So as I have stated before on this pub my husband and I recently bought our first sailboat. It took us about two months of hassling with the guy who sold it to us to get the title and registration from him, and so when the legal stuff was finally taken care of we were anxious to get her on the water. Neither of us have much sailing experience. We have taken a couple classes, but that it is. A lack of patience will most likely be our downfall. So we get her ready and take her out on a nearby lake that doesn't have much traffic. Well the moment she touches the water the wind picks up. It's blowing pretty hard all of the sudden and we decide to end back to the dock to…

Does anyone here have any insight for travel in Ireland. I am thinking of flying into Heathrow and renting a car for a couple of weeks to make way through northern England and all of Ireland. I want to see castles and pubs, but not really into battlefields. Have any of you been there or planning a trip there? Let's share notes~

I am leaving for Australia July 1 and the response I typically get when I tell people this is, "I've always wanted to go there!" or "I plan to go to Australia some day." It would seem there're places like Australia that a lot of people would like to go. Here's some that have been on my short list for quite awhile: -Scotland -Serengeti -Madagascar -Brazil -South Pacific Islands Nearly all of these places are the results of my readings - particularly from books by Gregory McDonald. (I found Key West through his writings.) What's on your short list?

I just returned from a week (my second trip) to Malta. I was there for a week two years ago. The trip was a deeply emotional one, and I left part of my soul there. I cannot recommend highly enough spending time there, but be warned: it is not cheap. There is so much to say, I do not know where to begin. I wanted to start this new thread to post some of my anecdotes, stories, experiences, pirate/corsair information, etc. The highlights of this recent trip were visits to the oldest man-made standing structures on the planet (1,000 years older than the pyramids!), a cruise on the Mediterranean aboard a 100-foot wooden gullet, a tour through the Inquisitor's Palace..…

Since some of us have had the pleasure of crewing on this beautiful ship (and firing cannons at landlubbers from her deck), I'm starting a topic so that those of us who have been sailing on her can talk about the experience and share photos. She has been built over the past thirty-five years by Hayden Brown. He built most of her himself (although he admits that he had to buy the lines, sails and engine.) I've had the pleasure of being part of her crew for the past five years, including taking part in multi-day, off-shore sails.

So I have this opportunity to go to Manila and do some history snooping through a most bizarre set of circumstances that came about this week. For those of you who don't want to read the intrigue and adventure (so to speak) of how this came about, I am looking for info on what might be interesting in the GAoP sense in Manila. For those of you who like a yarn, settle back in your easy chair. I read this newspaper called Investor's Business Daily that has a page called "Leader's and Success" every day. On Monday last, they had an article about a spy in the WWII named Claire Phillips. Manila was a location where we got our behinds handed to us; it's right near the site of …

I just purchased a Fortune 30 cutter here in Alaska (30' LOD, 33' 6" LOA, 10' 4" Beam, 4' Draft). She's a pretty little fiberglass cruising boat with a seperate aft cabin. I love the look of wood, but in this climate, it's a pain and very costly to maintain. So, I settled on a fiberglass hull with classic looking lines. To me, she looks a little like a coastal or fishing sloop from the early 1800s. But with the added safety of a 20hp inboard. Currently, her name is Pacific High 1, but I'm looking to change that to Sanctioned Mistress. Yes, I know it's supposedly bad luck to change a boat name, but Pacific High just doesn't suit me. I'm a good enough sailor to deal…

I already have a bar in my basement, but it's not piratical enough for me. Everyone else seems to be impressed, but a few bits of swag and some seashells aren't nearly enough for me. I'm thinkin bout rebuilding the bar and laminating some jewels, piece's o' eight and various other baubles to the top, and I have a couple other ideas in progress. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, I'm tryin to think of how to make a piratical beer pong table Any bits of inspiration will be most appreciated!

In the category of 'huh...whaddya know?": I'm sure that there are some of you that would automatically think of this gentleman when thinking of Sleepy Hollow and Pirates: And by my ignorance, when I responded to someone's post regarding ghost tales and headless horsemen in another thread, little did I know the connection to a particular pillar of the community by the name of Lord Frederick Philipse, who happened to be New York's wealthiest merchant . Most books label him as a pirate broker. Look up Frederick Philipse (Phillips) in most pirate history books and he's in it. In short, he was basically a pirate's "sugar daddy" of sorts. He happened to have owned …

After watching PotC2, I decided to find out if Tortuga was a real place, and if so, where it was located. I discovered that it is part of Haiti, a separate island just to the north of the main one. Given the volatile political situation in Haiti, I wonder whether or not Tortuga is a viable tourist destination. Are there any resorts located there? Has anyone here visited Tortuga? How safe is it? Cheers, Hester

Hey folks! As some of you may already know, the bonny lass and I have been working on a small Etsy business called the Castaway Trading Company ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/CastawayTradingCo ). This has been a fun endeavor for us so far, and we've found it's a way of making a little extra cash that we both really enjoy. However, the Etsy business alone is not the be-all, end-all of what we want to do. Eventually, we would very much like to begin a storefront costume business - and not necessarily a strictly pirate-themed one either - but that's still a long way down the road for us, and we thought this might be a good way to get our feet wet, so to speak. At any rate, …

My friends, Prayers are needed now. Ship Runs Aground, Sailors Rescued OXNARD — A two-masted sailing ship with 20 crew members and students aboard went aground and was battered by waves near a rock jetty Monday evening, forcing dramatic rescues in heaving seas. Individuals in life jackets jumped off one by one and were picked up by rescuers on personal watercraft. All aboard were accounted for, the Ventura County Fire Department said on its Web site. The scene was broadcast live by ABC7 Eyewitness News, which reported that four people were rescued from the 58-degree water initially. Others leaped overboard as waves rolled the ship severely, pushing it toward the r…

We were thinking about repeating what we did last year which was stopping by Williamsburg (in full kit). We'd love to have any who would like to join in to let us know so that we could meet up and invade the towne in true "sailor" fashion with our wenches in tow. We will be arriving on the Tuesday the second in Williamsburg and we thought a side trip to Jamestown. We met Lily and Edward there by chance last year and had a great time!!!

I've had on me brain, fer a few years now, a trip of such magnitude that it would make the most deadly of sea creatures shutter in envy. At some point, when the time is best for the taking, I plan on heading to Venezuela, acquiring a boat (or hitching a ride), and setting sail, destination Miami. I'll follow the islands 'round the Caribbean, taking my time. It will be a great adventure! Anyone have any dream trips that they really are hoping to go on?
