Yes, I need to know how many months (average) building a ship lasted in the Age of Sail... I know it might depend on the ship's size, but let's say a frigate... or a sloop of war... something average.

I just purchased a Fortune 30 cutter here in Alaska (30' LOD, 33' 6" LOA, 10' 4" Beam, 4' Draft). She's a pretty little fiberglass cruising boat with a seperate aft cabin. I love the look of wood, but in this climate, it's a pain and very costly to maintain. So, I settled on a fiberglass hull with classic looking lines. To me, she looks a little like a coastal or fishing sloop from the early 1800s. But with the added safety of a 20hp inboard. Currently, her name is Pacific High 1, but I'm looking to change that to Sanctioned Mistress. Yes, I know it's supposedly bad luck to change a boat name, but Pacific High just doesn't suit me. I'm a good enough sailor to deal…

On Oct 17...just a couple days from now...I'll be taking ship on a cruise to the Bahamas. Despite my Pyraticallness (now Officially a word), I've never been on the ocean before. (Been *over* it, flying to Germany and back). The thing that has me most worried isn't seasickness (I been on Lake Erie in a bit of a chop, and wasn't bothered at all), its getting thru customs. Fie on them lubbers! Anyway, I'll be on the Carnival Pride, with an official shore excursion lined up for Epcot during the Port Canaveral port of call (so's I can go to the Food and Wine Festival), and Nassau I'm a-doin' on me own...hitting the Pirates museum, seeing the site of the 1695 Old Fort Nass…

I've had on me brain, fer a few years now, a trip of such magnitude that it would make the most deadly of sea creatures shutter in envy. At some point, when the time is best for the taking, I plan on heading to Venezuela, acquiring a boat (or hitching a ride), and setting sail, destination Miami. I'll follow the islands 'round the Caribbean, taking my time. It will be a great adventure! Anyone have any dream trips that they really are hoping to go on?

Despite controversy, homecoming is a magical time for teen sailor Jessica WatsonBy: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com It's the eve of Jessica Watson's return to civilization, after seven months spent sailing around the world, and the 16-year-old Australian brims with excitement. "It's like the day before Christmas except I don't ever remember getting this excited about Christmas," she posted on her blog. An estimated 50,000 fans will cheer as the intrepid mariner docks at the Opera House and steps wobbly from a 34-foot pink sailboat on which she will have lived, with stuffed animals as her only companions, for 210 days. Watson, who has been dubbed "Australia's Salty Lady" by o…

I have heard rumors that the Port Washington Pirate festival is going to happen. Anyone know the details? I posted this here because I found no way to post on the events thread. Delete if you must for my rule breaking ways.

I wanted to put some teak oil on the flooring of my boat. First I needed to swab off the mud from last year. That meant moving a bunch of stuff so that I could roll the boat out of my garage. The stuff I had to move included: two swivel guns of different sizes, two wooden buckets, a wood crate (for camping gear, not treasure), and a wooden barrel. I'm pretty sure that I'm the only person in my neighborhood who has to move cannons in order to get to his boat. Does anyone else have an interesting garage? Mark

Ahoy, shipmates! I just returned from a business trip to Charleston, SC, and had a wonderful time! I wound up organizing an event at "The Buccaneer", a local restaurant with a pirate theme. It was an excellent evening full of tales of Vance, Bonnet, and Blackbeard and the history of Charleston! If youa re ever in the Charleston area, I recommend a trip down to the old town area and an evening of food and drink at this place! I was there for St. Patrick's Day and had a great time at $3 a Guinness! If you want more info, check out their website - http://www.thebuccaneerrestaurant.com/! Blackbead

I think I want to visit there once I have a firm grasp of espaňol. I don't imagine they'll have museums honoring the pirates or anything, but I'd still like to see it. Perhaps check out the Galapagos while I'm that close. A port of good historical pirate significance, methinks.

(Please please please feel free to offer me any advice) Other the Christmas holiday I went over to my sisters and to my surprise my brother inlaw wanted to sell me his sailboat (dinghy) for only $50. I would have to be mad....er to pass up that offer so I did what any pirate without a boat would do. I commandeered it, as it were. She floats that's the good news but as the title states this is a "project." She has no mast, boom, center board, rudder or sails. However if I shop smart and play my cards right I can find all that stuff at my local hardware store for until $100. Here are some pictures of the boat in which I've dubbed Lady Rose I was happy to s…

Like many, I dream of one day owning my own boat. With my current mortgage and car payment, the cold truth is that I may never be able to afford my own boat. So, the thought occurs to me, if I can't own one, how about work on one? The big question is, where would I even begin looking for such a job? The Washington Post employment section seems to have passed over the categories of "boat jobs" or "jobs on the water".

Although our landfall was at Nuka Hiva, Hiva Oa was the major port in the Marquesas. We cleared customs at Nuka Hiva and the Government seat is still there, the only reason we made landfall there was "used Pilot books"! We spent a little time in Nuka Hiva then left, bound for Ua Huka, best known for their carvings in wood. Once we were on course for some hours we encountered a "Willi-wah". A variable in the trade winds that gets funneled between islands and the venturi effect increases the velocity greatly. The direction waqs directly on our course so, change plans! After a quite uncomfortable night we made for Tauata, a small island off the major port of Atuona. We decid…

Well, I just got back from my cruise on the Disney Wonder... and by "just got back", I be meaning some time last week. The entire journey, including the drive from D.C. down to Fla, was amazing. We stopped over at Myrtle Beach for a night. We left in the pre-dawn hours and our GPS took us on a strange and somewhat scary adventure through the coastal back roads of South Carolina. You know in movies how you see a dark scary swamp with lots of spanish moss and water all around and then there's the one run down shack sitting by itself...? And then some guy in a top hat and his face painted like a skull come out? Yah, we saw that place. A few times. Seemed to keep going…

You just can't beat being behind an oar! I wish I had more pics out on the water, but... I was kinda busy rowing! It was a really windy day. I'm surprised we were even able to make any headway against the wind. But we had 12 people on the oars, so we were able to do well enough.

Since some of us have had the pleasure of crewing on this beautiful ship (and firing cannons at landlubbers from her deck), I'm starting a topic so that those of us who have been sailing on her can talk about the experience and share photos. She has been built over the past thirty-five years by Hayden Brown. He built most of her himself (although he admits that he had to buy the lines, sails and engine.) I've had the pleasure of being part of her crew for the past five years, including taking part in multi-day, off-shore sails.

Resorts World at Sentosa http://www.rwsentosa.com/en_xperientialmuseum.html "The Maritime Xperiential Museum will take you back in time on one of the greatest adventures in history: It is here that the tale of maritime adventurers, sea pirates, and the growth of sea trade between Asia, the Middle East and Europe is told. The museum provides a fascinating look at the history of the Maritime Silk Route along the Strait of Malacca and Asia's greatest ports and coastal cities from 9th to 19th century, when explorers discovered and opened up trade new maritime routes. The museum's centerpiece is a huge 360-degree multimedia theatre, where visitors "board" an Arabia-bound s…
