The brig Astrid ran aground near Cork and sank shortly after leaving port. The reports state that an engine failure, combined with strong wind and current were the culprits. All 30 crew and trainees were evacuated safely, and now she is holding fast to the rocks with little movement. surveyors and divers are apparently going to consider possible salvage of the nearly 100 year old vessel, but it's too soon to make any real predictions along that front. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2376754/Major-air-sea-rescue-plucks-thirty-volunteers-tall-ship-Astrid-runs-aground-rough-weather.html http://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/divers-and-surveyor-to-con…

Three photos here http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/africa/05/01...k.ap/index.html WINDHOEK, Namibia (AP) -- Geologists searching for diamonds have stumbled upon a shipwreck loaded with gold and silver coins, ivory and cannons to fend off pirates. An archaelogist told The Associated Press on Thursday that the ship dates back some 500 years -- around the time Vasco de Gama and Columbus were plying the waters of the New World. The Namdeb Diamond Corp. had reported Wednesday that geologists discovered the shipwreck on April 1 during a search for diamonds off Namibia's southwest coast. Astrolabes and other period navigational tools were discovered. * Spanish gold coins, P…

In cleaning out his mother's garage this weekend, Bob came across an old relic from his childhood and apparently much older. Family tradition has it that this magnet came from the compass of an old ship. It is curved, about the size and shape of a piece of horn, very heavy, highly magnatized and encased in a thin layer of black-painted wood. One end appears to be roughly broken, but with a concave with a smoothly ground circular end and a rough, broken end, with a circular concave indentation carved into it. There is no record of what ship it came from or how old it is. Bob is 53 now and played with it as a child, pulling bits of metal out of the dirt. His dad used it …

I was fortunate to receive some valuable answers the last time I posted a question in this forum, so I thought I'd try my luck again. I'm embarking on a new project, a fictional account of a brig returning from England to its home port in Rhode Island in the 1760s. I have the story itself worked out. But I've run aground on the details. The truth is, I have very little nautical knowledge, especially as it relates to the mid-18th century. I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend books or any other source material that I might use to familiarize myself with life at sea during the 1760s or thereabouts. I'm interested to know the layout of such a ship (brig), naut…

So I have been looking around at sailboats for a while for later in life and started to think maybe I should look at boats that I could enjoy by myself if no one felt up to a cruise with me. I came across this maker of gaff rigged dingies. As much as being a pyrate in a dingy sounds demeaning these look like good fun. Does anyone have any input on these or just sailing one-man sailboats. Anyone got a internet source fer tall ship photos that show life and layout belowdeck? I'm not so much interested in drawings, though that may suffice.

Greetings, I be working on a semi-scratch built model of Blackbeard's Bermuda Sloop Adventure for the Bath Tri-Centennial Museum. All is going fine with the exception of the sprityard dilema. The model is based on Howard Chapelle's plans, which does not indicate this yard; however, literature/picture search of such vessels does include it on certain prints. So, I am curious if this knowledgeable band has an opinion on this. Me sincere thanks !

After many interuptions, especially from making ships in bottles for Dreamworks Production of Alice Seabold's novel The Lovely Bones, the QAR model of the museum at Teach's Hole on Ocracoke is in the standing rigging phase. Thought you'd enjoy viewing the Admiralty Version (without masts). Research on constructing the model included long discussions with David Moore and folks with the QAR Project. Model completion deadline is mid-late February. 1) A drawing from Smithsonian magazine QAR article: http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/2go...se/100_2381.jpg Photo 2: Admiralty Style—Port View: http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/2go...se/…

BEAUFORT, North Carolina (Reuters) -- Nearly three centuries ago, the notorious pirate Blackbeard ran aground in his ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, off what is now a North Carolina beach town. This month, a crew of 13 heads out to sea each day, hoping for clear-enough weather to dive the 20 to 25 feet to the ocean bottom to excavate what they believe is Blackbeard's ship. The team has found cannons, a bell, lead shot of all sizes, gold dust, pewter cups and medical devices, like a urethral syringe used to treat syphilis with mercury. "A saying at the time was 'a night with Venus and a month with mercury.' And mercury doesn't even cure you," lead archeologist Chris Sou…

Can anyone suggest a source of information on the British prison ships that were docked in Halifax Harbor in Nova Scotia? American Revolutionary prisoners were kept in deplorable conditions on these ships- I'm trying to discover if my ancestor was kept on one during his imprisonment (he was an active revolutionarly) in August of 1775 Here's one article on Halifax Harbor prison ships

I'm a 3d artist and for my next project I'd love to model a pirate ship. However, I'm having a real hard time finding good reference material. What I need are drawings and pictures of all angles of a ship and ideally blueprints. If anyone happens across such a thing in their web explorations, I'd love to know about it. Thanks!

As I have decided to become a pirate the question arose how I could get myself a ship. Unfortunately I live far away from any sea, so only a boat would be suitable, because I have to somehow transport it over land. As you can't - at least in the middle of south Germany - just walk to the next pirate boat seller around the corner, I have to build such a boat by myself. To still get it on a trailer such a boat should not be to big, so I made a design (all the members of the "Mercury" will recognise the design, because Mr. Brands "Gullah" was the inspiration for my longboat https://pyracy.com/index.php/topic/19074-draughts-of-the-mercury-and-smallboats/?hl=gullah#entry413…
