Being new to this side of the 18th century (I've done later but not GAoP) I am still working on that most vital part of piracy - the hat. I have a low crown broad brim from Dirty Billy that I have used for my 1785 work -but now I am turning that large brim (5 inches) into something cocked. I have put in a single thread to hold up two front spots - but am not sure what will be the best (most period) material to make it a permanent change. I have some black leather cord that would be strong enough but really want this to look right since I am changing this hat for good and hopefully for the better - Finally a question - what is the most correct way for a working sailor t…

So I got a call while I was recovering from my back surgery from a lady in NC who had a collection of sewing notions she wanted to give me to help me with my down time. I found three huge containers of buttons from 1910 - 1935. I'll start posting pics once i finish cleaning them all up

Here are some period hats... some are on pirates, some sailors, and some are on Gentlemen... My pirate interest really only concerns the Golden Age of Piracy (and maybe a decade or so either side), and I have only been studying and researching the topic for about the last 8 years or so (which pales in comparison to some on this board). But most of what I have read or seen period pictures of in regards to hats for the period of 1680-1730 refers mainly to tricorns, round hats,, red caps, and some sort of knit hat like a Thrum or Monmouth. The below picture represents a few hours time and rudimentary knowledge of Photoshop (and a great idea from the Salacious Historian…

Here is a question. Are suspenders period? And if so how would they have been put together? Wiki, http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Suspenders says that they have been around for 300 years. The reason I ask as you can probably guess my draws constantly falling down…. Its not pretty. Any Ideas?

I just got back from a antique/thirft store in Durham and found a wooden jewelry box with a leather top and a metal pirate ship in the middle with ornate wood carvings around the edge of the box. Eve cooler is when i opened it there was a small sliding compartment that had a 9 volt battery in it and I found two dials on the side of the box. It looks like it was an old radio an there was a small speaker in the bottom. Thing needs a lot of TLC and a new coat of stain but the owner was amazed at how taken I was with it so he gave it to me for free! I found out from one of the other workers that his oldest daughter had just passed away this week (breast cancer) so I went …

So my crew decided that with my recent back surgery they would make a handicapable pirate parking sign to hang in the encampment or on my tent. So far it's a yellow caution sign with a black shape that looks like Long John Silver. I like it but wanted some other ideas to throw at them for the sign. Any ideas?

Well after a couple of events I've decided to revisit my tent rig. Here is a pic of the old rig. Now the NEW one. I'm using a peg design that I've seen in many commercially made tents. Inside view. This had enabled me to shorten the length of all the poles. Which is great! Now I can fit things into a smaller vehicle.

since the rest of my encampment is lacking in a few things, mainly tables and chairs, i am looking into making or buying a few things... in the pic below, i am fancying the design of the red table and chair ( stool ?) in the foreground... i saw quite a few at paynetown and never dawned on me to bother asking about them... ( ok-- i'm slow ) i figure that they fold up for easy storage... anyone have this kind of table set up ?? and anybody have any plans ??

I don't know if there are any roses stores near anyone but they have some really nice old style zuit suits with some piratical flair to the fabric. It's the right length for a coat and the whole suit set is only $35 right now.

Hello All, I'm trying to gather enough information to build a tent out of a piece of sail. Now my nautical knowledge is limited, so I don't know where to begin. I don't need anything fancy and using a couple poles and some rope, I would like to build a little shelter. I don't want to buy a civil war tent because too many are in use and it just does not seem very piraty to me. What I'm asking for is what type of sail material should be used. I'm thinking about the size of a standard wall tent but the shape is going to be whatever works. I like the idea of a tent made out of some pieces scavenged from some shipwreck. Any advice? All is appreciated. I did a search …

So I have a really nice London Fog four button full length dress longcoat madeof black wool with a silken type lining. I have cut off the collar, removed the shoulder pads but still have to figure out what to do with the lapels. I have another wool coat the same color that's tooo small and damaged so I've cut it up to make bigger sleeves to stich on the original jacket but I still can't get the fit right. Has anyone ever tackled a project simular to this? Any advice?

Okay, I hope I can make this clear... I also figured this may or may not be the best place for this, so if the mods think it might suit a different part of the pub, please don't hesitate to move it. Without getting bogged down in details (so try to keep it to lists, with perhaps brief explanations on some items), what would you bring (whether you currently own/have it or not) to make a complete portrayal on a "Trekking" style event. For those of you not familiar with historical trekking, basically it is re-enacting that is not done in public, you gather up everything you need and travel to a location (be it by boat, or by foot, or horse or whatever suits your portrayal b…

This is my interpretation of the baldric that blackbeard wore holding his 6 flintlocks. It's very similar to the one worn in the Blackbeard mini series shown on the BBC. My next project is the versions of the baldric as seen in the woodcut images from the period.

The Fontange or Fontage is a very unique headdress of the 17th Century. From 1690–1710, originating in France then making its’ way to England by the early 1690s. A fontange was a lady's headdress named after Marie Angélique de Scorailles de Roussille, duchesse de Fontanges (1661–1681), mistress of Louis XIV of France and worn by women of the late 17th century and early 18th century. It is said that the Duchess tied her hair up with a ribbon after losing her cap while horseback riding. The king liked the look and it soon became fashionable. Though this fad started around 1680, when relatively low, ribbon-trimmed caps appeared (e.g. the "fontange à la sultane", worn with …

Well, being sick did have an upside, it gave me some time t' crawl around in pain and finally get me first leather project done! Me first shaped leather scabbard fer me stage sword - thanks for th' leather Sage Lion! Full sheath Close up o' th' throat Close up o' th' tip, business end Now I am not sure how Barbossa Leather does his exactly but I used it as me inspiration and researched some leather working ideas online. After cutting th' leather t' size (actually 'over sized' as th' final cut be after all is sewn up) I soaked th' leather in Very Hot tap water for roughly 15min. (NOT boiling, that is another technique but I did not want t' chance it first time …

Bon jure mes amis! Soon the icy winds of hiver will be upon us, as well as the cool days of automne. So, what are you guys making to keep warm? Personally id like a watch cloak, a sleeved wesket or to, and a greatcoat would be.......great..lol....... Im pretty sure that a wool jacket would do, for most sailors/pyrates, but what are the common folk wearing in hiver? oh...and this question doesnt apply to michael, canadians dont need winter clothes...... au revoir, pour maintenant

Ok so I'm at an impasse. I can't decide if I want to keep the pewter buttons or go with the dorset buttons I've made. Here are a few pics to help you out. Let me hear your reasons for voting the way that you have. Thanks!
