Okay, so I have begun making a bodiced gown for Kate (me loverlly wif)... There are a ton of good images out there (the many fashion plates that are posted and re-posted are likely the best source), but there are some great paintings and other sources as well. I've looked through the pub and not found a thread dedicated to this garment yet, so I thought I would start one. I'll post pictures as I get things done, so far I have only drafted a pattern, and cut out the interlining layers (still not 100% sure which fabric from the stash I will be using for the outer layer, although I am leaning towards a light "sea-foam" green. Anyways, hope this thread will flourish with i…

Ahoy the ship (of craftiness!) I am starting the process of putting together a fully functional kit to be ready for an event this fall, and I am starting almost entirely from scratch. What I have from back in my “heyday” is either too ‘disney’, too small, or long gone. I thought it might be of interest to some to chronicle this as I go – both to share ideas, and also to get advice and input. This is going to be a combination of sewing projects, upcycling, and thrifting. I will probably be exploring fabric options and sourcing, trying to find a balance between authenticity and convenience/expedience, and doing this all in a relatively short amount of time. …

I think I'm going to try to make a pair of slops without a pattern. (I really wish I had a pattern, but GAoP style slop patterns don't seem to exist.) What would be the best or most appropriate type/weight of linen to use? I'm thinking 'heavy and soft' but don't know what that would translate into as far as weight and hand description. TIA!

So in a different thread I talk about turing a Pop Up tent trailer into a Pirate theme pop up tent trailer. I was thinking about making a small cannon to have some fun with. But not a Black powder type. My friend suggest (my friend being a seattle area theater rigger, fire performer and a pyrotechnicnition) I make a Calcium Carbonate cannon, I found some instruction on the old interwebs The link... Anyone have any experience in this type of cannon. I would make it out of PVC and wood. Thoughts?

Original shift circa 1700 white linen...wide neck w/drawstring and short opening down center front. Sleeve gathered into shoulder and into band at elbow. Elbow band has buttons for closing. Large gore at each side with smaller gore at bottom. Neck and Sleeve finished with bobbin lace. I think this size fits Cheeky or did you adjust yours?

I made a shortcoat of tartan wool some months back for my Highlander/Jacobite kit... just curious if it would be to outlandish to wear it with a pirate kit? I have seen several plates with sailors wearing tartan breeches and slops but have yet to see any reenactors wearing tartan for pirate events... What say ye?

Well, our unofficial start date was Nov 1st so lets get started. If you are new to the project, you can check out the Topic Starter (on this forum) called "Group Justaucorps Project". You can join in at any time its not a race or contest.... So, my latest is I haven't decided which material to use.... even after a month of thinking about it. I got some more grosgrain silk... So now I have a some blue for the body and some scarlet for the turn-back cuffs..... My goal is to make something like this I still need some lining material though. Anyone have a cheap source for tafetta? PS This is the site that the plate above is from http://collectionsonline.lacma.org/m…

I have been looking into reproducing authentic navigation sea charts. I have downloaded hundreds of maps off the web but I cannot find any that are complete maps, or they are too small to read the print, or there is some other issue with them. With all the pirate related books I have you would think I could find something of use there, but I cannot. The only place I haven't checked is the local Historical Society Library because they are only opened a few days a week, when I am at work. I have two questions; 1. Has anyone here ever reproduced a sea chart before? 2. Does anyone have any suggestions to where can I find good quality, large format sea charts (circa 1700) t…

Inspired by a thread on this forum several years ago and a few close encounters with Maddogge at this year's Pike River, I thought I should try to capture the smell of a pirate, as close as possible. I did this for a few reasons: 1) I hate the smell of bug spray. Bug spray and campfire smoke together smell so chemically and nasty that it just takes me right out of period. Maybe I can make myself stink so much that the bugs will leave me alone! 2) I tend to stink after a few days in the sun and no shower anyway, so I might as well stink as historically accurate as possible. After Pike River, I balled up all my clothes and threw them into a tupperware container without w…

