I just purchase an NCO naval hanger. I don't know it it's coated brass or just polished. The last thing I want to do is look like a "new" pirate. How do I get the finish off....or if it's already off...how do I get it to look used...IE....dull brass finish?

This is one of a few ship in bottle projects I'm working on but since it was pirate related i thought why not post it here. I did a little research into the Satisfaction and read that she was an English Frigate. The height of Henry Morgans campaign was in the late 1660's to Early 1670's. So I did some research in the books that I have and found an English Frigate called the Resolution that was built in 1667. I figured it would be as close as any one could get to how the ship might have looked so I'm modeling the Satisfaction after those plans. This was the original bottle i thought of using but have since changed. I show this picture though because it shows gene…

Made some 10k gold teeth for Halloween from some old rings I had laying around. Of course not all these teeth are used at once, I just made extras to give me more options in my look. Looks too grill when I have them all in.

Today I bought some bits of 100% white and black silk for making cravats. I had a choise between very fine and soft and a litle more coarse with some irregularities and aparently stiffer fabric... I wend for the coarser one thinking it would be more period, but already while walking out of the store I realised that this fabric would not fall and fold as fluid as the cravats seen on the old paintings and drawings. Only the other silk in the store looked so finely and perfectly woven that I doubted that this could be made in the old (1700) days, or could it??? Any thoughts anyone??

I stumbled onto this site tonight, and since scrimshaw is a history with travelers I thought I would share. He does amazing and beautiful work. http://www.pyrate.com/ Ironic how his site is close to this URL, eh? While I don't agree with whale hunting or harpooning, commerically, there are some aborignial people that depend on it as a right of manhood. You'll notice that he speaks about harpooning, etc, on his site, that's why I mentioned this. Beautiful pendants, and so. :) I respect this type of artistic ability. Isabella

Well after the waistcoat that I just finished I found myself with extra wool left over. So I decided last night to whip up and a pair of breeches. At the request of Mr. Cross I'll post some pictures of said breeches. Still a work in progress I need to cut and finish the bottoms and sew all the buttonholes on. So enjoy!

OK... I got to take inventory of the contents of my Ditty bag, but I was making a Pepsi can stove, and needed my awl... of course the awl is in the Ditty Bag, that's where I keep tools like that.... A Ditty Bag is where you keep small tools for sewing and rope work... (well and the awl that I needed for the Pepsi Can stove.) I'll take and post a picture of my Ditty bag in a day or so... (I think I've posted it before)... and more importantly what is in it.... And the contents DON'T have to be Period, just what you use and want to keep in your Ditty Bag. But post 'em if you got them....

arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh..... well things are going fabulously well...... Cap'n Sterling- you know that middle line the goes down the mantua skirt { FOR THAT 1660's BODICED GOWN??? } great for basing measurements off of... AND AND AND AND...... I BET BET BET bet that is a cutting line..... 1.)BECAUSE IT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH EASIER TO WORK WITH SKIRTS THAT ARE ONLY HALF THAT VOLUME TO PLEAT, then stitch them together........... 2)after it is allll finished no one can tell it ws sewn in peices and put together... 3) easier to cut that triangle train pieceso that it matches both sides of the skirt perfectly doe sanyone want to…

Is it really necessary to have all my garb hand sewn? Do patrons pay that close attention to sewing? It seems to me that most events are geared towards sales of plastic pirate toys and accoutrements anyway. Plus at events like Nor Cal it seems that the rules are out the window. Where are these events that are so heavily monitored? just currious

hey folks, ok- its time to reorganize the trailer. its a 6x12 box that we keep all our stuff in, and load up with others stuff and more stuff, then some more... so anyhow this weekend, we had to load in the back of a truck which if you have seen us travel know how fun that was. Anyhow it got me thinking. how does everyone move their gear and how do they have their vehicles set up to move it?

Here is a question. Are suspenders period? And if so how would they have been put together? Wiki, http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Suspenders says that they have been around for 300 years. The reason I ask as you can probably guess my draws constantly falling down…. Its not pretty. Any Ideas?

and I'd like to give it a nice "cavalier flare". Any recommendations on how to make this look a little more authentic and piratey? Is there a way to make it seem a little more warn? Also, don't mind the tiki(s) in the photo...they're the only thing I could find to prop the hat...Oh yes and I got the blank for Townsend. Really stiff felt!

Here are some period hats... some are on pirates, some sailors, and some are on Gentlemen... My pirate interest really only concerns the Golden Age of Piracy (and maybe a decade or so either side), and I have only been studying and researching the topic for about the last 8 years or so (which pales in comparison to some on this board). But most of what I have read or seen period pictures of in regards to hats for the period of 1680-1730 refers mainly to tricorns, round hats,, red caps, and some sort of knit hat like a Thrum or Monmouth. The below picture represents a few hours time and rudimentary knowledge of Photoshop (and a great idea from the Salacious Historian…

I pulled this post out of What pyrates really wore as it was literally getting burried in Clevage! Here goes I hope Patrick Hand doesn't see this Christine.... he won't be able to sleep at night! But as to your question about bodices... From an interesting site with history of corsets we get this So bodice means "pair of bodies" which, by our period (1690-1725) would be known as "Stays". Here is an example of a proper bodice/stays of the period There are more examples and general information at http://www.marariley.net So the bodice/stays of the Golden Age period should be a support garmet (with whalebone) that is kind of a part of the outer clothing. There …

I have a few original Late 17th and Early 18th pewter/brass buttons. They are really tiny compared to what we "think" button size should be. It seems to me that later buttons (rev and F&I period) buttons are larger, but since that is what most suttlers are carrying, that is what pirate re-enactors are wearing. I know that there are "ranges" of buttons size, but what would the most common size for sailors? Any takers? Most of mine range from about 1/2 inch to about 5/8ths inch. GoF

lookey lookey what i ran over leaving work. yup, got onto the interstate and saw this sitting upside down on the side of the road. So I turned myself around at the next "authorized use only" median and went back to fetch it. Well it came up so quickly that I ran it over on the recovery lap. Still in good shaped- its a townsend. Now, to leave it or modify?
