There is an older thread but its outdated. Since there is a demand for information, sources and prices have changed a lot since the Covid era. I'm not going to maintain links (but will provide website name in parenthesis when possible). Will try to note the sources that might be more modern or not quite period (target is late 1600s thru early 1700s). Not promoting or recommending these sources. They are "for information only"... I would like to stress making your own kit is the most historic and economical option (if you are able) If you run across other sources please post them below and I'll add/edit appropriately to original post.. hat blanks: E…

Before I get any Hollywood Pyrates in a "huff"... I want to explain this thread. This thread is about what are the minimum acceptable garb standards to participate at an Authentic event. It has nothing to do with what someone wears to a Renaissance Faire, nor is it telling anyone how he or she has to play Pyrate. It is a discussion about Authentic events only. ********************************************************** Last year at PiP we talked about this... (NOTE: this only applies to what is now the 1729 Careening Camp) We want to have a period camp, but don't want to scare people away. It takes time to put together authentic garb. So far, we haven't set a mini…

As a succesful pirate I would need to have a treasure. First item of 'Big Belly's' Treasure is an Aztec Artefact. Made in an one day tinker project out of plywood, cardboard, toilet paper, lots of wood glue and gold color. Over all it took me about 12 hours of work with some freewheel time in between for a little dry off. The toilet paper is fully soaked with water-diluted wood glue, so the whole thing will need several days to dry completely. The inspiration

I was wondering if anyone knew how to make or where to get what was referred to as candles. The candles that are spoken of that Blackbeard wore under his hat? They seem more like punks to me as some thing that is lit and blown out but used to light fuses as opposed to the candles whe have today. Any help would be great. Thanx

A simple question... Most (cocked) hats I see are black or something dark. Is this a mather of fasion, backed up by archeological, pictorial or written evidence? Or do we al think that dark collored hats are cooler then white, beighe or pink ones...

If yer gearin' up for PIP no need to lighten yer hoard o' booty too drastic. I bought a knock off blade w/ scabbard on clearance for $25. Spent $3 on 3 leather cinch belts at a thrift store, added a little pirate craft & in this humble Jack Tar's opinion, a decent serviceable looking weapon. I didn't tear apart the handle yet but I wouldn't trust it a fight against a whorehouse swab! Just fer looks. Pic in my gallery.

Started a sailor jacket. It is based on Reconstructing History pattern 704 - 1700s-1730s Sleeved and Sleeveless waistcoats. The medium weight wool is more a cross between royal blue and navy blue than it shows. The lining is a striped linen tablecloth from the local Goodwill store. oatmeal and light brown stripes. I decided I needed a blue sailor coat to portray a british sailor at some point in time. this color is very flexible for other things as well. No outside pockets, one inside the lining. thinking plain brass buttons at this point. mP

Ahoy Mates, Does anyone know of a commercially (or otherwise) available pattern for a coat appropriate for the years 1710-1715 that would be fairly easy for a novice to assemble? I started to buy the "Jack Sparrow" pattern from Simplicity, but I really prefer something that is completely historically accurate instead. Any help would be so greatly appreciated, and me thanks in advance!

ok---- this draft is based on Mooses /Captain Sterlings second posted picture... 1.i think the neck line is a bit too high and perhaps even not quite the correct curve/shape 2. i think the arm scythes are too high and need instead a deeper cut sooo..... does anyone mind comparing the 2 garments and telling me your opinion? and i also think i read that they had boning in the side seams AND the back down the middle... what say you? and i fully intend to runa small slice of boning down the front right and left side so that the spiral lacing wont bunch up the front opinions please!!!

Having scoured everywhere I can think of locally and on t'internet I havent managed to find anything that looks like the trim on this 1650's Dutch belt. Has anyone on here seen anything like this on their travels? The other questions about it are: In your opinion is it even a trim or is it gilt on the actual belt itself? It seems to be quite shiney so what material would you think it was?

found a source for 18 oz. canvas, 60" wide for $9.00/ yard... seems like a pretty good deal to me.... what i was thinking of making with it is a new and larger dining fly...since most of them are usually using 10 0r 12 oz. canvas, i am thinking that a fly with this weight material would be heavy and troublesome.... any one with some experience chime in here ??

This is my interpretation of the baldric that blackbeard wore holding his 6 flintlocks. It's very similar to the one worn in the Blackbeard mini series shown on the BBC. My next project is the versions of the baldric as seen in the woodcut images from the period.

I am planning some leatherwork projects at the moment and wander about a view things: 1a. In drawings that I see (http://www.reenactor.ru/ARH/PDF/Eq_Mil_Petard_1.pdf), the edges of belts and baldrics appear to have some sort of lining or edging sown to it, does anyone have an idea what such a lining is made of? 1b. To me it would be also logical to have some kind of textile on the back- or inside of belts and baldrics, especially for the higher ranked soldiers and the rich civilians, to keep the rough backside and the edges of the leather from wasting the fabric of their clothing... I do have a modern drawing of a Spanish 1700 soldier that even does have some ruffled fa…

So my crew decided that with my recent back surgery they would make a handicapable pirate parking sign to hang in the encampment or on my tent. So far it's a yellow caution sign with a black shape that looks like Long John Silver. I like it but wanted some other ideas to throw at them for the sign. Any ideas?
