I was looking up Mystic Seaport the other day. I got to wondering if any of you ever went there? How was the whole experience? From what is says it look like the perfect museum. We have been talking about what we would like to see in a pirate fair. This is what I mostly had in mind, just add sailors/pirates. Of course those sailors/pirates would have to know what they were all about. Just wondering what the rest of you all think?

It's been 5 months since we booked our trip that we finally get to go on this weekend! We are going on an overnight sailing trip on the Schooner Brilliant out of Mystic Seaport in CT. Although we have not yet gone on the trip, some of the blog posts I have read about it seem pretty awesome! I'll post the pictures when we get back- but I already think we will want to do it again! Anyone on the Pub do this trip?

Aye!..We're making ready for this year's sailing season, and once again I'm hunting one or two able bodied seamen for the 200+ mile trip to Hampton....then who knows? Physically fit, some sea legs, a bit of sailing experience, relatively clean, no vegetarians, little baggage, able to get along with non internet crew, converse intelligently to the public, not thin-skinned....step on up, mates, chances like this are few and far between....

I am fixing up some gear for a Pirate Raid next weekend and needed a couple of more sword frogs so I made a trip to Hobby Lobby and found some leather and dye. This is my first attempt at this kind of frog.....I think if will do the job on my loaner gear. The leather is kinda thin...I will look for some thick stock when I get the chance. Joe

http://www.sptimes.com/2008/03/09/Neighbor...ship_sink.shtml Mock pirate ship sinks The Treasure Seeker, a tourist attraction at the Pier, sank during its owners' attempted move to the Virgin Islands. The Treasure Seeker, formerly the Lady Betsea, was moored at the St. Petersburg Pier for almost two years until last month.

St. Augustine is getting our own pirate ship, a version of the Black Pearl. She is being built by a local hotel owner and will be located at the city yacht pier for a while them moved to the Fountain of Youth as her final home. Don't know her arrival date but I know she will be here for the Florida Heritage Book Festival September 14th & 15th. I'll post more as I find out the details. Keep to the Code! Joe

In the category of 'huh...whaddya know?": I'm sure that there are some of you that would automatically think of this gentleman when thinking of Sleepy Hollow and Pirates: And by my ignorance, when I responded to someone's post regarding ghost tales and headless horsemen in another thread, little did I know the connection to a particular pillar of the community by the name of Lord Frederick Philipse, who happened to be New York's wealthiest merchant . Most books label him as a pirate broker. Look up Frederick Philipse (Phillips) in most pirate history books and he's in it. In short, he was basically a pirate's "sugar daddy" of sorts. He happened to have owned …

This little project took about 2 hours and filled a small wall just right. I got this flat white mirror from the neighbors trash the day after their yard sale...it still had a $10 price tag on it.....I painted it gold and mounted it on the wall then placed a nautical shelf that I bought at the flee market for $15.......after hanging the mirror and the shelf they still look like they were missing something so I hung my mugs to the larboard and starboard...think it came out nice and filled the alcove just right. I never realized haw difficult it is to photograph a mirror with out getting yourself in it....lol Fair Winds Joe

Fortunately or unfortunately -- depending on how you look at it -- I will be traveling to Turkey in early December on a work-related obligation (yes, I know it is the off-tourist rainy season). There will be precious little time available for sightseeing or touring (I do know that a group trip down the Bosphorus is in the plans), but I thought I would cast my net among you -- any suggestions on what to do, what to see or (more importantly) what to try to purchase while there? I will certainly be able to hit some shops, if nothing else. Yes, I will bring back some Turkish Delight (my kids are sick of it, however) but, unlike last year's trip to Jordan (go if you have …

I'm currently in Hong Kong and I spent a day at the famous Stanley market on HK island. I made it a point to check out the Maritime Museum after seeing it mentioned in Pirates Magazine. Great small FREE museum! Give it a look see if you are in the area!

The organizers of PyrateCon 2008 are in New Orleans for a few days getting all the groundwork laid for what will be an incredible experience for everyone. The group is meeting not only with event, hotel, and vendor folks but have an appointment with the Mayor of New Orleans to talk about his involvement with the Con!!! Updates will be printed in The Pyrates Way magazine in every issue and expect to see marketing materials online and in your mailbox about the PyrateCon. The Pyrates Way is a major supporter and sponsor of PyrateCon 2008. With the fiasco that was PyrateCon2007 (read about that in the Summer Pyrates Way magazine), the new organizers of PyrateCon 2008 have t…

I recently came across an interesting new boat. She's ultra modern, but with a distinctly traditional look. The boat is the 298-foot Maltese Falcon, a brand new super yacht. Not only does the boat look great, she is easy to operate, and relatively simple. She's square-rigged, but she brings a whole new dimension to the concept. I still think that without at least a couple heads'ls and a spanker that there just seems to be something missing. However, that's just my opinion. Below are some pictures I got from the ship's website, www.symaltesefalcon.com. A couple of interesting notes. She can set/douse one sail per mast at a time, and it takes about a minu…

Long before "POTC-At Worlds End" ever made a big deal of the so-called green flash, I have heard stories in and around SW Florida about this phenomenon. Even the staff at restaurants that have a full panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico that make their money on the "sunset crowd" (such as Gulf View grille in Englewood Beach) have always talked about it. But then again some inns inhistoric districts always have ghost stories. I have seen many a sunset in SW Forida, the Keys, to and the Carribbean, desparately awaiting the green flash and have yet witness such a phenomenon. ...still. But then again, I have never seen the Aurora Borealis either. Anyone ever seen i…

Ahoy there, mateys. Can any of ye' brethren or sistren recommend a day cruise. My first mate and young crew member are lookin' to leave all landlubbers behind and sail with some real pyrates of the Caribbean. We'll stop in San Juan, P.R., Aruba, Curacao, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas. I have seen a pirate ship in Aruba, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas, but they seem like party boats, not pirate boats. Any information? Has anyone been on the Lord Sheffield Pirate cruise, in St. Maarten? Or the Jolly Pirate ship in Aruba? They both sound better than the boats in St. Thomas. If anyone has been on both, a review would be very much appreciated.

Ahoy all! Went to the Pirates Dinner Adventure Theatre last night with friends. I must say their show has really improved there. It was fantastic. More stunts, great sword play and a really good story line. The food was good for a dinner theater. Everything was hot and cooked correctly. The beer, wine and soda made many rounds. Well worth the price of admission. Plus they welcome you in costume. New is the VIP lounge. It has better libations and appetizers before the show and you can upgrade to prime rib at dinner as part of the package. Plus you can watch all the show from behind a one way glass. A good space, complete with the governor making the rounds. Well worth…

email me at: steve@pyratesway.com with "Gimme $50" in the subject line and I'll give you the secret information that might just win you $50 CASH, a free subscription to The Pyrates Way, and to have one special photo from pyratecon printed in the Summer Pyrates Way. It's sneaky and fun. . . thereby fulfilling 2 out of 3 prerequisites for a pyrate activity (if you spend the $50 on rum, you've got all 3 out of 3). Send me a note, mates!