So, I have the Simplicity "Jack Sparrow" Costume pattern, which includes a coat, vest, breeches and shirt. I used it to make my hubby's Captain Morgan costume for Halloween: (lol) I was wondering how accurate or close to accurate the pattern is (not the costume I made), if there were adjustments that can be made to use the vest and coat pattern for reenactment wear, or if I should just purchase a new pattern. And for that matter, are there any mainstream patterns that are good for reenactment attire? JoAnn's is having a sale next week: all patterns are $1.99, so if there is anything that can be done for them I thought that would be a great way to save a bit of coin.…

So over the last week or two, I slowly put together a leather portmanteau (I was taking my time, and have been busy with other things as well). I made a small one, as this was my first attempt, and I needed and wanted something to put all of my black powder cleaning and loading supplies in (they were busting my haversack at the seams ). The whole thing is about 5 to 6 inches in diameter, and about 15 inches long. Normally it would have a leather strap, but Diosa made this awesome inkle woven strap for me to use, and I thought it would make a much nicer and cooler strap. I am currently making a second small luggage size one (about 7 inches by 20 inches) that will b…

Avast! As mentioned on another thread, I am in the midst of making a grey wool coat among other things. If you click on my link, you will see my name ought to be Ajax rather than Morgan! How would I add some grime to my garments? I know not to wash...but I would like to speed things up a bit. I know the coffee & tea bath trick...what I am looking for is grey, ring-around-the collar grime. Suggestions?

So I've been thinking too much, and I started wondering if there were any colours that were particularily popular to the GAoP.... And would certain colours be significantly more or less in cost and have class issues attached to them? I don't know a great deal about the GAoP yet, but I'm thinking by that point in history, the fabric/dyeing industry would have developed to the point where most colours are obtainable, but it's still early enough that I think certain colours would be easier or harder to obtain and hence affect the price thereof and possibly have class connotations attached to them. I'm specifically wondering about ochre... I have a few spare yards of ochre …

I wasn't entirely sure where to put this thread, so please relocate it if necessary. =) It's my captain's birthday soon, and I've been trying to figure out what to get/do/make for him for a while now. It occurred to me today that, while he has designed a flag for himself and has a few items with that design on them... he doesn't have an actual FLAG! This will not do! I looked around these boards and the internet in general, and found that the most common material for the body of the flag was wool bunting, right? Well, wool bunting is wicked expensive these days, which makes me sad. I'd really like to use SOME form of wool, but having never purchased or worked with that…

As I am going to Lockhouse in July and am rapidly putting my kit together, I realize I need a tent to sleep in. I have LOTS of wools to use as blankets and any crap covers inside the tent, so that isn't an issue. My problem: not much budget right now. SO, whereas, in theory, pirates would not have "general issue" camping gear, wouldn't have the means or necessity to have complex camping gear, that should not be overcome-able. So, what should I buy? How much of it? How would I put it together? What do I need to do with it before the event (prepping it)? Oh, and this just for me to sleep in.

I was wondering, for those that do a lot of camping at the events, do you have or use anything like the boy scout patrol boxes? Google search that for pictures... I was thinking that one could be "hidden" in something looking like a barrel or a sea chest. Just something that crossed my mind.

Well mates, a lucky thing occured. I was gifted 4 yards of linen....only problem is...its jet black.........and i dont want anything i make from it to seem rich...or as if i was mourning.......im aware that black wasnt the most uncommon color, but I feel its too black for a black man to afford.......wow that sounded.........*cough......... SOOOOO whats a good way to fade it quickly? though i could indeed use the sun, but id like to get it to an even coal grey.......OOOORRRR am i just freaking out, and it isnt all that much a problem .......i was thinking of making a sleeved waistcoat out of it, and mabey breeches if theres left overs...but not to wear at the same time....…
