I am getting ready to have some clothes made and will probably need to come up with my own fabric. The clothes should be befitting someone of a governors status so very very nice. Any advice on where or what material I should be looking at? Currently I am thinking about a heavy possibly Thai silk in a single color.

currently looking at a bigger wall tent for us, and have come across a range of prices ( and i am assuming quality )... the big killer for me is the price of fire retardant material... our tent will be fire retardant, weather we use a spray or factory material... the issue for me is the fire retardant tag... none of the events so far have had the manufacturer tag as a requirement... i am kinduv thinking that the way insurance is going for some events, a fire retardant tag requirement will become the norm... any thoughts on this to help me with our decision ?? if this is the wrong forum, please feel free to move :)

Here is my attempt at a late revolutionary period bicorne, not GAoP by any means but I want to show it off to someone! The blank is from the Empire Costumes in france. I cut down the brim extensively, it measures about 8 inches tall on the fan and 6 1/2 in the front. After a lot of trial and error I also realized that the brims on hats from this period were not cut in a circle but more of an elongated oval, it might seem obvious but it was a revelation to me! I way overdid it with the starch on the brim and it got really wrinkly, but I like it as it has sort of an aged look. And I need to practice my hand stitching big time. The binding, cockade, loop and button were all …

I wasn't entirely sure where to put this thread, so please relocate it if necessary. =) It's my captain's birthday soon, and I've been trying to figure out what to get/do/make for him for a while now. It occurred to me today that, while he has designed a flag for himself and has a few items with that design on them... he doesn't have an actual FLAG! This will not do! I looked around these boards and the internet in general, and found that the most common material for the body of the flag was wool bunting, right? Well, wool bunting is wicked expensive these days, which makes me sad. I'd really like to use SOME form of wool, but having never purchased or worked with that…

So we have an event coming up here and my wife wanted a new pirate bodice and a flag so I’ve been working on these of late. The flag came out nice enough that we are going to start offering custom made, hand painted flags on our website. Here are the shoulder and breast plates for my wife's bodice: Here's her flag:

Being new to piracy, would like opinions on Flying Canoe Traders wares. Not looking to be Captain, but a humble Seaman. If anyone's got extra in their slop chest am also interested.

My achilles heel (tee hee) for any garb is my footwear. Why? Because I have plantar fasciitis. The wrong footwear will have me limping for weeks (if not months). I do NOT have flat feet, which many of us are assumed to have, so fitting is a puzzle. I wear inserts in some shoes, and believe it or not, Crocs makes a hideous but comfortable, well, croc, that I can wear without inserts. So where does that leave me with garb? I don't yet know. And I'm a lowly artist, without a fortune to spend. So, do any of you have ideas on how I can approach this aspect of my garb, either with specific brand recommendations, or for shoes/boots that I can remove the insert and put in my own…

As I am going to Lockhouse in July and am rapidly putting my kit together, I realize I need a tent to sleep in. I have LOTS of wools to use as blankets and any crap covers inside the tent, so that isn't an issue. My problem: not much budget right now. SO, whereas, in theory, pirates would not have "general issue" camping gear, wouldn't have the means or necessity to have complex camping gear, that should not be overcome-able. So, what should I buy? How much of it? How would I put it together? What do I need to do with it before the event (prepping it)? Oh, and this just for me to sleep in.

Here are the first pics of the game chest I have been working on. It came out larger than anticipated, but it should have enough room for all of Lily's games with room for growth (and then some). Or it could double as a impromptu dinner table. It is made of 1/2" poplar with pine trim. The top was done with milk paint. It will be finish coated with shellac. Now it just needs the lid cut, hinges installed, and internal storage boxes assembled.

What say ye, caricatures or not - Are striped cloth stocking caps at all accurate or just an artistic character? Is the ragged bottom slops at all accurate or again just an artistic character of a ragged pirate or castaway? Jas. Hook

Being new to this side of the 18th century (I've done later but not GAoP) I am still working on that most vital part of piracy - the hat. I have a low crown broad brim from Dirty Billy that I have used for my 1785 work -but now I am turning that large brim (5 inches) into something cocked. I have put in a single thread to hold up two front spots - but am not sure what will be the best (most period) material to make it a permanent change. I have some black leather cord that would be strong enough but really want this to look right since I am changing this hat for good and hopefully for the better - Finally a question - what is the most correct way for a working sailor t…

Made some 10k gold teeth for Halloween from some old rings I had laying around. Of course not all these teeth are used at once, I just made extras to give me more options in my look. Looks too grill when I have them all in.

Should the baldric be worn over the great coat or under it? I guess over it would make it more easy to draw a blade or other weapon but I imagine that the coat could also protect the weapons also. Anyone?

until recently, i have been using plastic tarps from the hardware store ,and covering it with canvas drop cloths as a ground cloth... recent rains have shown that water still bleeds through the woven plastic tarps... i think it was patrick hand that mentioned cnavas treated for an effective ground cloth is heavier than you would believe, which makes it close to impractical ( for him on an airplane ) short of using plastic sheeting, what else is available as an effective h2o barrier ??

So now I have a some blue for the body and some scarlet for the turn-back cuffs..... My goal is to make something like this I still need some lining material though. Let me be honnest with you guys, I am not an Pirate reenactor. But i do have a relationship with Guatemala and therefore a bit with the Caribbean eara. Visiting Guatemala I begin to know a lot of stores and people wo produce and sell traditional Guatemalan dress. From very sheep modern stuff up to handmade traditional and a bit more expencive clothing. Besides this I started to wander about how many of these traditional mayan dress would have been mixed with the europian sailors clothing durring the ages? And would it maybe an idea to pursase some of these clothing and sell it back here in Europe to pirates reenactors?? Is there anyone out here who might have a clue…

Started hand sewing my coat yesterday. Modified the Simplicity pattern with that of a 1700 coat pattern obtained from "The Costumer's Manifesto" website. Gentlemen of Fortune has a great picture spread on a completed coat here- http://www.gentlemenoffortune.com/Justaucorps.htm I guestimate it'll take about another week or so, not counting the time spent on sewing the button holes. Material is 100 percent wool suiting, light gray colored (or is that grey coloured?). Inner lining is off white colored muslin. Will try to post pics if possible as I progress. Yours, &c. Mike

Is it really necessary to have all my garb hand sewn? Do patrons pay that close attention to sewing? It seems to me that most events are geared towards sales of plastic pirate toys and accoutrements anyway. Plus at events like Nor Cal it seems that the rules are out the window. Where are these events that are so heavily monitored? just currious
