There is an older thread but its outdated. Since there is a demand for information, sources and prices have changed a lot since the Covid era. I'm not going to maintain links (but will provide website name in parenthesis when possible). Will try to note the sources that might be more modern or not quite period (target is late 1600s thru early 1700s). Not promoting or recommending these sources. They are "for information only"... I would like to stress making your own kit is the most historic and economical option (if you are able) If you run across other sources please post them below and I'll add/edit appropriately to original post.. hat blanks: E…

Before I get any Hollywood Pyrates in a "huff"... I want to explain this thread. This thread is about what are the minimum acceptable garb standards to participate at an Authentic event. It has nothing to do with what someone wears to a Renaissance Faire, nor is it telling anyone how he or she has to play Pyrate. It is a discussion about Authentic events only. ********************************************************** Last year at PiP we talked about this... (NOTE: this only applies to what is now the 1729 Careening Camp) We want to have a period camp, but don't want to scare people away. It takes time to put together authentic garb. So far, we haven't set a mini…

Ahoy the ship (of craftiness!) I am starting the process of putting together a fully functional kit to be ready for an event this fall, and I am starting almost entirely from scratch. What I have from back in my “heyday” is either too ‘disney’, too small, or long gone. I thought it might be of interest to some to chronicle this as I go – both to share ideas, and also to get advice and input. This is going to be a combination of sewing projects, upcycling, and thrifting. I will probably be exploring fabric options and sourcing, trying to find a balance between authenticity and convenience/expedience, and doing this all in a relatively short amount of time. …

I've been working on kit the last month or so, but been pretty lazy about taking pictures of progress: - Made a bedroll I can throw down at the barracks or ?. Its mostly done save for some leather straps to secure the roll and maybe also to sling over the shoulder. Its basically an attempt to disguise my inflatable mattress inside a linen mattress cover. Add a wool blanket, leather strap and wallah! Between this and my hammock I should finally be covered. - Started a pair of period linen breeches. They are getting close, but still adjusting the pattern to make the fit comfortable. - Collecting/Building a traveling cook implement kit. Flying in and cooking p…

Yet another option for the creative Pirate, which can be modified in so many ways (flame LEDs, in particular) - a Mary Rose lantern. http://www.oocities.org/firespiter/lantern/lantern.htm

Since I'm in the process of making a pair of slops, I started taking pics. figured might be a good tutorial. First - I'm going to mention washing and drying your fabric on high heat. This will eliminate 95% of any shrinkage in the fabric. You certainly dont want them to shrink after being stitched together and taking your careful measurements into consideration Here are the main sections of fabric cut for the slops. two fronts and two backs. Left front and left back will be stitched together at the side seam. As will the right front and right back.

I broke down and finished a couple new linen shirts, figuring I would need them for a 4 day event in the fall. When throwing my kit together I want to use my Buccaneer jacket more often, but my waistcoats are all long and hang below the coat. So I threw together a simple linen short waistcoat. I didnt even do pockets, I literally started put it together last Sunday and finished the button holes/attached buttons today. I also tried something new with the shirts. Reenforcement stitch on the neck slit. First one is not perfect, but it will do the job...

For all the creative folk, as well as any person ever tasked with a “Can you fix this” problem, I would like to introduce Aves Studio. I was first introduced to them while at an Art Gallery showing outside Joshua Tree, CA, leading me to initially purchase their Aves Power Pack sampler. I have since used their FIXIT Sculpt for concrete garden statue repair (see photos below), and Apoxy Paste, for concrete pot repair, with fantastic results. I think this group of products offers a great option for not only repair, but new sculptural creation as well, in an extremely durable, easy to work with product, and I am happy to share them with you. FIXIT is: 2 par…

I was thinking about replacing my old wedge tent. After checking various tent suppliers, there must be a large demand or they are all taking their sweet time in the off-season. Lead times for canvas was 2 to 6 months. Then I heard that the canvas in these tents is much heavier, so I pulled out the old tents I've used extensively over the years. Both were made from Home Depot canvas. The wedge tent was made in 2005-06. The Oar tent maybe 2012. I think 6-8 ounce canvas versus 10-12 ounce heavily coated commercial tents. After inspection, they are still in good shape. I'm glad, cause I spent a lot of time making reinforced handsewn grommets on both for stake tiedowns. T…

I know Cass's thread is closed and locked, but hope this might be helpful for more people in the future, too. Burnley and Trowbridge, as wel as Bernadette Peters, and a host of other historical minded people have posted Sew-A-Long videos and hand stitching tutorials on YouTube these past couple of years. These are good videos to help anyone learning or updating their knowledge in period attire. Plus, we know basic techniques always helps with creating a wide variety of outfit pieces. If you find a sew-a-long or tutorial anywhere, whether Blog, Vlog, or YouTube video or channel, or anything, feel free to post it here. Here's the link to Burnley and…

As a pirate one should have a pirate flag. That sounds easier than it is to achieve, at least that's my experience. There are lots of templates out there, but I found it very difficult to find a pattern that suits my taste and needs. I don't want a too complicated design, because such don't feel very period, if you consider that a sail maker had to make such a flag back in the 1700's. And I don't want to just copy one of the better known designs like that of Calico Jack, although I like the crossed sabers more than the crossed bones (because in my oppinion the ratio between the head and the sabers looks better than between head and bones - just a feel of design). And t…

OK, I haven't posted much in awhile, but I'm going to start to teach Arron Jr. how to sew, and the first project will be a ditty-bag so he can keep his sewing stuff...well where he can find it. I will post progress pictures and drawings showing what we are doing as we go along, but be aware they won't be too often, Arron Jr. is only 7 years old (but he is a really smart 7 year old), and he will be working on the project when he is over here, which is about every other week. But for anyone that doesn't think they can learn how to sew, this should be an interesting series of post.... .

Anchor Knot Made in 1973 from "The Book of Ornamental Knots" by Hensel and Graumont. Please excuse the age and other stains (it was glued to a board). When it fell off the board many years ago it was shoved in a plastic bag which caused the twisting. I still like it. Tony

The more familiar double overhand knot shown in the upper photo makes a fine stopper knot. The mystery double hand knot (It might have a proper name) is shown in the lower photo. Can you knot tyers duplicate it?

I thought some of you might be interested in my traveling camping kit for events. With the exception of the period hammock (I used a lightweight nylon hammock), I built this kit in 2009 for my first attendance at FTPI (known as Pirates in Paradise or PIP then). Over the years this kit has served me very well. This is strictly for events that I fly to. When I drive the stops come off. This kit was weighed for each piece in order to verify it meets the airline 50 # limit. and it comes in a couple pounds under. Kit includes: wedge tent stakes ropes a ground cloth a wool army blanket a cloth bag for pillow (place extra clothes or coat in the…
