Normally I would just send a private message but since this is a pretty big event, I figure if I would ask if the Royaliste is going to be there at the date of the Newport Tall Ships? http://www.tallshipsrhodeisland.org/ships.html I'm trying to figure out how I should get my time-off days from work, normally I'm up in Rhode Island for 4th July festivities, but the Tall Ships event is a week before.

Ahoy and Avast!....After a trying voyage up the Intercoastal Waterway, this battered privateer now sits in port with the brigantine MEKA II in Beaufort, NC. I gotta admit, it looks pretty salty with a privateering duo at anchor in a small town location such as this. Many thanks to all who have helped us out from the disaster over a month ago. Sadly, now the real work is just beginning. We are scheduled for haulout next week, and the repair list just keeps growing. I'm searching out some wood this morning, and then I'll start the layup for the mizzen boom repair. Might just finish it before we haul. Once the ship hits the boatyard, it'll be helter-skelter starting the work…

I just got my orders for a three year tour ashore in the Coast Guard's District 17 office (waterways management branch) in Juneau, Alaska. So, if any o' you Pacific sailors have the guts to sail north and learn why the Pacific is ill-named, give me a moment's notice and I'll guide you safely through the inside passage, as I've already got two years experience servicing the aids to navigation up here. It really is the most majestic waterway I've ever sailed. If any o' you have the inkling, I can pilot you through Peril Strait, including the infamous Serguis Narrows. I can take you past Dead Man's Reach, around Cape Decision, and to the wonderful Mount Edgecomb (the las…

Aye mates, for most lubbers, today was Tuesday, but for those of us fortunate enough and whacko enough to live it New Orleans, it was Mardi Gras! The Pyrate Queen and I made our usual voyage to Bourbon Street. We both commented that PIRATES seemed to be the most popular costuming theme this year. Aaarrgh, may our crew increase! :) Capt. I'm interested in finding a boat that will be sailing this summer for an extended period of time (May-August). I am new to sailing and hope to learn this summer. I am a very fast learner, physically fit, a hard worker, and not too bad of company either! If at all possible it would be nice to be able to work to cover my costs (e.g. food while out at sea)... I am not concerned with making a profit, other than learning to sail. I cannot afford to pay to be aboard. Please, if anyone has anything or suggestions on where to find something... let me know!

Helllo all, I’ll be going on my first cruise this summer. My wife is finishing her MBA and my mother-in-law and her husband planned the trip for us, they’ll also be going as well as our kids (12 and 8). I’m looking for things to do and places to see while we are in port. We’ll be sailing on Royal Caribbean and our stops will be Nassau, Cococay, and Key West. I’m already planning on going to the Pirate Soul Museum and the Rum Barrel in Key West. If anyone has some points of interest they’d like to share I’d be very thankful. Thanks for you time and info, Gryffin

About 3 days ago, I returned from a movie job in Puerto Rico. I was there for a month. and even though the job wasn't my cup of tea, or rum anyway, my time off was pretty amazing! If you've been there. you know, but if you haven't, I'll tell you a little of what you can expect. Old San Juan was, and is, a walled city, dating from around 1510, and the walls and Spanish forts are still there. Being a U.S. possession, the 2 main forts have some nice park service displays, and since the forts overlook the Caribbean Sea, nice views. I was put up at the Carib Hilton, and the hotel is surrounded by Spanish gun emplacements. The first week, I was rather disappointed in the lack o…

For many months after not getting into the schools I applied for I've been searching for something to do, and I decided the ideal thing would be some kind of volunteer job that would allow me to learn scuba diving and boating, in some warm country where people speak English, while preferably doing some kind of environmental care work, and if possible not having to pay a fortune for it. Sounds nice doesn't it? The problem was that I didn't know where to look for such a thing, and the ones I found that somewhat matched my ideal criteria were all in loverly places like the Caribbean, which sadly does cost a fortune to go to. However, the new year brought new hope. I'm no…

I wanted to make something for the Pirate House project that did not cost lost of doubloons so I looked around at things I have that can be used for the project. I covered the speaker box with floor planking left over from the Galley project.. I picked up a mod podge box from the local craft shop for $4 and used the weather instruments from a a 20 year old hanging Wal Mart weather station. I used a craft store ship's wheel that I bought 8 years ago for $12. I wanted the wheel to turn so my grand children could play with it when they visit. I used an old ceiling fan to give the wheel movement. Here is the weather station with humidity, temperature, and barome…

The place was a gilded hades, and mammon held sovereign sway over its people. Bearded seamen, bronzed and weather-stained, bedecked with priceless jewellery and the finest silks of the Orient, swaggered along its quays and gambled with heavy gold coins whose value no one cared to estimate... Common seamen hung their ears with heavy gold rings studded with the costliest gems... And every man in that crowd of pirates lived beneath the shadow of the gallows. - Account of life in Port Royal, Jamaica by 17th century traveller named Henderson

I already have a bar in my basement, but it's not piratical enough for me. Everyone else seems to be impressed, but a few bits of swag and some seashells aren't nearly enough for me. I'm thinkin bout rebuilding the bar and laminating some jewels, piece's o' eight and various other baubles to the top, and I have a couple other ideas in progress. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, I'm tryin to think of how to make a piratical beer pong table Any bits of inspiration will be most appreciated!

Avast, alla ya scabborous seadogs! After an 'interesting' week offshore from NYC, dodgin' a gale in Cape May, NJ, Privateer ROYALISTE is in Norfolk, Va., departing this a.m. on the Intercoastal Waterway, headed towards Florida. So, I have a work obligation which will take me to Petra and Amman, Jordan, and then to Cairo, Egypt. Yes, I will try to get to the Treasury and along the Siq in Petra; and I certainly intend on getting within focal range of the Great Pyramids and Sphinx (Ahhh... I have been inside buildings even older!). And I totally promise to post some photos here upon my return. But, any suggestions from the Pirate crowd? I will have precious little free time to sight-see, but I will be frustrated beyond belief if someone out there knows of a Jordanian or Egyptian pirate connection and does not reveal it to me before my trip. I am aware of all the touristy must-see stuff (alth…

I went to http://maps.google.com/ and located the real Tortuga (see my post under (Tortuga) I chose sattelite and took meself a tour. Good thing I hid me ship, where it was safe to drop anchor! It seems the center of the island is vastly vegetated and empty. The Western side has a very large lake and swamps. The North coast is cliffs and rocks and heavy surf, but the Southern coast IS populated. There seem to be farms, houses and boats. Given the political climate of this area between Cuba and Haiti (think kidnapping, guerillas, modern day piracy) I doubt it's safe. But It was a tantalizing fascinating lil trip via this service. From Haitis dept of tourism in Wash D…
