I'm getting ready for the Texas Ren-faire here in a couple of weeks and this year I've decided to bring some period-ish camping gear including a canvas tent (probably a big diamond though this is still a work in progress), bed, and chest. The bed turned out well so I thought I'd post a quick how-to with pictures going up this evening. Note that I have no actual mattress listed but have found the bed to be very comfortable as is with a piece of folded canvas on top of the cording. Materials: Two Rough Cedar 8' 2x4's - $5.00 each One Rough Cedar 8' 4x4 - $15.00 Approx 150' 1x4" manilla (preferred) or sisal what I used and works fine - $10 One 48" 7/8" hardwood dowel …

Would canvas be historically accurate for a frock coat or sailor's short jacket?

As I am going to Lockhouse in July and am rapidly putting my kit together, I realize I need a tent to sleep in. I have LOTS of wools to use as blankets and any crap covers inside the tent, so that isn't an issue. My problem: not much budget right now. SO, whereas, in theory, pirates would not have "general issue" camping gear, wouldn't have the means or necessity to have complex camping gear, that should not be overcome-able. So, what should I buy? How much of it? How would I put it together? What do I need to do with it before the event (prepping it)? Oh, and this just for me to sleep in.

Avast! As mentioned on another thread, I am in the midst of making a grey wool coat among other things. If you click on my link, you will see my name ought to be Ajax rather than Morgan! How would I add some grime to my garments? I know not to wash...but I would like to speed things up a bit. I know the coffee & tea bath trick...what I am looking for is grey, ring-around-the collar grime. Suggestions?

With all this cold weather gear I'm making here is yet another item that I just completed. A Hand Muff. I obtained some rabbit pelts from my parents and just put this together this afternoon. It's not for me but I modeled it for you. Now I need to shower the fur off me.

Inspired by a thread on this forum several years ago and a few close encounters with Maddogge at this year's Pike River, I thought I should try to capture the smell of a pirate, as close as possible. I did this for a few reasons: 1) I hate the smell of bug spray. Bug spray and campfire smoke together smell so chemically and nasty that it just takes me right out of period. Maybe I can make myself stink so much that the bugs will leave me alone! 2) I tend to stink after a few days in the sun and no shower anyway, so I might as well stink as historically accurate as possible. After Pike River, I balled up all my clothes and threw them into a tupperware container without w…

i just cut out 3 sets of stays-- cherry linen, navy linen, and pink linen........... my last set , i used interfacing and they turned out just delightful {pics in my profile album}.... they were 3 layers thick-- one white linen, one tapestry{ with i ironed on the interfacing to} and the back ecru linen.... and i am wondering that if i am portraying a commoner, shouldnt the stays be laced up the front since i haveno servant to lace me in them { no, silas doesn't mind-- but i suspect that commoners laced them up front, all though all the pictures never show front lacing stays--- unless it is a jacket} and another side note----to be honest, one set of stays destroys a pair…

Started making 'em and selling 'em off myself, and while I have no delusions of grandeur I'm happy that I recouped my investment on each one! Obviously they are all from the late 18th century, the first one is rabbit felt and the others are canvas covered wool felt, all the cockades were made by yours truly, and everything was hand-stiched (The Blisters! Arrgghh!). The last one I'm almost done with, the person who is buying it wants it to look like Aubrey's hat from <i>Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World. </i>I think I've got most of the details right, just have to figure out a way to make it shiny now, anyone have any ideas?<br><br>…

Where does one go t' find fine lace? Preferably 'leaf' or other pattern (Not flowers!) and preferably linen or silk (even cotton will do). I know where t' find Cravats but no one seems to know where t' find lace more then 6 inches long, I need at Lease 10 inch or better yet 15 inch! (and NO, pirates did NOT make their own lace - They Plundered It!!!)

I am currently working on a kit for a ren era pirate. Here on the Gold Coast we have a faire in late summer called Queen Bess and the Pyrates which is a faire dedicated to the Elizibethan era and her support of English privateers. The first year I went I noticed that there were hardly any pirates at all and most of the ones that were there were just a bunch of fantasy pirates anyway so...... I decided to create a PC kit for my next attendance and for every other ren faire I attend. A pirate is a pirate... no matter what year it is says I. Not sure how it will be much different from many ren kits but I will do my best to make it as sea worthy as possible. What say ye fel…

were should the backing fall on a 1750s style waist coat? I know earlier styles were longer and that later styles the back was the same lenghth as the front but for example on the movie Pirates of the Caribbean and the recent Black beard Documentery I've noticed the back being shorter than the front is this correct?

I have been looking into reproducing authentic navigation sea charts. I have downloaded hundreds of maps off the web but I cannot find any that are complete maps, or they are too small to read the print, or there is some other issue with them. With all the pirate related books I have you would think I could find something of use there, but I cannot. The only place I haven't checked is the local Historical Society Library because they are only opened a few days a week, when I am at work. I have two questions; 1. Has anyone here ever reproduced a sea chart before? 2. Does anyone have any suggestions to where can I find good quality, large format sea charts (circa 1700) t…

Slops 1 2

INTRODUCTION This is how I made a pair of semi-period slops. OK, they are made from hemp canvas, sewn with linen thread, and all visible seams are hand finished. So why only "Semi-period ?"...... I can't "back-up" these slops with any good documentation. So they are a reasonable "guess". I'm not sure if the pockets with flaps are period, The Tailor's pattern for knee breaches that I'm basing them on shows where pockets would go, but they are farther forward than where I put them on these slops. I'm assuming that a Sailor/Pyrate wouldn't go to the nearest Jo Ann's and buy a pattern. He would know the basic cut and fit of slops, but there would be a wide range of varia…

Well mates, a lucky thing occured. I was gifted 4 yards of linen....only problem is...its jet black.........and i dont want anything i make from it to seem rich...or as if i was mourning.......im aware that black wasnt the most uncommon color, but I feel its too black for a black man to afford.......wow that sounded.........*cough......... SOOOOO whats a good way to fade it quickly? though i could indeed use the sun, but id like to get it to an even coal grey.......OOOORRRR am i just freaking out, and it isnt all that much a problem .......i was thinking of making a sleeved waistcoat out of it, and mabey breeches if theres left overs...but not to wear at the same time....…

What say ye, caricatures or not - Are striped cloth stocking caps at all accurate or just an artistic character? Is the ragged bottom slops at all accurate or again just an artistic character of a ragged pirate or castaway? Jas. Hook
