Before I get any Hollywood Pyrates in a "huff"... I want to explain this thread. This thread is about what are the minimum acceptable garb standards to participate at an Authentic event. It has nothing to do with what someone wears to a Renaissance Faire, nor is it telling anyone how he or she has to play Pyrate. It is a discussion about Authentic events only. ********************************************************** Last year at PiP we talked about this... (NOTE: this only applies to what is now the 1729 Careening Camp) We want to have a period camp, but don't want to scare people away. It takes time to put together authentic garb. So far, we haven't set a mini…

There is an older thread but its outdated. Since there is a demand for information, sources and prices have changed a lot since the Covid era. I'm not going to maintain links (but will provide website name in parenthesis when possible). Will try to note the sources that might be more modern or not quite period (target is late 1600s thru early 1700s). Not promoting or recommending these sources. They are "for information only"... I would like to stress making your own kit is the most historic and economical option (if you are able) If you run across other sources please post them below and I'll add/edit appropriately to original post.. hat blanks: E…

I've been working on some Baldric Buckles (or can be used as a belt buckle too). They are still wax models and I'm going to have them cast in bronze and antiqued. They measure 5 1/8 X 3 5/8. Only problem is they can only be done in a minimum order of 12. I will have to sell the other 10 in order to pay for the casting. If enough people here are interested in buying the other ten off me , I'll go ahead and have them done as it is nearly $500 to have them cast. I have more buckle designs in the works and this will be the first of my line, if I can move them out the door. I will put my logo (gibbet and bones) on the bottom of these buckles. Does $45 + shipping sound like a f…

There has been so much discussion concerning stays, and so many enthusiastic folk attempting their first, that the Captain and I thought this may be of help. These are all period patterns ~ I made stays for myself from Simplicity, Butterick, and the below patterns, and have found the GAoP patterns to be the most comfortable. Be sure to note the seam and boning placement ~ this is critical to achieving the cone form, as opposed to a tubular form. How I used these patterns ~ I measured from the center of my breastbone to just above my privates, for the busk (wooden stabilizer which completes the form ~ can also be switched out for boning or reed, for a more flexible fit).…

so I have been sitting here for a few weeks knowing it is that time where I need to make a decision about buying vs making stays is nearing. The last time I had them made and that was a few years and about 30 pounds ago and for the life of me, I can't remember who made them for me..anyway getting to the point I have a changing midsection of size, extremely curvy and am hoping to lose about 20 pounds before summer. Which brings me the challenge of do I tempt the fates and make my own and if I do how do I deal with the fact of possibly losing weight and the fact I am hourglass shape, under 5' with no midsection and stays are cylindrical and long in patterns- how do I de…

I just came home with a lovely hide of 3-4 oz leather that I am looking forward to making into a baldric or two. I hav a slew of reference photos that I am going to use (and I am sorry to say Captain Sterling and Mickey S. that I have pilfered these images from Hollywood!). However, I am a little vague on the dimensions of the 3 components that I am to make. Has anyone made their own (I am sure that you all have) and do you have a pattern that you would be willing to share? I am also looking for a non Acme Brand (Hollywood) alternative for a buckle if any of you have a suggestion. I am thinking to make the baldric about 2.25 inches wide... Thanks for any suggestions.…

I am on a hunt for pine tar for pitching mugs, cups, tankards, pitchers, and all sorts of Jacks. I realize that Jas. Townsend has "Brewers Pitch", I have used it. Unfortunately what they have is yellow in colour, not dark brown or black, and it is brittle. If you drop you jack it will crack! Does anyone know here I can find the dark pitch? Capt Black

Ok everytime I look for sailors clothes I can find most stuff on what the captains wore. I would like to do a more common sailor look. After all there were more sailors than captains right? But to make the outfit I would need pictures. Pictures of yourselves or from books would be great.

The Fontange or Fontage is a very unique headdress of the 17th Century. From 1690–1710, originating in France then making its’ way to England by the early 1690s. A fontange was a lady's headdress named after Marie Angélique de Scorailles de Roussille, duchesse de Fontanges (1661–1681), mistress of Louis XIV of France and worn by women of the late 17th century and early 18th century. It is said that the Duchess tied her hair up with a ribbon after losing her cap while horseback riding. The king liked the look and it soon became fashionable. Though this fad started around 1680, when relatively low, ribbon-trimmed caps appeared (e.g. the "fontange à la sultane", worn with …

Slops 1 2

INTRODUCTION This is how I made a pair of semi-period slops. OK, they are made from hemp canvas, sewn with linen thread, and all visible seams are hand finished. So why only "Semi-period ?"...... I can't "back-up" these slops with any good documentation. So they are a reasonable "guess". I'm not sure if the pockets with flaps are period, The Tailor's pattern for knee breaches that I'm basing them on shows where pockets would go, but they are farther forward than where I put them on these slops. I'm assuming that a Sailor/Pyrate wouldn't go to the nearest Jo Ann's and buy a pattern. He would know the basic cut and fit of slops, but there would be a wide range of varia…

I'm getting ready for the Texas Ren-faire here in a couple of weeks and this year I've decided to bring some period-ish camping gear including a canvas tent (probably a big diamond though this is still a work in progress), bed, and chest. The bed turned out well so I thought I'd post a quick how-to with pictures going up this evening. Note that I have no actual mattress listed but have found the bed to be very comfortable as is with a piece of folded canvas on top of the cording. Materials: Two Rough Cedar 8' 2x4's - $5.00 each One Rough Cedar 8' 4x4 - $15.00 Approx 150' 1x4" manilla (preferred) or sisal what I used and works fine - $10 One 48" 7/8" hardwood dowel …

Ahoy Mates, Does anyone know of a commercially (or otherwise) available pattern for a coat appropriate for the years 1710-1715 that would be fairly easy for a novice to assemble? I started to buy the "Jack Sparrow" pattern from Simplicity, but I really prefer something that is completely historically accurate instead. Any help would be so greatly appreciated, and me thanks in advance!

My attempt at purchasing stockings has been less than successful and fit is marginal. Who makes a better than average stockings that come above the knee? Ones that will be satisfactory with breeches as well as with longer slops, wool, silk or whatever. Jas. Hook

Just thought i'd post some pictures of the Letter of Marque I made earlier this year: Its based on a couple of different letters of marque as I couldnt find one that was actually a George the First issue. The overall look is inspired by a William the Third Letter of marque while the caligraphy at the top if based on a George the Third version of the document. The text (apart from the very bottom bit) is from a 1703 Letter of Marque that Queen Anne issued.

Started making 'em and selling 'em off myself, and while I have no delusions of grandeur I'm happy that I recouped my investment on each one! Obviously they are all from the late 18th century, the first one is rabbit felt and the others are canvas covered wool felt, all the cockades were made by yours truly, and everything was hand-stiched (The Blisters! Arrgghh!). The last one I'm almost done with, the person who is buying it wants it to look like Aubrey's hat from Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World. I think I've got most of the details right, just have to figure out a way to make it shiny now, anyone have any ideas?

…
