, the throes of battle, or consumption of rum? Well, maybe the latter wouldn't fit right with me, But swill and grog works just right for some... Havoc wreaking ne'er-do-wells kept me company, As we pillaged and plundered each isle, Though I must confess this one small thing, Your bloody memory haunted me all the while.. It was early morning when the storm crept up on us, With an armada closing in from behind, It wasn't til Cannons were blaz…

Here Be Pirates When dawn approached, I took to this vessel, A stowaway amongst The damned and martyrs alike, Swept up with the undertow, I set off on my journey, Through uncharted waters Of a raging sea... With the erosion of time, As the decadence wore away, Scallywags and traitors, We've all become, Mercenaries and thieves, Assuming each others disguise, Cut down and internally raped With the lot of them, This torrent of madness Was drowning me, Seabound with seablood, we were, Tortured and revered for our crimes, Beneath blackened skies, I could sometimes hear a distant wailing, A ghost of a memory Left somewhere behind... 'Neath midday sun, …

Ahoy there me buckos! I've just started trying my hand at the seafaring life and started me own pirate band. We've called Captain Hellfire and The Wretched Brethren and we've just had our second gig on the 25th of January. I thought I'd share some of the lyrics I've written. This first set of lyrics be from a song about that most famous pirate, Black Barty, I play this by meself on the piano at the moment but we are looking to develop it as a track incorporating the whole band. Black Bartholomew Roberts (Seas of Chance) In darkness we all swing together Each man but skin and bone Packed inside this floating coffin We sail the seas as one I'm staring at the ceiling …

The End The sun has risen, the sun has set Their gallant deeds we shant forget The final king has gone at last The sand has fallen from the glass On Guinea's sweltering Coast The last king of the sea has gone to hell to roast He was the best of the Best, But now he's gone to rejoin the Rest Black bart, was the last of his breed Who on the trade of nations did feed He was the very last to fall But before he did, he acheived it all he looted and stole, just like his mates But after four years, now he shares their fate Now, like them, he rests below Down to Jones they all did go The last pirate has died, tis true Rejoined in the Locker by me and you The Go…

The Pirate’s Prayer We sailed from ol’England on a bright summer day, Seeking fame and a boatload of gold. With cannon and powder and a letter from the King, We flew our brave ensign so bold! Through storms and hunger and a wide, empty sea, We thirsted after swag on the foam. But the days turned to weeks and all I could pray Was, dear God, just let me get home! Oh, God just let me get home! Oh, God just let me get home! Just let me get back to me wife and me babes And I swear no more will I roam! And then came the day that we sighted a sail, And the captain he promised a fight! The drum beat, me heart raced, the wind drove us on And we chased that tall sa…

The Gentleman Pirate By: Christina Carr I began my days, in the courts Structure and control, my only resort I wore the clothing they told me to wear I held a status none could compare Then you, dear uncle, destroyed my life Took away my strength, status and rights My parents gone I had only you And I truly thought you'd see me through I gave you love, as much as I could In trade you'd support me, like you should But no, it was never meant to be That loved noble inside of me You tried to kill me and beat me down You made sure I would not be around And just as you thought you had won Your back was turned, your deeds undone Your problem is,…
