I love contests... and prizes. I was thinking about doing a "pirate of the year 2006" contest. This would be as an award/prize/recognition of the Pirate that has done an exceptional job of promoting, participating, and general good will in the realm of historical or fantasy piracy over the last year. Its not a popularity contest or anything, but I thought it might be cool to do. I have a rather extensive prize closet, and maybe we could do an "interview" an push to have it published in one of the Pirate Magazines that are afloat these days. Anyone else think its worthwhile? It would be hard to choose, as there are a lot of folks here that are really outstanding and d…

I went a few weekends ago ter the Northern Californee Ren Faire (in Hollister's Casa de Fruita, where we almost lost a lucky penny recently...thank Neptune we didn't...)...or as I likes ter call it - Casa de Faire....There be a good deal o' pyrates there. I been goin' ter these things fer some time (since I be a little clam in tights...since me uncle be one of the older merchants at the faire...a doubloon to anyone who guesses correctly who that might be)....and I thought ter meself.... "Hmmm...as much as ol' Redd likes ter be eatin', drinkin' an makin' merry...is there anything that I still want ter do here?" It be a tough question, an maybee I were in the wrong frame o…

A healthy dose 1 2

Maybe it just me, but it seems like everyone has times when they can use a a healthy dose of something positive. Something inspirational or sensical or even just a break from the daily rhetoric the media feeds us about terrorism, violence and threat levels - the political punditry and the fact that the number of hate groups around the country has increased by more than 50 percent since 2000, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center and all that other stuff about life that can just feel oppressive after awhile. So, here's thread where maybe when you need a healthy dose of something better, you can poke in and maybe find it. (9 hells! I've gone granola!!) The Wolf Yo…

Am I the only one here... Who has never been aboard a pirate ship? Who has never met a pirate? All my life I have been interested in Pirates. I must admit that most of my fascination comes from reading romance novels LOL! The domineering captain and his captive innocent. In all honesty, you learn alot about pirates, their ships, and the era of time from these novels. In HS and college I wrote papers on famous pirates. I would be interested in learning about how you came to be, and about how I can come to be! Thanks and salute

Please forgive me for probably bringing up an ancient subject, but I've been absent for a while...raidin' other foru...erm...ports...and so I've missed quite a bit. But, having just been to the PA Ren Faire, and planning to go a couple more times this year, I got to wondering about what would be in a real female pirate's wardrobe. I am not comfy in traditional 'pirate wench' attire, tho Mr. Das would certainly love me to dress that way. :) But in mid-August there is no way in hell that anyone is gonna squeeze me into a vice-like bodice. And the skirts (esp. with underslips and all) are just too hot for me. I know it's said that female pirates would dress like men.…

Swordplay... 1 2

It came to me yesterday, (while on an adrenaline high) that while we mostly carry cutlasses and various other bits of sharp steel about our persons, there's only a few on this forum that have said they actually fight with said weapons. So I'm curious: what kind of swordspersons have we out there? What styles, what training, and which preferred weapons? Being as it's my question, I'll answer first. My serious sword work started 25 years ago in the SCA. Things have changed a lot, but I still play with them. It's the only place I know I can go and fight for 6 or 7 hours with a large pool of opponents. I prefer hisoric styles, and train and fight mostly out of Silver's…

Sorry about the crimson stains, but I didn't have time to change out of my work clothes. Looking at you all here seems like I might just fit in fine. I've been reading along and finally had the chance to log in. I understand I buy the first round. Oh, but I did wash my hands. And by the way, if there are any ships in port in need of a good limb detachment specialist, I can vouch for my own work.

Pirate Haiku I sail the cruel sea Just to plunder and pillage What does that make me? It makes me – Pyrate! The envy of all a-shore The dream of wenches. My cutlass is sharp And my musket is powdered Frightful image, I. The good ship is trim Sails puff out in the fresh breeze Salt spray in my face. Take what I want now Leave no tale-tellers behind The creed of the sea.

I would have completely missed this if it wasn't for the Journalist who contacted me about doing a response article to this. Not sure if this was posted already.. if so, I'll post it again. Generally it's about Pirate Enthusists of what they think about the recent Somali Pirate activity. **** Link removed by request**** But, um... it's one of those that not only slaps you upside the head, but knocks on yo'r skull to get ye wonderin' and thinking... plus stirs yo'r blood either in a good way or a bad way. ~Lady B

So, today marks the first year anniversary of two pub members.... One year ago today some minister shackled myself and Kate Souris together for all eternity... So I raise a glass to me wife, and here's to having at least 50 more of these years.. Because it will be a miracle if I live that long.

We've all been through this silliness, so give it up! What absolutely assinine situation have you dealt with whan encountering the public? I've had more than one woman ask me if I was too hot in me garb, since the dew point up here in Minnesota can be ridiculous. Here be me answers... - "Too hot? I was hoping for 'incredibly sexy', but I'll take 'hot' on a a bad day!" - "It gets even hotter when I'm out of this garb. Care to go back to the car park for a bit of a cuddle?" - I look off into the sky, opposite the Sun, and declare "Aye, but it's better than the possible alternative, eh? Wait a moment... where's my banana?! Help! Guards!! Banana thief!!!"

I forgot the whole introduction thing..... I am Wes Olson, 40 years. Spent the last 25 years or so doing anything from WWII, Ancient Rome, Colonial, Rev War, and French and Indian. Always liked pirates, grew up with Disney on TV Sunday nights so we got to see Treasure Island a bit. Always been a history geek too. Married (she thinks I'm nuts) 2 daughters, love hunting, shooting, 4 wheeler, history, making weird things that people quit using hundreds of years ago. Been with the City of St. Peters, MO for the last 8 1/2 years, slowly closing in on 10 years in uniform (Police, with Ranger Division) and still love it. Got burned out on all the snobby folks in some of the …

As we left off (over in the Tiburon Cafe)...an old mate of mine in the dance party/rave field of work...sent me a qoute for really nice, full color cards here's what he said in a recent email: Ah, this place rocks. It's called PS Print and its in Oakland. You do everything over their website and it's really, really cheap. When it comes to flyers a 3"x4" double sided full color at 5,000 copies comes out to $128.00. You can only order in 5,000 amounts. But at $128 thats not bad. Check out www.PSPrint.com

I just wanted to say that I have really enjoyed my time on this site. NEVER before have I met a better group of people, on the whole, than those that are here. I have been able to be silly and serious without anyone jumping down on me. Now of romance and reality of pirates, I have seen some of you in Port Washington and though I did not get to meet you I got to see how you acted. The romance is what will bring most of the new commers to this game. Then once in they can choose which to follow the romance or the reality. There are those of you out there that are VERY good at the accuracy and I am glad to know you. I myself plan to TRY to be accurate but I know that if I am …

Avast! (I thought I'd use that old cliché, as it was originally a Dutch word) I'm new to this board, so here's the introduction, before you all become impatient and nail my gizzard to the mast: I'm a 34-year old Dutch writer with a few non-fiction books published, one of which explored the legend of the Flying Dutchman (and I wrote it at least two years before 'Dead Man's Chest', so it's not mentioned). My first novel has been picked up by a big publisher (Arrr, it may be break-through time!) and will be published, if things go according to plan (best laid plans and all that, every pirate knows never to take the next dawn for granted, eh?) sometime around october. It's…
